Mac
Mac here .
Mac
Mac.
Mac OS
Mac!

Arctic fox browser mac os
Arctic Fox Web Browser
Arctic Fox started as a forked and rebranded Pale Moon 27.9.4 and retains its classic interface. Many fixes and enhancements have been imported from Firefox and TenFourFox.
Arctic Fox aims to be a desktop oriented browser with phone support removed, or no longer updated in the tree.
The goal here is to implement specific security updates and bug fixes to keep this browser as up to date as possible for aging systems. Examples would be Mac OSX 10.6-10.8, PowerPC’s running Linux, Windows XP, etc.
Arctic Fox will build for Mac OS X 10.6 and up, Windows XP, i386/x86_64/PowerPC Linux, and more than likely any other Unix/BSD varient. Ideally, we’d like to get it working on PowerPC 10.5 as well. An older very unofficial 27.9.15 build can be found here: Arctic Fox for 10.4/10.5
ARM support has been reinstantiated, including JIT! MIPS support reinstantiated, too (less tested and only on Little Endian)
With enough swap, 1.2GB of RAM are the absolute minimum tested, 1.5GB is acceptable, 2GB is comfortable, 4GB is recommended. For some tricks, read below.
To build on MacOSX:
- Requires OS X 10.6 as a minimum build environment.
- Install xcode, command line tools and macports.
- Install these via macports:
- sudo port -v install autoconf213 python27 libidl ccache yasm clang-3.7 (clang-3.7 is the minimum known to work).
- Extract source archive somewhere convenient.
- Add a sane .mozconfig (i’ve included some samples).
- From the source directory type: ./mach build
- If it builds (takes about 1 hour on a core2duo) test it with: ./mach run
- Now package it: ./mach package
- The built package will be in /obj_blah_blah/dist
To Build On FreeBSD
- Up to 12.1 compilation fine with Clang and GCC.
- On 12.2 clang fails to build, GCC completes, but binary unstable and fails to package
To Build on OpenBSD
- latest clang tried (8.0) needs -O0 or it will generate a crashing binary (x86-64 only)
- x86 does not hang on sputnik javascript tests while on all other systems it does!
- add LDFLAGS=»-Wl,-z,wxneeded» to relax memory checks
- add TAR=gtar
To Build on NetBSD
- every gcc version tested worked, system one being OK up to gcc8
If you are under memory pressure, try:
- use -g0 in your optimization flags (removes debug information, greatly reducing file sizes)
What has been removed compared to FireFox?
- translation support through translations services
- social panel
- Android support
- metro support
- EME

Arctic Fox browser for 10.6?
Gary Huggins
macrumors newbie
Does anyone use the Arctic Fox browser for their older Mac and if so, could you please explain how to install it?
I have a MacBook Pro, version 10.6.8.

I’m using it right now on 10.6.8 on my main 2010 iMac. Most up to date browser you can get right now it seems, you don’t get crap from Facebook and YouTube about using caveman software, and its compatible with a lot of Firefox add-ons if you can get the older versions somehow.
Whats causing you trouble with installation? You download the file for Snow Leopard (64-bit as all versions of SL run that) https://github.com/wicknix/Arctic-Fox/wiki/Downloads

Already a bit dated though. Facebook and Youtube tend to lag when navigating and some sites just don’t render correctly. I have a 3.6GHz Intel Core i5 with 12GB of memory so its purely down to the software being suck.
I’m comfy using Snow Leopard and I’ll hate it so bad if I have to switch to Catalina just to get a reliable web browser -_-

Version 27.9.19 of ArcticFox (which is based on Mozilla Firefox code) is available now. There’s a weird bug where you have to mess with your profile data in Application Support but it seems like a solid update. Facebook and YouTube aren’t being the machine-bogging monsters they normally are. and time will only tell if that memory leak bug is still there.
So for the time being Snow Leopard users, this is the most up-to-date browser you can use.

Arctic Fox web browser for 10.6 (32 & 64-bit)

29MB) containing the executable and runtime dependencies for wicknix’s ArcticFox rebrand of palemoon 27.9 on 32-bit powerpc linux:
I can’t predict what system config will work and what won’t. That said, you should have gtk+2 libraries installed as a strict minimum from your package manager(AFAIK gtk+3 won’t do). Debian still has a powerpc libgtk2 (2.24) package in jessie repo. This is built on a gentoo system. Keep the decompressed directory as-is. You’ll need a G4 because of the compiler options.
NOTE: If it starts up, but then crashes while loading the home page, you should specify a page to load when starting it up

I would love to see it running on 10.4/10.5 PPC and x86 32bit 10.6. I’ve uploaded the source if anyone wants to take a stab at it. I just don’t have the time. Between working on this for 10.6 (and XaPHER getting it to build and run on ppc linux), while focusing most my time on PM28 for mac, working full time, and keeping my wife happy, i’m tapped.

Uploaded another updated build. This will be my last update for at least a month while i focus on my other projects.
— Fixed the 2 about:home tabs opening at launch.
— Enabled the updater (work in progress for future updates)
— Added some more branding updates that i missed.
— Replaced default help -> feedback url to point to this thread rather than pm’s forum.
— about: release notes now points to arctic fox’s download url with the readme (changelog) instead of pm’s release notes.
— Adjusted a few more default about:config preferences.

Thanks. I’ve gotten used to digging into oldstable repos to find library packages, that sid is missing, to build certain packages. I’ll most likely unbox my iBook and give it a whirl tomorrow, since there’s a minor delay in my relocation plans that came up.
EDIT: @XaPHER Gave it a try tonight. Works great right out of the box in sid. I need to play around a bit to see if there are any issues but I haven’t come across anything bad so far. Fired up without crashing on the home page at all. YouTube actually streams videos in 360p without the blue hue issue that the other, older browsers have. All of the plugins that @wicknix archived also seem to work fine. I’ll explore some more and report my findings, then perhaps we can discuss sharing the archive with others testing sid on PPC32 (such as the Debian Ports list). I’ll leave that up to you and @wicknix , barring any issues that I may find in my testing.
Thanks for the archive!
The «blue hue» in the screenshot below is from the lighting in the video and not any browser issue. In older browsers, it’s much more pronounced, and definitely an endian issue with those browsers that (upon pondering it) I could probably have fixed if I could find the color bit order within the older browsers’ code. maybe?
Testing archive.org’s reader, which works perfectly:
So. one issue I ran across was the blue hue issue in some pictures. Here’s a comparison of a page with the issue in Arctic Fox on my iBook G4 with the same page in Firefox on my Mac Pro. The picture on the far left stays static, while the text and images on the right scroll. The images within the article itself are of the correct color, with a couple of exceptions that I theorize is due to the way that they’ve been resized. I’m probably wrong and need to test this theory more throughly:
I haven’t come across this issue on any other page as of yet.
Bookmarks within folders also do not show up in the bookmarks pull-down, the bookmarks toolbar, or the menu. IIRC, an old version of Iceweasel under Wheezy exhibited the same issue. Not a big deal, though.
