AJA System Test is designed to measure the input and output performance of your volumes, and it works by writing a certain amount of data while measuring how long it takes to read and transfer the info to your storage device, to your RAM or to a KONA Video capture card.

Capable of testing both local drives, as well as all drives accessible over the local area network

Furthermore, the AJA System Test utility offers you the possibility to tune your tests by changing the amount of data that will be processed during a test (goes from 128MB to 16 GB) and the video frame size (the amount of data that will be processed in each transaction).

Also worth noting is the fact that AJA System Test automatically detects all connected volumes and you can select the one you want to perform your tests on from the Volume drop down menu.

Moreover, if you want to test network volumes, you must check the appropriate box in the Preferences window.

AJA System Test provides six types of performance tests: Disk Read/Write, Disk Read Existing File, Sweep Video Frame Sizes, Sweep Binary Frame Sizes, Sweep File Sizes and KONA DMA (requires a Kona card and to have the driver software installed).

AJA System Test Lite is a great way to test a storage system with a real world speed test. Designed with digital video production and post production needs in mind, it emulates the writing and reading of video files to and from a hard disk and displays the results in a simple, easy to read format, by either data rate or frame rate, including graphs to show performance over time.

Users can specify resolutions, color spaces, bit depths, compression types and file container types, to emulate their specific digital video production/post workflow, and do preliminary evaluation to see if their storage system will support it, before practical workflow testing begins.

Great App but..

The app appears to work well but I can’t find a way to select the target disk. When you open the app you can select the target disk. However once your in the app I can’t find a way to change the target disk with out closing the app.

No manual or info

This app (Lite version) shows read and write speeds to the volume you specify. It says it is designed for supporting video product work. I was told to use it as part of trying to identify some disk failure issues with an SSD connected to MacOS Sierra. It is a pretty mystifying piece of software actually, with no information about how to use it or what its results mean. The Lite version doesn’t dump its results anywhere so you use screen capture I guess for recording results. You can use it to get some sense of the relative performance of different drives on different ports and interfaces (e.g. USB vs FW).. If it encounters a problem, you are SOL. On a write error, it just stops in its tracks, leaves its datafile on the drive, and has some difficulty using that drive again. I’m not sure what finally cleared that condition. It was interesting to see how bad the performance of a FW 800 drive was through a Thunderbolt adapter when compared to the same drive using USB3.

For professional use

I’m amused by the reviewer who gave this app a low rating because it doesn’t include a manual. Ma’am, it’s a benchmark testing app intended for use by professionals who already know what all of the options mean without needing any explanation. While it can be helpful for others to use [ie, non professionals], you can’t blame the publisher for being uninformed yoruself. If you looked at their website you’d find all sorts of products that you don’t understand. but that wouldn’t be their fault, now would it?

For the rest, who know what they are looking at, this app is great and needs no explanation. It works. Period.

Overview

AJA System Test is included in retail software downloads for KONA, Io and T-TAP products, and is used throughout the industry to provide accurate and detailed evaluations of drive performance statistics. This information allows users to predict the capabilities of any drive system for recording and playing back various resolutions and codecs.

Note: The downloads for System Test Lite v16.0 from this page are for the Apple Store and Windows standalone versions of System Test.

Fine-tune Drive Performance

Perform a speed test of any drive, including network mapped drives, to give you insight into the read/write performance and overall throughput of the system. The information provided by AJA System Test allows you to refine and tune drive speeds and system performance to provide the bandwidth necessary for the demands of production and postproduction.

Graphical Interface

System Test clearly displays the current test results as well as configuration information in an easy-to-use graphical interface. Pulldown menus allow you to quickly choose what type of test to run, which drive to evaluate, the video size and frame rate as well as overall file size and any connected video device.

PCIe Testing

In addition to disk performance, the full version of System Test (included in the full Desktop software downloads) can also evaluate your PCIe bandwidth to determine if your system configuration can support various data rates to PCIe-based I/O devices. With larger image formats, PCIe performance is becoming more critical and System Test gives you visibility into your systems performance throughout the entire image delivery pipeline.

Detailed Results

Choose to display your results as MB/sec or FPS with graphed displays to help you easily spot trends in performance.

Reporting

The report generator creates a text display from any test which can be copied into spreadsheets or other software for more detailed analysis and archiving.
