Thunderbolt Device Manager won’t authenticate Apple Thunderbolt Display on Windows 10

I have a new Alienware 15″ laptop with a Thunderbolt 3 port. I bought the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. When I plug the monitor into the adapter and the adapter into the Thunderbolt 3 port on the laptop, a dialog box («Approve Thunderbolt Devices») appears from asking me to approve the connection of the «Apple, Inc. Thunderbolt Display.» When I select «Always Connect» or «Connect Only Once,» nothing happens. When I go into «Managed Connected Devices» it is not connected. When I select «View Attached Devices,» it shows the «Apple, Inc. Thunderbolt Display» is attached to Port 1. If I click on it, it says «Connection Status» is «Not connected.» Clicking on «Not connected» reopens the dialog box to approve Thunderbolt devices as above. Again, when selecting either approval option, it does nothing.

I’ve searched the web for this problem many ways and all the advice basically just says to select «Always Connect» which isn’t working in my case. Any help would be much appreciated.

Since your Alienware 15 laptop and the Apple devices or products have different manufacturers, we would like to recommend running our utility called Driver Verifier. Visit this thread: Driver Verifier— tracking down a misbehaving driver created by ZigZag3143 our MVP. This thread has a detailed explanation on how to run this tool to detect incompatibility issues of your hardware or drivers with your computer.

To start this utility, follow these steps:

  1. Press Windows + S to open Search Box.
  2. Type verifier, then press Enter.
  3. When prompted by UAC. Click Yes to launch this utility.

In addition, you can download and run our easy fix solutions from this link: How to use Microsoft easy fix solutions. Once there, click the Find and fix problems with devices and hardware hyperlink. Download and run it to start the troubleshooting.

If the tool doesn’t detect anything, you may contact computer manufacturer’s support team (which is Dell) directly for confirmation if this device/driver is compatible with Apple products.

Please respond to this thread to let me know how the issue progresses. Similarly, if you have more questions, please inform me by replying to this post.

I have successfully connected an Apple Thunderbolt Display to an older Windows laptop running an older set of drivers so it is possible to drive the display from Windows.

My belief is that the reason is that this no longer works is that support for Thunderbolt 2 host hubs was dropped from the Intel Thunderbolt driver. Apple Thunderbolt Displays have a hub in them and that hub is unusual so it may have needed something that was dropped.

However I did not set up the laptop so it may also be that some special driver (from Apple?) was installed on it. I don’t have access to the laptop at the moment and I’m not sure how to check which driver is used for a particular piece of hardware on Windows. If someone is willing to carry the fight further I can arrange to have the laptop connected to the display in mid-August and can run checks on it. That assumes that the laptop still has the same set of drivers and still works with the display.

вроде как все сводится к тому, что проблемы с драйверами

Question: Q: Thunderbolt 27 display problems Windows 10

I own a Macbook Pro mid 2013 which I bought with a thunderbolt display 27. I prefer Windows 10 to Mac OS, so that is my main OS. Since TB is not hotpluggable in WIndows, I usually leave my mac at the office and take a PC with me. This has worked ok, but occasionally I do take the computer home. Lately the macbook has started having problems with reconnecting to the display again if I take the computer with me or after I have used it without the tb display. I start over with the display connected to the TB port from power-up (either with the integral TB cable or another TB cable), but I only get picture on the internal screen. The TB27 stays black, but has got the sound and ethernet connections right.

— I have tried both TB ports of the mac.

— Sound, ethernet and other ports on the display work when connected before startup, but no picture.

— I have tried reinstalling nvidia (650m) drivers, as well as repaired bootcamp software

— I have tried resetting SMC/nvram (not sure if the latter does anything)

— Some times I have managed getting the picture back after a number of reboots hot and cold, but then it will loose the display if I take the computer with me or disconnect and reconnect

— Earlier today I once managed to get picture back after uninstalling graphics drivers, but then I lost it agian suddenly, and I haven’t been able to reconnect after that.

— I am currently in OS X which works flawlessly with the display.

— Display seems to have latest firmware: 26, 2. Ports: 2.0.7.

— I have the latest version of Mac OS.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Question: Q: Thunderbolt Display Windows 10 Boot Camp

I have installed Windows 10 on my MacBook Pro Retina Mid 2012. I’m using 2 external Displays, but the Thunderbolt Display show’s only a black screen. All ports (USB, FW, Ethernet) on that Display work fine. I have updated all software.

Are both your external displays Thunderbolt?

Jan 9, 2017 11:55 AM

the other display is a LG stock 24″ Display using with HDMI.

Jan 9, 2017 11:57 AM

Does the TB display work correctly if you reboot W10 with both displays already physically connected?

The LG works correctly but the TB Display stays black (the ports works). On MacOS, all displays work just as they should.

Jan 9, 2017 12:21 PM

If you disconnect the LG, and reboot W10 does the TB display work?

Jan 9, 2017 1:42 PM

Tried it too with everything plugged out.

Jan 9, 2017 1:49 PM

Disconnect the LG, run the following procedure

and boot into Windows with the TB display connected and test?

Do you have any unknown devices in Windows Device Manager?

Jan 9, 2017 1:59 PM

That didn’t help either.

