Welcome
Asus-Linux.org is an independent community effort that works to improve Linux support for Asus notebooks.
Many but not all ASUS ROG laptops work under Linux quite well. But there are always new models coming out, or older models that got missed. This project aims to solve all the issues you may have, and enable many ROG specific features.
Sound issues are the most common problem , and solving these requires a little more effort and patience — see the blog post about this plus visit the discord for guidance. Do note that the root problem is almost never pulse audio or pipewire — it’s the Realtek codec chip needing specific fixes in the kernel driver.
The second most common issue is that of device feature enablement such as:
- AniMe Matrix display
- RGB keyboard LEDs
- fn+key combos and media controls
- G-Sync enable on capable laptops
- Re-enable the dGPU after setting «iGPU On» in Windows
- and more All of the above is either enabled in asusctl already, or is enabled via patches to the kernel (and we provide pre-built kernels with the patches applied) which are steadily upstreamed.
Extra features we currently support are:
- Control graphics modes without reboots for switching between iGPU, dGPU, on-demand, and vfio (for VM pass-through)
- Set battery charge limit
- Fan curve control

I really love windows and well its my main operating system. Since I am a IT student as well as a gamer I got this for both worlds. I would
like to have linux and be able to utilize the full power of the rog laptop i bought (which im very happy i did it rocks). I am enjoying it and
those who are having problems read the forums and your problems will be addressed or you will be helped. Most gamers know the in’s and outs of the computers/laptops very well.

Assuming you’re looking for a Linux ATK driver, as your thread title suggests, there aren’t any. This is a common complaint with Asus laptops, which are designed as Windows platforms. Many owners are able to make do, though, as you don’t lose that much functionality without the ATK package.

I’ve been using Debian 6.0.3 Squeeze (Stable) on my G74 since I got it last October. Its really great with Linux: in fact I get 200MHz more out of my CPU with Linux (for some reason Windows’ implementation of ACPI constrains turbo on the G74’s core i7 2630QM to a max of 2.7GHz, whereas the chip is supposed to do 2.9. this is a known issue with the G74 and a common fault pointed out in some reviews, eg. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-. k.56809.0.html). With Linux I get a full 2.92 GHz from Turbo on my i7 2630. Using the CPU to it fullest speed potential in my mind is a decent trade-off for no control of the keyboard backlight, volume and screen brightness, and touchpad disable/enable via hotkeys (ATK): seriously, thats all I’m missing by not using windows. I can control screen on/off, wifi enable/disable via the key combos in linux. Also in Linux you will not experience the common well documented problems of the G74 that we on his forum help people troubleshoot (e.g. annoying keyboard lockup when you disable touchpad in BIOS, crazy sensitivity of touchpad, throttling of CPU when at full load, buggy 3rd party drivers, etc). As well linux addresses all 32GB of RAM I’ve stuffed into My G74, whereas windows home premium that came with the G74 is purposefully gimped not to.
First thing you should do is get a 3.X kernel with your distro: don’t use the (quite) old 2.6.32 stable kernels floating around. If you’ve ever compiled your own kernel, there are some ASUS specific device drivers in the kernel options that you can turn on in the compile that allow the asus hotkey combos to control the above things you’re missing by not using ATK, though I’ve never tried them specifically: I’m quite happy with the stock 3.0.0.3 kernel image.
NVIDIA also supports linux with the latest drivers for the GTX560M: grab ’em from here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html In fact this is the only 3rd party driver I use. everything else runs 100% fine with the device drivers in the kernel controlling them.
I use grub to control my G74 in a dual-boot config: windows 7 is on its own little isolated partition, where I can use excel (my favorite tool for research), game a bit, and let my wife store and watch her movies and pics. I’m going to turf this partition and switch over to 100% linux and run windows in a VM when things at work quiet down a little.

Linux support for ASUS ROG laptops is coming along nicely
Back in April we revealed the ROG-Core project, with an aim to better support ASUS ROG laptops on Linux and it seems it’s really coming along nicely now.
This special ‘Republic Of Gamers’ brand of ASUS laptops (available here) comes with a bunch of flashy features, most of which are only directly supported on Windows. Frustrating for Linux buyers of course but great to see a community project spring up to allow Linux users to fully appreciate their kit.
While it started off initially focusing on the Zephyrus GX502GW, which the author of the project owned, it’s now progressed onto supporting quite a lot of models including: GM501, GX502, GX531, G512, G712, G531, G532 and more like GA14/GA401 depending on kernel patches. Impressive progress for something so new. It also shows how hardware vendors could and should be doing it if a few people hacking away in their free time can do it so well.
So what can it do? Quite a lot now. Per-key LED settings, fancy LED modes, modifying built-in LED modes, a Daemon mode, various system control options like screen brightness and Touchpad toggle, hotkeys for things like media controls and more.
It’s gained a bit of a following now too, and has spawned another project with ZephyrusBling which builds upon ROG-Core to allow owners of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 with the AniMe Matrix LED display on the back to do things like this:
While I have no need of it, I suddenly feel like I need it. How could you not love that though? Brilliant bit of useless flashy tech for the super nerd to show off a bit.

ASUS g752vm dual boot ubuntu installation.
I would like to install ubuntu alonside windows on the NVMe ssd of my asus g752vm.
When I bought the laptop I managed (after quite some hardship) to perform a clean install following similar steps to these (basicacally you need to install the ssd drivers so windows can find it).
However, when I try to do this with ubuntu I cannot manage to make the installer to find the hard drive.
Reading the forums it seems the solution is setting the SATA to AHCI. Once I do this, however, windows is no longer able to run and it asks for a repair.
I do not mind reinstalling windows, and then installing ubuntu on a partition, however, I am not sure if this will work.
Could anyone please link me to the right steps?
Hi, the latest BIOS for your ASUS G752VM is version 306 — 2017/08/01 — probably it is the first thing you should do.
Currently I have only Solus (for me much better and faster then Ubuntu) installed in my ASUS G752VS. during the last year I installed few times Ubuntu alongside Windows without any problem:
1)
erase completely your hard drive, reset BIOS defaults,
set SATA to AHCI, disable legacy boot mode, disable fast boot and secure boot (probably you need to delete all secure boot keys), make GPT partition table, create one NTFS partition (size 50% of hard drive) and install Windows in UEFI mode, fully update your Windows;
2)
reset BIOS defaults,
set SATA to AHCI, disable legacy boot mode, disable fast boot and secure boot (probably you need to delete all secure boot keys), manually create partitions or install Ubuntu automatically in UEFI mode alongside Windows;
3)
inside BIOS change boot order and set Ubuntu as a primary OS.

Thank you very much for your reply. I followed your steps and I managed to do a dual installation!
I have had just these issues:
1) I noticed after I installed the Intel Rapid Storage driver that sometimes (1 in every 5) the computer would freeze in the ROG logo. Not a big issue just by clicking the turn on/off it turns off.
2) After Grub menu the ubuntu loads fast but in the case of windows it takes a long time. The logo window in blue appears (twice) I had only seen that one during the os installations.
3) I noticed the computer getting hotter in ubuntu. Do you use program for managing the fans? I use notebook fancontrol in windows but the installation in linux seems hard.
Not big issues but I wonder if you had any more advice. Thanks again!!
