Asus H310M-E motherboard and Linux

I’ve been using Linux for 22 years, and wanted to put it on my new computer with 8 gen i7, nvidia Geforce GT 710 16mb 2666 DDR4 ram Asus H310M-E R2.0 motherboard. While described as a Gaming machine it has no fans apart from the CPU and normally is very quiet while able to handle some of the large graphics and video files I process.

After disabling quick boot in the bios (version 1007), with the latest Linux Mint live DVD I got PCIe Bus Error: severity=Corrected, type=Physical Layer . scrolling down the screen at high speed. It eventually booted but with errors on the display such as you might see on your TV with a bad signal. Small errors.

I wasn’t keen on this and tried Manjaro Linux which booted up with no errors but it would freeze the mouse and become unresponsive after a few minutes. Meantime the CPU fan was in overdrive. I installed Manjaro with EFI partition for the UEFI bias and it would run for ten or fifteen minutes again with the CPU going into overdrive before freezing and if I checked the BIOS it was about 45 degrees instead of the usual 29 it runs at with very little CPU fan in windows, fan set to quiet.

However I didn’t overclock, the RAM I have is 2666 max speed for the motherboard, and I couldn’t find XMP in the BIOS Ai settings so this could be a red herring.

Last month I bought this machine, but originally got the 320 motherboard with AMD however that wouldn’t get past setting Windows up for 2 or 3 minutes without the same phenomenon of lots of fan noise and unresponsive mouse and screen. The shop was going to replace it but I opted for the intel machine and paid a little extra.

Today I found a link to Linux Status Report for ASUS https://dlcdnimgs.asus.com/websites/. ort-201810.pdf Which showed variants of my motherboard working with Fedora and Ubuntu , it had the H310M-D R2.0 not the H310M-E R2.0but I thought it was close enough. I had tried Ubuntu 20.04 on the desktop and it didn’t work whereas it had worked on my ACER Nitro 5 laptop.

So I tried Fedora workstation on USB and it booted up without errors and worked for about 15 minutes or so and I was able to shut it down properly instead of having a mouse freeze. The only thing was it had the CPU fan very noisy the whole time as with Manjaro and it was about 45 when I got back into the BIOS, not that this is hot but I wasn’t doing much that required CPU. Also when shutting down it did have the PCIe Bus error scrolling very fast for a few seconds, as best as I could read it.

I’m generally very happy with this machine but I would like to have Linux on it as well as Windows. However I don’t like having the system freeze up while using Linux and I think there is something wrong with it running hot, hasn’t happened on other machines as I recall it. I ran top which gives system information on linux and attached screenshot. I’d like to install Fedora but not so sure about the CPU issue.

Where to find and install ASUS motherboard drivers for Linux [duplicate]

This is my second day ever with Linux, and I had one heck of a time getting the nVidia drivers installed and working. Please, keep in mind I am very new and just starting out.

I currently have an ASUS P8Z68-V LE motherboard and I’m not sure if the drivers are installed. Where would I go to find that out? I am using Gnome as my UI. If I don’t have the drivers installed, where would I go?

The ASUS site only gives me options to download for various Windows OS, DOS and «other» (in .ROM format).

Which should I take and how should I install? I’m mostly looking for audio drivers. A lot of music I play, either on YouTube or with VLC has a faint crackling in the background on Ubuntu, which gets much worse the higher I turn the volume up. Could this be something other than the drivers?

I doubt it’s the hardware since the sound seems fine on Windows. I am currently running 12.04.

There aren’t generally any special motherboard chipset drivers that you need to install separately on Linux, like you need to do on Windows. The drivers are part of the Linux kernel. The hardware is detected at boot time and the correct drivers are loaded.

There are however cases where one might acquire hardware that is newer than the version of the kernel in the Linux distribution you choose to install; or even do not yet have any or full functionality in the upstream kernel.

In these cases though, you usually have to just wait or suffer, until the better drivers are available, as manufacturers typically don’t offer additional drivers for Linux for these types of hardware. This is rarely an issue for motherboards though, as most of them use standard chipsets across the board, so are often covered by the drivers already available in the kernel.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team are also pretty good about ensuring that newer drivers are backported into the current development version of Ubuntu, to ensure a broader range of compatibility for users.

