Apple remote with windows

Apple Remote Desktop is the best way to manage the Mac computers on your network. Distribute software, provide real-time online help to end users, create detailed software and hardware reports, and automate routine management tasks—all without leaving your desk. Featuring Automator actions and Remote Spotlight search, Apple Remote Desktop makes your job easier than ever.

Apple Remote Desktop is the award-winning OS X desktop management system for software distribution, asset management, and remote assistance. Apple Remote Desktop offers a wide range of high-performance features, including lightning-fast Spotlight searches across multiple systems; more than 40 Automator actions for easy automation of repetitive tasks; and AutoInstall for automatically updating software on mobile systems once they return to the network.

First-class upgrades

Installing software or updates to your network has never been this easy. Take an existing package, from either Apple or a third party, and simply use the Install Package to copy and install on your client computers. And it works with custom install packages as well. Apple Remote Desktop will alert your system’s users to upgrades and even restart machines remotely.

AutoInstall allows you to stage software on a Task Server, which then takes care of distributing the packages for installation on client computers. You can even set a schedule for installation to occur at a time that is most convenient for your organization. And if a computer is not on the network, the Task Server will keep track and automatically install the package once the system is online.

Automation for your Mac computers

Those time-consuming administrative tasks will become a thing of the past, thanks to Automator actions in Apple Remote Desktop. To use Automator actions, all you need to do is drag and drop the actions to construct a workflow.

More than 40 Automator actions are included with Apple Remote Desktop, which you can apply to set desktop pictures, Finder preferences, Energy Saver preferences, default time zones, and more.

No need to make house calls

The screen-sharing features of Apple Remote Desktop allow you to provide immediate help to remote users, saving time for both of you. Don’t want your admin tasks to be seen? No problem. Turn on Curtain Mode to block the local user’s view of their desktop. This is perfect when you’re updating a public display. You’ll have full control of the system, but your work will be hidden from view.

If you need to move files or folders to a single computer, the easy-to-use Remote Drag and Drop copy function makes the job a snap. You can also copy and paste between local and remote systems — no extra steps necessary.

Reporting for duty

Remote Spotlight search takes advantage of one of the most powerful features of OS X. Now you can perform lightning-fast, user-specified searches on remote client systems. Files from the results can be copied to the administrator system for reporting.

Apple Remote Desktop also makes it easy to compile reports on application usage, history, inventory, and more. Hardware reports gather more than 200 attributes about networked Mac systems, while software reports collect information on 16 file system attributes. Inventory reports can be gathered even from mobile systems not connected to the network, and results are stored in the included SQL database for fast access.

Set up a computer running VNC software for Remote Desktop

VNC access is determined by the VNC software. To access a computer running VNC, you only need to know the IP address or fully qualified domain name and the password designated in the VNC software. The VNC password doesn’t necessarily correspond to any other password on the system.

Set up a non-macOS client running VNC software

You can set up a non-macOS client to be viewed with Remote Desktop.

Install the VNC Server software and assign a VNC password on the client computer.

Make sure the client’s firewall has the VNC port open (TCP 5900).

For more detailed instructions on steps 1–2, see the documentation that came with the client operating system, VNC software, and firewall software.

Make sure “Encrypt all network data” isn’t selected in the Security pane of Remote Desktop preferences.

If you encrypt network data, you won’t be able to control the VNC client, because Remote Desktop can’t open the necessary SSH tunnel to that computer. When you try to control a computer running VNC software, you see a warning that the keystrokes aren’t encrypted.

Add the computer to the All Computers list in Remote Desktop using the client’s IP address.

Enter the client computer’s VNC password in the Remote Desktop authentication dialog.

Configure a client to be controlled by non-Apple VNC software

You can configure a Remote Desktop client to be controlled with non–Apple VNC software. Allowing non–Apple VNC software access to a Remote Desktop client is less secure than using Remote Desktop to control the client. The VNC protocol implemented in non–Apple VNC software may not encrypt keystrokes sent over the network, so sensitive information can be intercepted. Also, the non–Apple VNC software expects the password to be stored in a cryptographically unsecured form and location. Granting VNC access to control a screen is the most powerful feature in Remote Desktop, and provides nearly unrestricted access.

WARNING: Don’t select a VNC password that’s the same as the password of any local user on the client computer or of the Remote Desktop administrator.

