When you want to give wireless internet access to other people in your classroom or house, the Apple AirPort Utility for Mac makes it easier than ever. After that, all the stations that are available will be listed in the main interface.
If you are familiar with routers, these AirPort Base Stations work kind of like them. You just connect the cables and then let the network be configured automatically by the application. As for Time Capsule, this refers to the combination of a gateway router and a wireless device. This makes its configuration very easy too.
Overall, the most dependable application for giving wireless internet access to other devices is Apple AirPort Utility for Mac. Every device in your home can establish a connection to your wireless internet network. An external cable doesn’t even need to be used.

Update the firmware on your AirPort base station
Use AirPort Utility to update your AirPort Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme, or AirPort Express Base Station.
Apple periodically offers software updates (called firmware updates) that improve AirPort performance, security, and functionality. Here’s how to make sure that your base station is up to date.
Before you begin
- Make sure that your base station and Mac or iOS device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch) are connected to the Internet.
- If your base station is performing a Time Machine backup or sharing a hard drive on your network, make sure that none of your devices are currently using that drive. Updating an AirPort base station causes it and its network services to be temporarily unavailable.
Restart your base station
Open AirPort Utility on your Mac or iOS device, then follow these steps to restart your base station. If you have more than one base station, restart your primary base station last.
AirPort Utility shows a graphical overview of your Wi-Fi network and any base stations connected to it. The primary base station (Home, in this example) is connected to the Internet via your modem or router.
- Select your base station in AirPort Utility, then enter the base station password, if prompted.
- On Mac, choose Base Station > Restart from the menu bar.
- On iOS devices, tap the base station in AirPort Utility, then tap Edit > Advanced > Restart Base Station.
If you can’t restart using AirPort Utility, just unplug the base station for a few seconds, then plug it back in.
Check for a firmware update
- After restarting your base station, select the base station in AirPort Utility to see details about it. If you have more than one base station, start with the one farthest from your primary base station.
- On Mac, the details pop-up shows an Update button when an update is available. Click the Update button to install the update.
- On iOS devices, the details screen shows a numbered badge next to Version when an update is available. Tap Version, then tap Download and Install.
- Your base station automatically restarts after the update is installed. Repeat these steps for any other base stations you’re using. Update your primary base station last.

AirPort Express совместим с динамиками с автономным питанием, подключенными к аудиоразъему «mini-jack». Вы не сможете использовать динамики с питанием по USB с AirPort Express.

Обновление Утилиты AirPort и прошивок для точек доступа Apple
Утилита AirPort — встроенное в Mac OS X приложение для управления беспроводной периферией Apple — подверглась кардинальному обновлению. В AirPort Utility 6.0 изменилось практически всё, начиная с внешнего вида самой утилиты. Запустив её, вы вряд ли найдёте отличий Mac-версии AirPort-утилиты от вышедшей прошлой осенью iOS-разновидности. Иными словами, в Apple решили портировать iOS-версию на Мак в неизменном виде. Проблема лишь в том, что iOS-версия умела гораздо меньше в сравнении со старой Mac-версией.
Назовём лишь некоторые функции, которых в утилите AirPort больше нет:
- общее окно со сводкой состояния устройства
- настройка подключённых принтеров
- профили настроек
- управление параметрами IPv6
- просмотр логов и статистики использования
- настройка силы сигнала Wi-Fi
- пошаговый мастер настройки
- фильтрация доступа по MAC-адресу
По этому поводу на форумах Apple уже накопилось множество гневных отзывов. В качестве решения для тех, кто уже рискнул обновиться до версии 6.0, предлагается скачать другой релиз — AirPort Utility 5.6, тоже выпущенную прошлой ночью. Она адресована владельцам старых поколений AirPort Express и Extreme (при этом и 5.6, и 6.0 работают только в Lion) и, к счастью, не порезана в функциях и не наделена новым дизайном. Версии 6.0 и 5.6 могут быть установлены на Маке параллельно.
Третий апдейт, касающийся беспроводной периферии Apple — прошивка 7.6.1 для AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme и Time Capsule. Она доступна для всех современных поколений названных устройств, совместимых со стандартом 802.11n. В качестве основных изменений называется поддержка возможности удалённого доступа к подключённому диску через iCloud и повышенная стабильность работы. Обновить прошивку можно с помощью утилиты AirPort, как на Mac OS X и Windows, так и с iOS.
