Add exceptions windows defender

How do I add an exception to Windows Defender Firewall?

Firewalls are a tool that your computer uses to protect you from malicious software.

They can interfere with the way your computer communicates with Rocket League. You can create an exception in the firewall. This will allow your computer to better communicate with the Rocket League.

Turn your firewall off and test a game to see if the issue still occurs:

  1. Follow the steps below to test your firewall:
  2. Press the Windows Key on your keyboard
  3. Type Windows Defender Firewall
  4. Press the Enter Key on your keyboard
  5. Select Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off
  6. Select the Turn off Windows Defender Firewall box under Private Network Settings
  7. Select the Turn off Windows Defender Firewall box under Public Settings Network
  8. Launch Rocket League
  9. Play a game to see if the issue has been resolved

Turn the firewall back on:

  1. Close Rocket League
  2. Press the Windows Key on your keyboard
  3. Type Windows Defender Firewall
  4. Select Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off
  5. Select the Turn on Windows Defender Firewall box under Private Network Settings
  6. Select the Turn on Windows Defender Firewall box under Public Settings Network
  7. Close the window

If the issue is resolved by disabling the firewall, you need to create an exception in Rocket League. Adding an exception to your firewall will allow Rocket League to connect to your computer.

Follow the steps below to create an exception:

  1. Press the Windows Key on your keyboard
  2. Type Windows Defender Firewall
  3. Press the Enter Key on your keyboard
  4. Select Allow apps to communicate through Windows Defender Firewall
  5. Scroll down until you find Rocket League
  6. Check all boxes named Rocket League
  7. Click the OK button

If you do not see Rocket League in the Allow apps to communicate through Windows Defender Firewall list, you will need to add it.

    1. Click the Allow another app… button in the Allow apps to communicate through Windows Defender Firewall window
    2. Click on the Browse button
    3. Locate Rocket League
        • Epic Games Path: C:\Program Files\Epic Games\rocketleague
        • Steam Path: C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\rocketleague\Binaries\Win64
    4. Check all boxes named Rocket League
    5. Click the OK button

Windows

Add exception to Windows Defender at install time

When running on Windows 8, our application is exceptionally slow unless we add a process exception for it in Windows Defender. (It is mostly from logging operations onto the disk.)

Is there a way to add the exception programmatically during our InstallShield installation? Calling a custom action in C# or VBScript is fine.

1 Answer 1

If it would be so easy to add an exception to Windows Defender by using a VBScript script, Windows Defender would be no protection for your computer because any malware would simply add an exception for itself.

There are some registry keys which define if Windows Defender’s real time protection is enabled or not. You can read these values to know if it is active and alert your user that the slowness is caused by Windows Defender. But you cannot modify these keys, not even running in a service with SYSTEM user. These registry keys are protected by Windows to forbid tampering.

Note that since Windows 10 the option to add exceptions to Windows Defender does not exist any more.

The only way to turn on or off Windows Defender:

  • Manually via Windows Defender configuration panel (MsAscUi.exe)
  • Install another antivirus program which disables Windows Defender automatically.

How to add an exception to Windows Defender

I’m trying to run a program and the tester said:

» . Windows includes Windows Firewall. If Windows Firewall is enabled (which is the default), an exception must be added to un-block EchoLink and allow it to access the Internet.»

How can I add an ‘exception’?

How To Add Exclusions for Windows Defender in Windows 10

In Windows 10 Creators Update, there is a new app called Windows Defender Security Center. The app, formerly known as «Windows Defender Dashboard», has been created to help the user control his security and privacy settings in a clear and useful way. It combines all essential security features under a single dashboard. It can be used to add an exception to Windows Defender Virus Protection. Here is how.

Before you proceed, here is what you need to know. Don’t confused Windows Defender with Windows Defender Security Center. Windows Defender is the built-in anti-virus software which provides real-time protection against threats. The Windows Defender Security Center app is just a dashboard which allows you to track your protection state. It can be used to configure various security options like SmartScreen. It shows an icon in the system tray.

You can launch Windows Defender Security Center from the Start menu. Navigate to the letter «W» using the alphabet navigation feature of the new Start menu and click the «W» letter in the grid as shown below.

There, you’ll find the shortcut to the new Security Center app.

The app unifies many useful security options you might want to track and control. The user interface of the Windows Defender Security Center app comes with a toolbar on the left and the main area which occupies the rest of the window area.

Once you open the app, it shows a special start page. The start page comes with the following sections:

  • Virus & threat protection
  • Device performance & health
  • Firewall & network protection
  • Family options

Each section has its own icon. A special check mark indicates that a section has no issues.

Virus & threat protection is what we are looking for. Before proceeding, ensure that your user account has administrative privileges. Now, follow the instructions below.

To add an exception to Windows Defender in Windows 10, do the following.

  1. Open Windows Defender Security Center as described above.
  2. Click on the Virus & threat protection icon.
  3. Click on the link Virus & threat protection settings. This will open the following page:
  4. Scroll down to Exclusions and click on the link Add or remove exclusions.
  5. The following page will open:Here, click on the button Add an exclusion.
In the drop down menu select one of the following options:

  • Specify the desired object to exclude, e.g. a folder and you are done.
  • Here is something you need to know.

File — this option removes a specific file from being scanned by Windows Defender.
Folder — this option removes a specific folder from being scanned by Windows Defender. All its contents will be excluded recursively.
File type — here you can add a file extension (e.g. *.txt) as an exclusion.
Process — this option can be used to add a process as an exclusion, so any file used by this process won’t be scanned by Windows Defender.