On the client computer, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sharing, then select Remote Management in the list at the left.

Click Computer Settings, then select “VNC viewers may control screen with password.”

Enter a VNC password, then click OK.

Change the VNC port on an existing computer

After you add a computer running VNC software to a computer list (or when you’re first adding it), you can set a custom port for VNC communication, and you can designate a display to control.

In Remote Desktop , select a computer list in the sidebar of the main window, select a computer running VNC software, then choose File > Get Info.

Click Edit, edit the Screen Sharing Port field, then click Done.

Designate a custom VNC port when adding a computer

You can pick a custom VNC port on which to view clients. Custom VNC ports are used for Network Address Translation (NAT) implementations, firewall settings, or viewing multiple displays.

In Remote Desktop , choose File > Add by Address, then enter the following:

The IP address or fully qualified domain name of the client computer

The user name and password

If the client computer uses NAT, click the Advanced Options triangle.

Enter the public ports that are mapped to the client in the Remote Management Port field and the Screen Sharing Port field, then click Add.

Tips and shortcuts for working with Remote Desktop

Use these tips to work more quickly while using Remote Desktop to manage computers and interact with users.

Select computers from any window

Any computer in any window—report windows, task windows, computer lists, observe windows—can be a target for a task. For example, if you’re observing ten computer screens and need to send a text message to one, select the screen with a single click, then choose Interact > Send Message.

Drag items to configuration and interaction dialogs

If a configuration or interaction dialog contains a list of files or other items, such as computers, you can drag similar items to that list to add them.

Customize the Remote Desktop toolbar

Add items to the toolbar for the tasks you do the most. Choose whether to display toolbar items as text, icons, or both.

Make lists from reports or other lists

If you want to make a list based on the outcome of a report, just sort the computers in the report by the desired column, select the computers you want, and make a new list from the selection. If you double-click the list icon, you open another window containing the computers in the list. You can then easily compare the lists, or drag computers from the new list to other lists.

Save tasks and task templates to save time

Save your tasks, and duplicate them. With a little editing, you can have a number of similar tasks for specific uses. Alternatively, you can use task templates to save settings across task dialogs, applying the same settings through various tasks.

Control computers with slow network connections

When you observe or control a client computer that’s using a slow Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, screen sharing updates might happen more slowly. To speed up screen updates, use a solid color like black or gray for the desktop of the screen you’re observing or sharing. You may also want to set the control and observe image quality to the lowest acceptable setting. You can also reduce the use of animation on remote computers. For example, you can use Dock preferences to disable animation, magnification, and automatic hiding for the Dock.

Use an Apple Remote in Windows with Boot Camp on Mac

In Windows on an Intel-based Mac equipped with a built-in infrared receiver, you can pair it with an Apple Remote to control iTunes and Windows Media Player, if they’re installed on the Mac. You can use the remote to open iTunes, change the sound volume, start or pause playback, and skip to the next or previous item.

If the remote has an unobstructed line of sight to the receiver, it can work at a distance of up to 30 feet.

Pair your Mac with a remote

If you have more than one infrared-equipped Mac in the same location, you can connect, or pair, each Mac with a specific Apple Remote, so that each Mac takes commands only from the paired remote. A Mac that isn’t paired with a remote can take commands from any remote within range.

You can pair a Mac with only one remote at a time.

Hold the remote close to the Mac (3 to 4 inches away), then point the remote at the front of the Mac.

Press and hold the Menu and Next buttons on the remote for about 5 seconds, until a chain link symbol appears onscreen.

Unpair your Mac from an Apple Remote

If you want to use your Mac with a different remote, you must unpair it from the first remote.

In Windows on your Mac, click in the right side of the taskbar, click the Boot Camp icon , then choose Boot Camp Control Panel.

If a User Account Control dialog appears, click Yes.

Click Remote, then click Unpair.

Disable remote control

To prevent your Mac from being controlled by a remote control, turn off infrared reception.

In Windows on your Mac, click in the right side of the taskbar, click the Boot Camp icon , then choose Boot Camp Control Panel.

If a User Account Control dialog appears, click Yes.

Click Remote, then select “Disable remote control infrared receiver.”

If you don’t see the Remote pane in the Boot Camp Control Panel, your Mac can’t be controlled by a remote control.
