Windows 10 drivers for Apogee One, Duet and Quartet USB interfaces now available

Apogee is pleased to announce Windows 10 compatibility for the latest generations of ONE, Duet and Quartet USB audio interfaces. Customers who purchase the latest generation of these products can now register and download a Windows 10 compatible software installer from Apogee’s website. Existing customers also have access to the download. The software is available now.

The new Windows software installers include a firmware update for the hardware, custom Apogee ASIO audio driver and PC compatible version of Apogee’s Maestro application for controlling audio interface settings and low latency monitoring. All the same functionality currently available to Mac and iOS users is now available to Windows 10 users and the same interface can be used on either Mac, PC or iOS.

Apogee finally releases Windows drivers for its (old) audio interfaces

Apogee have been making high-quality audio interfaces for Apple Mac for many years. They’ve been matching Apple’s style and aesthetic and probably consider themselves the ideal pro audio partner. So it is with some astonishment that Apogee have calmly announced that they are releasing Windows 10 drivers for some of their old USB interfaces.

Maybe Microsoft sent them a Surface Book and Apogee realised they could do product shots with a decent looking PC laptop without ruining their aesthetic. Or maybe they’ve got a warehouse full of USB audio interfaces they can’t shift because Apple users are all buying Thunderbolt. Whatever the reason Apogee are releasing Windows 10 drivers for the ONE, Duet and Quartet this November.

As a Windows user, I have long coveted Apogee products. They make great stuff. But now that they are within my grasp why am I not as excited as perhaps I should be? The Quartet was released in 2012, the Duet in 2013. The ONE was originally released in 2013 although the Windows compatible version will be the one with the Silver finish that they released last year. So these are old interfaces. Surely it would be better to release something new and exciting? This does feel a bit like they are trying to shift boxes rather than opening up their awesome products to new markets and opportunities.

That said the Duet and Quartet, in particular, are classy audio interfaces. They are right up my street in terms of form factor and functionality. I always prefer a tabletop audio interface, and those big silver knobs and the OLED display are awesome. The quality is also first class and they have a premium price tag to match. It just feels like an after-thought. But that’s no reason to reject a fabulous audio interface. So thank-you Apogee. Thank-you for thinking of us Windows users and letting us into your high-quality world of audio. I can’t wait to get my hands on a nice shiny 5-year-old audio interface.

Тем интереснее посмотреть на продукт Apogee для массового рынка. В нижнем ценовом сегменте конкуренция очень острая. Чтобы иметь хоть какие-то шансы войти на этот рынок, устройство должно быть по меньшей мере революционным. Это подтверждает пример компаний, сделавших ставку исключительно на громкое имя — никакого успеха они не добились. Посмотрим, удастся ли это сделать Apogee.

Apogee ONE был объявлен в 2009 году в качестве самого недорогого интерфейса производства Apogee. В настоящее время новинка уже продается, рекомендованная цена на мировом рынке составляет $249, в России чуть выше. Это уже второй подобный интерфейс в доступной ценовой категории, первым был Apogee Duet.

По сути Apogee ONE является законеченным устройством для персональной звукозаписи. Привычного стереовхода и стереовыхода у устройства нет. Вход только один, и он моно. Но зато присутствует гитарный и +48 В микрофонный предусилители, а на разветвителе полноценные большие разъемы TRS и XLR.

Выход только стерео миниджек, рассчитанный главным образом на наушники, так как оборудован специальным наушниковым усилителем. Он может переключиться и работать в режиме линейного, но подключить мониторы с XLR разъемами к выходу стереоминиджек будет не так просто.

Для тех, кому нужен полноценный интерфейс звукозаписи для интеграции в имеющуюся студию лучше сразу смотреть на Apogee Duet. Зато новичкам, имеющим из аппаратуры максимум наушники, интерфейс Apogee ONE будет весьма кстати. Он также подойдет самым обычным пользователям, которым требуется время от времени надиктовать подкаст или наложить комментарии к домашнему видео. Удобная рукоятка громкости с цифровой регулировкой пригодится для повседневного использования компьютера.

