How do I change the aspect ratio of my monitor?
I have been trying to change the aspect ratio of my monitor from its default 4:3 to 16:9. The aspect ratio was fine until the VGA outlet in my PC stopped working, and moving it to the other VGA outlet seems to have reset the aspect ratio to 4:3.
Display Settings only lets me select a resolution of 800×600, 1024×768, or 1280×1024, all of which are 4:3. I have been Googling ‘how to change aspect ratio’, but all of the solution I am finding are telling me to go to ‘advanced display options’ —which doesn’t seem to exist.
I have also tried to change the resolution with the options of my monitor itself, but the only aspect ratio options are ‘stretch to fit’ or ‘stretch to fill’.
How do I change the aspect ratio?
[Moved from: Windows / Windows 10 / Devices & drivers]
Changing the aspect ratio can be done from your graphics card control panel or from your monitor’s own control.
Go to your graphics card control panel by right-clicking on your computer screen and selecting the graphics settings (example: Intel Graphics Settings).
You can also contact the device manufacturer for assistance with changing the aspect ratio of your computer.
Update us with the outcome so we can provide further assistance.

Aspect Ratio (Windows10)
Replies (9)
Right click your Desktop, Choose Display Settings
Make sure resolution is set to the one marked Recommended
Make sure Scale is set to 100%
Close the Settings App
Right click your Desktop, from there open the Video card control panel
Locate the Aspect ration settings and make sure that is set to Automatic . ..
If the above does not resolve this:
What is the graphics card/chip on your PC — Device Manager — Display Adapters
What is the Make and Model of your Monitor (if a PC with separate monitor) or if that is a laptop the Make and exact Model of your laptop . . .

Hi Neil. I’m Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP here to help you.
1) Update the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker’s Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag — from the sticker on the PC.
While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS, network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.
if this doesn’t give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/.
or the Nvidia Update utility here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e.
or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P.
For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.
You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.
Then you will know you’ve tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.
2) Then adjust the Screen Resolution until satisfactory.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. If you’ll wait to rate whether my post helped you, I will keep working with you until it’s resolved.

Windows 10 Graphics Rendering Aspect Ratio Issues
Just updated from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I have noticed that games no longer stretch out to fill the entire screen and there are 2 black bars on both sides. This appears to be an issue between Intel, Nvidia, and Windows. In order to find a solutions I will explain what I have already done and the specs of the laptop.
B. Graphics — Intel HD 4000 and Nvidia Optimus GT 630M (Driver version for Intel 10.18.10.4242, Driver version for Nvidia 10.18.13.5362)
C. Windows 10 64 bit
D. Intel Core i7 -3630QM 2.4 Ghz
The recommended display for Windows is 1366 x 768. It is widescreen and before upgrading to Windows 10 games would fill the entire screen and get stretched, which is what I prefer. I have googled the issue and came up with no lasting positive results.
Here are the proposed fixes which did not work
A. Update the drivers — I went to device manager to the graphics and tried to let windows search for the right driver since win 10 is new. No new updates.
B. Searched on Intel website — They recommended letting Windows update do the updating and the Iris beta driver it mentioned, the download link would go back the microsoft windows update.
C. Tinker with display settings in Nvidia control panel and Graphic Properties control panel for intel. Stretch aspect is no longer listed as an option and won’t allow for custom resolution.
D. Let Geforce experience software update the nvidia driver. Appears Nvidia driver already up to date.
E. Tinker with Run in Compatible mode for specific games such as run compatible in Windows XP. Did not make a difference, still black bars on side.
F. Set a lower resolution for Windows 1024 x 768 for Windows. Some games run stretched then but windows looks more blurry and distorted now. I would have to switch back and forth everytime I want to play an older game to a smaller resolution. Very very inconvenient.
G. Disabled Display Scaling on each game. Did not make a difference.
I concluded that the drivers are still in beta mode of whatever Windows 10 downloaded and uses for display adapters. Drivers need updating to allow older games with lower resolution to stretch and fill the screen, or Windows needs to recognize to allow screen to stretch for games. A permanent fix would be nice to get rid of the black bars. I did not have this problem for Windows 8.1 on this computer so it is related to Windows in some form.
Windows 10 Full Screen Aspect Ratio 4:3 problem
Hello there Windows 10 users,
I’ve recently updated to Windows 10 Pro, from Windows 8.1 Pro, since i’ve updated i’ve had problems playing games in fullscreen on a 4:3 aspect ratio.
I’ve noticed something strange, if i change to a lower resolution on desktop and than go into IntelHD 4000 and select «Scale Full Screen» it works perfect, i mean it stretches the resolution to the whole screen, but only on desktop, if i enter a game it will have blackbars on the sides.
But here’s the odd thing, if i enter a game, let’s say for example CS:GO or Dota2, and i have ingame aspect ration 4:3, my game will have blackbars on each side of the monitor, even if i have «Scale Full Screen» selected in IntelHD 4000.
And another odd thing is that if i am ingame and press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, the desktop takes the 4:3 aspect ratio of the game with blackbars on the side.
What can i do? Please give me a solution to this annoying bug.