The below is not and MX problem. It is a kernel thing.
But one thing I have had trouble with is sensor modules on my new Asus b450-I motherboard running AMD 5 3600. But I have found the fix. If the below is not done No CPU or Fan sensors will work. For me anyway

One other thing on bootup I see that watchdog is disabled in the bios. Is this not good. ?

I also did a catfish on the systems folder for it87

This all I could find in config-5.4.0-3-amd64 (9296 lines of code) using search of course.

From what i see here the driver is not loaded. But the sensors part is fixed. But helpfully this can but fixed. I don’t understand myself we need more help with this.. Sorry bedtime work tomorrow.

mx19+1 (2020-02-14) x86_64 GNU/Linux.. On MX-19.1 AHS + Nvidia 440.59

The GPIO driver is now installed.
From : /boot/config-5.5.0-3.2-liquorix-amd64

I installed these first Linux ASUS WMI Sensor driver from here: https://github.com/electrified/asus-wmi-sensors You could try just installing Liquorix first and see if all works. If all works good, if not then install these.. Asus is the key here.

The below seems a bit to old 4 years but I could be wrong too. They could be the same as above I just don’t know.

Выбор материнской платы для работы c linux

Короче, мне интерестно на каких современных материнских платах будет корректно работать linux без дополнительных плясок с бубном.
Материнка: ASRock N68-GS4 FX
Всё бы нечего но, вот тема на одном форуме у пользователя есть проблема со встроенным сетевым чипом (Qualcomm Atheros AR8171).
Вот другая материнка: MSI A68HM-E33 V2
Сеть в ней вроде: Realtek ALC8111G Но не знаю, поддерживает этот чипсет linux и эта материнская плата его в целом.
Также на этой плате и не тех, о которых я делал последнее темы обладают UEFI BIOS где может быть Secure Boot. Соответственно, на них linux не получится даже запустить, так как для того чтобы отключить secure boot, потребуется лезть в прошивку bios, что несомненно приведёт к потере гарантии на материнскую плату.
Использование windows на мощном компе мне не нужно. По этому, я бы хотел узнать, какие современные материнские платы нормально работают в linux, а желательно ещё и в FreeBSD.

У меня сейчас вот система на такой работает. Ставишь в настройках «Non-Windows OS» и используешь.

Новые i3 этот хлам уделывают, скоро наверное пни и селероны тоже будут уделывать.

В подавляющем большинстве случаев всё прекрасно работает. На крайний случай Secure Boot в декстопных материнках вроде отключается без проблем обычно.

А если производитель запретит отключать secure boot

На днях там дырку нашли у мысы, что аж на арм можно вкорячивать что угодно.

Search for the hardinfo package in the Software Center or run sudo apt-get install hardinfo from the command line. The motherboard make and model can be found on the Devices > DMI page.

Non-root user variant

I would like to suggest a variant for the unprivileged users, since it’s not always possible to execute commands as root (some users simply cannot and however it is always a good practice to avoid running commands as root when it’s not needed) and or there is no intention or possibility to install new programs:

that it is a short version, shell expanded, of cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/board_vendor /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/board_name /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/board_version and gives as a spartan output respectively vendor, name and version:

Inside the path /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/ it’s possible to find some files with information about BIOS, board (motherboard), chassis. not all are readable by an unprivileged user due to a security or privacy concerns.

Privileged user variant

Of course, e.g, a sudo cat board_serial (that usually is readable only by root, -r——— ) or a sudo cat board_* can easily overcame this limit.

. but, maybe, if privileges are available it’s more convenient to use dmidecode as suggested in other answers as well.

Below is the version I prefer, due to the compactness of its output:

The previous command with -A3 will show only the first 3 lines and it is the short version for
sudo dmidecode | grep -A4 ‘^Base Board Information’ that should be better to use if in a script.

(1) if it is protected for unprivileged users, then maybe it’s better to avoid posting it 🙂

Ps> The following works fine too sudo lshw | grep -A5 «Mot» (again «Mot» is the short for «Motherboard» and only «Mo» will not filter words as Model or Mobile. ), but I find it a little lazier than dmidecode to answer with its output (lshw 0.906s vs dmidecode 0.024s).