Как и в других интерфейсах Apogee, здесь поддерживается только платформа Mac, требуется ОС версии 10.5.7 и выше. Драйверов для Windows нет и не планируется. Интерфейс Apogee ONE совместим с любым Core Audio приложением, в том числе Apple iTunes, GarageBand, Logic, Final Cut и другие.

Внешний вид

В комплекте с устройством никаких креплений не идет. Штативное крепление, тренога, трехметровый USB кабель и красивый кейс докупается отдельно. Устройство комплектуется только коротеньким USB проводом и разъемным разветвителем.

Габариты устройства достаточно малы, чуть больше мобильного телефона. Размер корпуса ONE составляет всего 5,5 x 12 x 2 сантиметров. Корпус устройства изготовлен из пластика. Для большей привлекательности лицевая поверхность ONE выполнена глянцевой. Для удобства в использовании снизу на корпусе предусмотрены резиновые ножки, а ребристые поверхности по бокам необходимы для прочного крепления в штативном крепеже.

Устройство оснащено большим удобным дискретным регулятором, выполняющим функцию кнопки переключения регулируемого параметра. При изменении настраиваемого режима в центре экрана отображается стилизованный значок с индикатором изменяемого уровня.

На корпусе также имеется трехуровневый индикатор регулируемого сигнала: зеленый, желтый и красный. Кроме того распложенные в верхней части значки подсвечиваются в зависимости от инициализации режима работы.

Разъем миниждек для подключения наушников располагается внизу. USB-разъем и гнездо для разветвителя находятся с противоположной стороны. Встроенный микрофон расположен в нижней части корпуса под регулятором громкости.

Панель управления

В версии программы Maestro 1.9.2. панель управления ONE выполнена в виде двух вкладок.

Из панели Maestro Control доступен выбор режимов работы входа и выхода. Важно, что при смене режима работы выставленные уровни в режимах сохраняются. Напомним доступные режимы работы входа: (Int Mic) втроенный микрофон;(Ext Mic) внешний микрофонный; (Ext 48V Mic) внешний микрофонный с фантомным питанием (Inst) инструментальный. Выход работает в двух режимах. Линейный (Amp) нерегулируемый или регулируемый наушниковый (Stereo). На выходе имеется также режим mute.

В секции микшера находятся индикаторы уровня с регуляторами для мониторинга. Input 1 представляет собой апаратный мониторинг входа, а регулятор From Software — програмный.

Встроенный микрофон

Для того что бы определить качество используемого микрофона в ONE мы провели небольшое сравнение. В нашем тесте мы использовали несколько электретных микрофонов наиболее отличающихся между собой классом. Использовался микрофон дешевой гарнитуры Creative, профессиональный петличный микрофон AKG C417. В качестве референсного микрофона мы взяли высококласный Earthworks M50. Запись всех микрофонов производилась в программе Logic Pro, в одинаковых условиях.

Сравнив записи, мы выяснили, что используемый в ONE микрофон заметно превосходит дешевую гарнитуру и по качеству сравним с петличным AKG C417. На наш взгляд это является очень хорошим результатом. Произведенная запись на Earthworks позволяет говорить об использовании в ONE обрезного фильтра басов, который исключает бубнение при записи. Средние частоты имеют специфический окрас. Запись произведенная на ОNE получается достаточно яркой. Очевидно, что в заявлениях производителя под оптимизацией микрофона для устройства имелась в виду аппаратная эквализация на низких и высоких.

На сайте производителя выложены для ознакомления тестовые аудио записи, сделанные на встроенный микрофон ONE различных музыкальных инструментов. Можно подумать, что используемый микрофон является полноценной заменой широкомембранных студийных микрофонов. В этом же нас пытаются убедить рекламные описания в духе «легендарного студийного качества Apogee». И хотя встроенный в ONE микрофон является достойным компромиссом, следует понимать, что это всё равно начальный уровень. Используемая электронная начинка в дорогостоящем оборудовании Apogee совершенно другого уровня. Это ясно хотя бы из измерений, которые может повторить любой желающий.
