i just updated my system to xfce 4.4.1-1 thunar exo etc.

Re: Thunar No Suitable Archive Manager Found
right-mouse click (open with different application) and then select an archive manager.
Otherwise, try re-installing the plugin and the mime-db, because one of them might be broken.

sorrry i did that already. the open file works so the extract here and extract
but if i right click on a file and select create archive then the same message appears.
to update mime do u mean update-mime-database /usrr/share/mime ??

Re: Thunar No Suitable Archive Manager Found
Hello.
Same problem here with thunar and xarchiver after the last update.
And I also miss the notification settings icon in the settings menu.
The notification-settings binary is still in /opt/xfce4/bin/ and not upgraded; it’s the only module still there.
I think we’ll have an update soon, right?
O.

Then the archive manager in question might not be associated with zip archives, which one do you use?

Re: Thunar No Suitable Archive Manager Found
I have removed squeeze 0.1.0, and compiled / installed squeeze from svn.
I must say that i don’t really know what the autotools ‘make install’ does that the pacman update doesn’t.
But this seems to solve the tap issue :S

i have put all entries from /opt/xfce4/usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache to the in in /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache and have no problems. i can right-click on folders and create an archive using squeeze.

Then, to solve this, they should run ‘update-desktop-database’ and restart xfce. (IIRC)

Re: Thunar No Suitable Archive Manager Found
It works perfectly, thanks to both. No need to restart xfce after ‘update-desktop-database’.
Anyway, when something goes wrong after a big update like this, is there an ‘arch way’ to directly inform the manteiner or not? I suppose that he will provide an update soon for everybody. Am i wrong?
Greetings and thanks for the great great distro.

Archive manager arch linux
To extract packages on archlinux, by default you can use command line like tar. But there’s another easy way using file manager. But you must install required packages first.
For extracting zip files you need install zip & unzip
For extracting rar files you need install unrar
Software like winrar/winzip, you can try xarchiver, or file-roller from AUR.
Install these packages first:
#pacman -S xarchiver p7zip zip unzip unrar
Done. Then you can extract/unzip or compress into archive on file manager.
Extracting |
Compress |
For GUI like winrar/winzip there are 2 apps installed fileroller and 7zip, both of them look OK, but File-Roller is better GUI and simple.
File Roller |
Another best archiver is xarchiver
Download the tarball file, then extract it using tar -xvzf xarchiver.tar.gz
Then makepkg -s, after package created install it using sudo pacman -U *.pkg.tar.xz
Here’s the GUI of xarchiver:
Ok, that’s it, about three software above, i prefered file-roller, then xarchiver, and the last 7zip FM.

Natrio

9 Best Free and Open Source Linux Archive Managers
A file archiver is computer software which brings together a group of files into a single archive file. An archive file is therefore a collection of files and directories that are stored in one file. There are many advantages of storing multiple files this way. For example, an archive is a great way to store backup data, transfer files to another directory, or to a different computer. Archive files are often compressed to save disk space and reduce transfer times.
This type of utility lets users compress, decompress, and archive files and directories. Most archivers also store additional metadata such as user and group permissions, timestamps, and directory structures. Other features often found in archive managers include support for multiple volumes, encryption, Unicode names, password protection, and integration into the shell.
The granddaddy of archive managers is the tar utility (together with the ar and cpio tools). Tar was created in the early days of Unix and remains an essential utility for any Linux system. The filename extension .tar is synonymous with file archives. Other types of archive formats include .iso (for optical storage mediums such as CDROM and DVD-ROMs), .shar, .cpio, and .ar.
Linux has a good range of open source archive managers, both console based (such as tar) or sporting an attractive graphical user interface and integrating with a desktop environment.
Here’s our recommendations. Hopefully there will be something of interest for anyone who wants to backup their data, create new archives, and decompress files downloaded from the internet.
Let’s explore the 9 archive managers at hand. For each title we have compiled its own portal page, a full description with an in-depth analysis of its features, screenshots, together with links to relevant resources.
