Can’t Play Shockwave Flash?

I have some files that will not play in Ubuntu. Under properties it says:
Shockwave Flash File (application/x-shockwave-flash

I can view flash on the Internet but not on Ubuntu. It will play on Windows XP

Here is an example of the type of file on the Internet that I am talking about.

Can you view this in your browser? Why can’t the same type of file play in Ubuntu?

I went to the link, it is an add-on for Firefox. I have no problem viewing flash in Firefox. The problem is viewing the file when it is on my hard drive.

Well, I use ubuntu and can view the page in epiphany and firefox.
Though I have flash plugin installed. I guess you haven’t installed it?
You could try the open-source variant first:

1. Applications > Ubuntu Software Center > Search for «gnash»
2. Install the «Plugin for Mozilla and derivatives»
3. Restart browser and try to load the page

If that doesn’t work you can try Adobe flash plugin

1. Applications > Ubuntu Software Center > Search for «adobe»
2. Install the «Adobe Flash Plugin»
3. Restart browser and try to load the page

So you’ve no problem with flash in browser, but you’d like to play a SWF file on computer?
Try VLC like above poster suggests, or install standalone Gnash SWF Viewer.

I must not be making my self clear. I do not have a problem with viewing the website in Ubuntu. I can view Flash on Firefox with no problem.

I installed a program called Flip Book Maker from http://www.ncesoft.com/flip-book-maker.html

The program is installed on my Windows XP. It is the same type of file that is on the website I gave you the link to. I saved the files to my external drive, it plays on XP but won’t play in Ubuntu.

I tried installing Gnash from the software manager, It doesn’t work, I also tried dragging the .swf file in firefox and chrome but it just downloads the .swf file.

gnash may be in the repos but if yopu look at their home site you’ll see it hasn’t been updated since 2012. So I’m not surprised it doesn’t work.

Interesting. In Windows both browsers I have (IE & Firefox) play them directly and without problem but it seems Firefox will not play it in my Linux Mint machine.

Some Internet searching recommends reinstalling the Firefox SWF plugin.

OK, I got it to work on Firefox. The Flash plugin was configured to not run on «dangerous» sites. I removed that checkmark and now it is working.

ETA: Sorry, not really. In Windows I can just open the SWF directly with any browser. In Linux I need to embed the SWF in a HTML document.

That is one long thread. To save others the trouble of having to wade through it I will note here how I fixed the problem.

In your home directory create a new document called .mime.types (note the «.» in front, this is a hidden file).
In it put only one line

Next, edit Firefox’s configuration for it to play local .swf files. Open firefox, type about:config in the url, when the warning comes up click you accept the risks. Then in the search type plugins locate the string plugins.http_https_only, click on value and change it to false.

Restart FF and SWF files should play directly.

Shockwave is a multimedia player. Designed by Macromedia in the mid 1990s, it was followed by Shockwave Flash (or just Flash), a simpler format which became far more popular. Today, Shockwave is most commonly used for Internet games.

Installation

Unfortunately, the Shockwave player is only available for Windows. On a PC, it may be possible to run Shockwave under Ubuntu using Wine and running the Windows versions of Firefox and the Shockwave player. (Wine does not work on PowerPC and may not work as expected on 64-bit PCs.) You can then use mozplugger, a program that lets you «embed» other programs in your web browser.

First, install the wine and mozplugger packages (for information on how to do this, see InstallingSoftware).

You then need to install the Windows version of Firefox (yes, you read that right). Download it from Mozilla’s web site. Choose to open the installer with Wine and follow the on-screen instructions.

When the installation has finished, you then have to go to a web site that requires Shockwave, and choose to get the missing plugin. Again, follow the on-screen instructions, and when the plugin has installed and is working, you may close Firefox.

Now you need to configure mozplugger to use the Windows version of Firefox for Shockwave files. From a terminal, type:

Add the following two lines to the end of the file:

Finally, you need to make Firefox reload the plugin database. Close all Firefox windows and run this command in a terminal:

In later versions this file may have been moved:

Replace «RANDOM-STRING» with the random string your Mozilla has assigned for your computer.

Removal of pluginreg.dat wasn’t needed with Ubuntu 9.04 and Firefox 3.0.14.

Congratulations, you should now have a working, if not convuluted, Shockwave setup. You can test it on the Test Macromedia Shockwave & Flash Players page. However, some Shockwave objects may not work. See the issues and workaround solutions section below.

Note: If you want to use Shockwave from multiple user accounts on the same machine, you have to repeat the following steps while logged in as each user: download, install, and launch Windows Firefox; download Shockwave plugin; remove pluginreg.dat if needed.

Issues and workarounds

Objects appear in a small window of their own

Cause 1: Wine or Shockwave is still running in the background.

Workaround 1: Type this in a terminal to end all wine processes:

Cause 2: mozplugger does not handle multiple objects. Unfortunately, there is no fix currently known for this.

Firefox is asking for restoring old sessions before playing objects

Cause: Session restore is enabled in the Windows version of Firefox

Workaround 1: Type this in a terminal to end all wine processes:

• Start the Windows version of Firefox. Type «about:config» in the Location Bar and press Enter. Search for «browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash» and double click to set it to false.

Objects claim they’re «stolen»

Cause (when using streaming): The Shockwave object expects the «Referrer» HTTP header to be set, which mozplugger does not do.

Workaround: None yet.

Shockwave player shows «Adobe Shockwave Player is now installing» but gets no further

Cause (not verified): Shockwave Player 11 may not work under Wine

Workaround: Install Windows Shockwave Player version 9.0.0.434 from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/186/tn_18629.html, Adobe Technote «Stand-alone installers for Shockwave Player: previous versions only» (linked from Shockwave «Support Center» link on http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/).

Вот что я бы сделал последовательно (в терминале, как водится; если хочется по кнопочкам тыкать, это сложнее, но спрашивайте если надо):

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-restricted-extras
sudo apt-get autoremove && sudo apt-get autoclean && sudo apt-get clean

Перезагрузиться (чтобы новое ядро заработало, ну, и настройки все по-новой применились).
И посмотреть, что будет.

Вот ещё Google нашёл варианты:

1. » Сбой модуля Shockwave flash» проблема решилась
В общем нужно в адресной строке Chromium написать «about:plugins» нажми ENTER, там увидите список подключаемых модулей, справа нажмите на подробную информацию «+». После в списке найдите «Flash» и если у вас будет 2 модуля » Shockwave Flash » один из них отключите, и все заработает =)
Сбой происходил из-за конфликта двух модулей !

2.Проблема решилась установкой более старой версии flash player(скачать можно например вот тут http://pkgs.org/ubuntu-12.04/ubuntu-mul . 6.deb.html .) Никакие последние версии человеку не помогали.
Если окажется что ваш компьютер не хочет работать с новой версией flash player можно в synaptic раздел Пакет заблокировать версию flashplugin-installer ,чтобы не обновлялся вместе с системой.
