Aspire 5600U — upgraded to Windows 10 and now no WIFI drivers. Can anyone help.

Ok — I’ve contacted Microsoft and now Acer. No help. Basically, I upgraded to Windows 10 and my WIFI completely disapeared. When I go to Device Management and Network Adapters I have to select Show Hidden to see the 3 drivers that I’m guessing need to be working properly. They are all gray-ed out; when I try to update them it says that I have the correct drivers installed. Microsoft claims that Acer hasn’t updated these drivers for Windows 10 compatibilty. The Acer rep pretty much said the same — that my machine was not compatible with Windows 10. Are they freaking kidding. Is there anyway around this?? Any third party drivers or ways to make them work? Is anyone running this same machine (Aspire 5600U) on Windows 10 with WIFI working?

FAQ & Answers

can you please report the wifi adapter model listed on device manager?

Hi — thanks for reply,

Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 Wireless Network Adapter

There’s also two others grayed-out:

Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter

Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter #2

Not sure what those are — guessing the above Qualcomm is most critical? At any rate — those are the three that I see if I select to show Hidden Files; all three are grayed-out.

download this driver, clicking on telecharger:

double click the downloaded file to extract the files, then run the install/setup .exe file.

reboot and check if the wifi is available.

No luck.

Downloaded, extracted, ran executable and installed. It detected a previous version so the first time I just chose to update. No changes after a reboot so I ran the executable again and this time chose to completely uninstall the previous version first. Still nothing after a reboot. When I go back into Device Manager and Network Adapaters the same three are still grayed-out.

I have an Aspire 5600U and upgraded to Windows 10 now my Wifi settings are gone.

I was on with Microsoft all last night and they think its on the hardware but i cant find a switch.

Can someone please help? Wifi is not listed under Network Connections at all anymore and i cant figure out how to turn it on.

is the wifi toggle button available on Action centre?

Can you check if it’s listed under network adapter on Device manager?

when i do that there are 2 listed as Microsoft Wifi and when i go into properties it says the device is not connected to the computer and that the best driver is being used for each. I think this is a hardware switch or key stroke to turn on the wifi which somehow got turned off. it is really frustrating that you cant get a comprehensive manual online or with the original computer.

can you take a screenshot of this 2 WiFi devices?

According to the User Manual there should be a WiFi toggle slide switch on the front edge, just left of the right speaker.

what manual? Where can i find that?

I dont know what you mean by front edge or thr right speaker?

The manual is on the Acer support site, in the Drivers and Manuals section. You can find it by entering your serial number, product name or as I did by choosing the 5600 from a list of Aspire notebooks. Once there choose the Documents tab.

The front edge is the area below the keyboard at the front of your laptop, the speakers have grills in front of them on the right and left sides of the front edge.

I am having the same issue with my Acer 5600u Desktop. The problem is that Acer does not have an updated driver for Windows 10 so during the update it was removed. My original upgrade to 10 allowed the driver to stay, but with the update this morning, it was gone. I tried to download the driver that Acer has and it only has a driver for 8.1 and that does not work. Is anyone having any luck fixing this problem? I have spent the evening on the phone with Microsoft and it hasn’t gotten anywhere.