I plugged everything out of the Mac and the Display, but it still show’s no image.

Everything is fine in my Device Manager, there are no unknown devices.

Let me test this configuration using MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) — Technical Specifications and a Dell with HDMI.

Jan 9, 2017 4:24 PM

I did not have an exact environment for testing. The test used a late 2013 15-in rMBP, Apple TB Monitor and a Dell U2717 via HDMI running Windows 7. Windows 10 should also work with this setup. The difference in GPUs (GT650m — MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2012) — Technical Specifications vs GT750m — MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) — Technical Specifications ) should not be causing such behavior.

1. TB Monitor connected and automatic drivers installation.

2. After W7 Reboot, no HDMI connection yet.

Question: Q: Windows 10 thunderbolt display not working

I had upgraded my late 2013 MacBook Pro to Windows 10. The Bluetooth driver didn’t work, but just about everything else did. I just updated Boot Camp and now my Thunderbolt display is not recognized by Windows. I’ve reinstalled the Boot Camp 6 update, rebooted, etc. No joy. Anyone encountered / solved this issue?

a. If i plug in the TB display after booting, nothing works.

This is expected since Bootcamp drivers do understand the TB hot-plug.

b. If i boot to windows with TB inserted, USB and Ethernet work but display does not.

This indicates a problem with the Graphics driver, not the TB driver. What GPU do you have? 13-in is Intel-only, but 15-in is Intel/nVidia GT750m. What are the GPU driver versions?

1. Does the TB display work properly on the OS X side?

2. If you have a TB-to-Ethernet adapter, can you test if the Ethernet connection works properly. The same thing can also be tested with TB-to-FW adapter, or another TB-to(HDMI/DVI/VGA).

3. Do non-TB monitors work properly in Windows?

Aug 18, 2015 5:52 PM

  1. Yes, Works fine in OS X.
  2. USB and Ethernet on the TB Display work in Boot Camp.
  3. I’ll try a TB to HDMI/DVI/VGA adapter tomorrow. I’ve never had any luck with them in the past using boot camp.

Aug 18, 2015 6:23 PM

USB and Ethernet on the TB Display work in Boot Camp.

a. Windows is running, you plug the TB cable in. Are you saying USB ports and Ethernet ports are live and usable and Display does not work?

b. Windows is down, plug the TB monitor cable, boot and/or switch to Windows, and USB and Ethernet work, but the Display does not?

Under About This Mac | Displays, it lists, «Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB»

I found the driver install from Intel and it is working. Thank you!

New MacBook Pro 15 Retina with GeForce GT750M.

I can’t get the TB to work my secondary display. (HP LA2405x)

The NVIDIA app shows the Windows 10 Driver 355.82 released 8/31/15

Sep 1, 2015 5:56 AM

Do the ports on the TB work, but just not the monitor? Older Macs do not support TB hot-plug. GT750m is a 2013/2014 model.

Sep 1, 2015 9:23 AM

MacBook Pro 15 Retina is a 2015 model. I could not get WIN7 boot camp to work at all and found out the 2015’s dropped WIN7. So I went with WIN10 and it works fine, except for the TB display. Don’t have any other need for TB, so not sure how to verify. Plus first Mac ever, so not Mac peripherals to test.

It looks like others have trouble with TB display in WIN10. But as on this thread, were able to get it to work.

I Updated the Boot Camp drivers with BCA two times, with no luck.

Sep 2, 2015 5:21 AM

Run the same test as DrDroop and check if Ethernet or USB or FW on the TB display work or not. Since you have a 15in, we may need to check the drivers. Do you have any unknown devices in Windows Device Manager? Was your W10 an upgrade or a clean install?

1. Are Thunderbolt devices “hot pluggable” using Windows with Boot Camp?

Thunderbolt hot plug is supported under Windows 8 or 8.1 on all 2014 and later Mac computers.

For all other Mac computers, Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 scans and activates Thunderbolt devices connected to Thunderbolt ports only during the Windows startup process. If your device was not plugged in at start up, Windows will not detect it without a restart.

I have iMac 27 inch w/Retina. I installed Windows 10 via Boot Camp.

I added an external monitor (Toshiba TV Monitor which works fine as a secondary monitor with Mac OS X on this iMac 27 w/Retina).

The external monitor is simply NOT recognized in Windows 10. I rebooted with it plugged in, etc. I attempted to install a new WIndows driver for the AMD graphics card, etc.

The weird thing is, I had a 21.5 inch iMac for a week (I took it back and upgraded to the 27 inch). During that week, I had windows 10 installed on it and the same external monitor worked fine, in both Mac OS X Yosemite and Windows 10. For real.

My conclusion is, one of two things is going on:

1) The 27 inch iMac w/Retina’s AMD graphics card is the issue (as it is the only difference in the scenarios), or

2) One must have the external monitor hooked up and on while preparing and installing the Windows 10 installation. In other words, maybe Thunderbolt itself is not recognized because nothing was hooked to it while running Boot Camp Assistant. But I be damned if I’m going to reinstall Windows 10 again.

Any way to tell under Windows 10 if Thunderbolt is working? I have no other Thunderbolt peripherals to try.