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. I understand the inconvenience you are facing. I will certainly help you with this.
This issue might happen due to not updated Display drivers. I suggest you to follow the below given methods.
Method 1:
You may update the Display driver from Device Manager manually and check if this helps.
- Press (Windows key + X) and click on “Device Manager”.
- Expand “Display Adaptor”.
- Right click on the video driver and select “Update Driver Software”. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.
Method 2:
If there no updated drivers available on the computer manufacturer’s website, then try installing it in compatibility mode. Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows. Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps.
- Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.
- Right-click on the driver setup file and click on ‘Properties’.
- Click on the ‘Compatibility’ tab and check the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 8/8.1 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.
Hope this information helps. Post back with updated issue details for further help.

I am running a laptop and using my television screen. I have no options to change the aspect ratio to what I need. When I search for or update drivers, I get no results. Everything was fine before the update.
Can’t scale aspect ratio to fit screen on Windows 10
Before the upgrade to Windows 10 (I had Windows 8), I was able to stretch the screen when I changed my aspect ratio to something like 4:3 rather than the usual 16:9. I had to manually go and change this in my Graphics Properties, but now nothing seems to work.
http://prntscr.com/7ykig4 That’s a screenshot of system specs. I also have Intel Graphics.

Select Display Settings
Select «Display» Pane, at the very bottom of pane, locate, «Advanced display settings», click.
At bottom of window, locate, «Display adapter properties.» Click on that.
Properties window opens, select the, «Intel(R) Graphic and Media Control Panel» tab n
**note= odd the largest tab in window.
It should open with the «Intel»logo.
Look for»Horizontal» and «Vertical» adjust bars.
Those bars will manually move the aspect ratio to fit the monitor of TV of choice.

That’s as far as I got, and to no surprise, there wasn’t any tab that helped. The ‘scaling’ tab looked promising, but as of now the only option for me is ‘maintain display settings’ due to my setup. :/
Edit: I just changed my resolution to 800×600 on my computer and was able to stretch out my screen to fit appropriately. Even though this shouldn’t really be a permanent fix, it works for now!

Hey. I had the same problem. After doing online research (for 2 days), here’s what worked for me.
[Step 1] Uninstall all display drivers using this utility provided by wagnardsoft «DDU (display driver uninstaller)»
[Step 2] Manually download (do not use auto detect) AMD/Nvidia display driver from thier website and install. Done!

Go to Control Panel (Windows + X keys together and Open Control panel from that menu)
Open Device Manager, then click to expand the Display Driver Entry, does it say Intel HD Graphics or Microsoft Basic Display
If it says Intel HD Graphics, what version does it say?
If it says Intel HD Graphics, right click your desktop, choose Display Settings, then Advanced Display Settings
Under resolution, is your resolution set to the one marked (Recommended), if it is not then it should be . . .
If it says Microsoft Basic Display Driver, you do not have the correct driver loaded and you will have to download it from the Intel Website
Once the correct display driver is loaded, your resolution is then set according to the display capability.
So for Instance if you have a 15.6″ laptop, max resolution is normally 1366 X 768 and if you have a 17.3″ laptop max resolution will normally be 1920 X 1080, all using the same display driver . . .
