Thank you. It is useful
All looks good. A few things could be considered to improve.
1) — The dashboard NOT showing the target disk drive, so you never know what are you testing
2) — Choose the target drive need to be easy option directly on a dashboard, not thru the setting
3) — The RED button color is not obvious indication the test is going. You have to change note inside the button from start test to test is continuously on or something appropriate
Once again, thank you for your software
Fix for crash on launch.
1. Open Finder.
2. Go to Applications folder.
3. Right click on Blackmagic Disk Speed Test and click Show Package Contents
4. Open Contents folder and then MacOS folder.
5. Open the DiskSpeedTest inside.
A Great, Quick Benchmark
BlackMagic is the best and quickest way to verify data transfer speeds. Is that new external NVMe Thunderbolt 3 REALLY Thunderbolt 3? Well, in my case it wasn’t. It was simply USB 3.x. Thank you, BlackMagic, I can confidently return this drive to Amazon. 🙂

Almost Perfect, Great Price
Disk Speed Test is a very useful product and one cannot complain about the price point.
However, a few enhancements would make this program truly wonderful.
Ability to Specify Number of Runs
Instead of just running forever, it would be nice to be able to specify that Disk Speed Test is to run some user specified number of times.
Ability to specify the pause period between runs
At the default values, it is hard to stop the program after it has totally finished one test, and before it has started another. It would be nice to be able to specify a pause between runs.
Log File
It would be nice if Disk Speed Test had an option to save a log file with the test results for each run. Something that one could import into Excel or some other spreadsheet would be idea.
Command Line Run
The ability to run Disk Speed Test from the command line would allow for automation. And also for remote collection of such data by admins, who could use this feature with ARD or other secure command line login.
Blackmagic is now faster enough to rate internal SSD speeds, even the Startup Disk
Blackmagic has been updated to adequately report the speed of SSD devices.
When Blackmagic tries to read the Startup Disk, you get the message that the device is not writeable, hence you cannot rate the the transfer rates of the drive.
I found a workaround that will report the rates of the Startup Disk. Its quite simple. Create a disk image (.dmg) using the disk utility specifying file->new image->blank image. Make it big enough for Blackmagic to work with (7+ GB) and name it what you will. Mount the volume (if it is not already mounted).
In Blackmagic select the disk image mounted. Since the “volume” is on your Startup Disk, you will see how fast it drive is. On my 2016 MacBook Pro, I am seeing speeds like 1,000+ MB/s write, and 1100+ MB/S read. I have tried this on my older mackbooks with SSD and they do scale down as the device is older. On an older MacBook Pro the rates I see are 500 MB/S both read and write, as you would expect.
I have run Blackmagic on USB 2, thumb drives, USB 3, and USB C devices to see if I’m getting my money’s worth. You can easily detect when a device is performing subpar and, and with the spinning disk, you can see is transfer speeds deteriorates over time.
Nice FREE Utility
I use this often and appreciate it. The update (3.1) seems to provide much more stable speed readings than the 2.x version I’ve been using (where the guage is all over the map). One issue I have is that it seems to have issues with NTFS formatted drives. I’m using Paragon’s NTFS for Mac, and BMDST writes to it well (430 to my SSD) but on the read test it often (though not always) fails with «Error reading the test file». Aside from this niche case it’s an awesome tool.

Blackmagic disk speed test
This app is so damn good. I just tested it out and bam i got the the thing done.
I think everyone should download this app
Where’s the non-sequential speed test?
It’s a good free tool to measure sequential read and write.
But more importantly, where is the 4k random read and write speed?
Not Accurate & Significant Performance Drop
I’ve installed OCZ Vertex 3 120GB a week ago, the reason i use this tool is to monitor the speed degradation (based on my original benchmark), so then I can do a SSD recondition after some times. It’s a very dissapointing experience when this tool shows my SSD performance drop from 470MB/s to 150MB/s (Write) after I have this software update. Now the benchmark value’s changed and I even can’t go back to old version, so I just uninstalled it. 🙁

Crashes from App Store, Runs from Launchpad
The ‘crash on startup’ bug that others are reporting seems to be limited to launching from within the App Store screen. If you click the ‘Open’ button from the App Store window after downloading then the App crashes instantly without any warning or eror message. If you close the App Store window, open Launchpad, and run it from there, it seems to run fine.
Works fine with High Sierra
Was uncertain about using this given some of other reviews suggesting problem using this with High Sierra. But I installed it on a 2016 MacBook Pro and a 2013 Mac Pro both running High Sierra and the software imnstalled and ran fine on both. Gives easy and clear results. Very helpful when running a range of drives connected to both Macs.
Reports incorrect speeds on M1 Thunderbolt 3 external SSD
When I first got my M1 MacBook Pro the software reported my external Thunderbolt 3 SSD speed correctly. After the update to 3.3 it now only reports the write speed as 1300 MB/s instead of the previous 2300 MB/s. At first, I thought the drive was faulty but I tested on my i5 MacBook Pro using version 3.3 and got 2300 MB/s. Finally, I actually copied 100GB of data onto the external drive (Thunderbolt 3 4x PCIe with WD_Black 750) and the speed was slightly faster on the M1. The conclusion is that the software does not accurately report write speeds on external drives on the M1 Macs.

Excellent app, but could be better for power users
It is fast, easy and clean, and there are terminal commands to use, but I would like to see a terminal option added to select target disk. Otherwise, decent
Essential App for every Mac!
Brilliant and essential app. Have been using it for many years now and it’s always brilliant to stress test your Mac Flash Drive every now and then to see if there is a speed drop over time or to see if FileVault slows it down. In my case, Read and Write speeds have increased with File Vault.
A new version is needed though for High Sierra and the new File System plus the super speed Flash Drives recently released.
OK but confusing
Big plus is it is free, this is a great tool thank you.
Confusing at first because it seems to keep going, is not immediately apparent that you can stop it any time.
