Installing BMW Scanner 1.4.0 on Windows 10

I keep seeing people requesting information on how to install BMW Scanner 1.4.0 on Windows 10. Here are the notes I took whilst I installed the software on Windows 10 Professional. The software installation was done on a fresh install of Windows 10 Professional. I first copied the scanner software from the CD to a folder on my desktop.

These instructions should also work for Windows 7 but I have not tried them on this Operating System.

Disclaimer: This procedure worked for my installation. It is not guaranteed to work for all laptops and all versions of Windows.

1. Double-click on the set up program in the software folder.

2. When asked if you want to allow this software from an unknown publisher to update the computer. click the Yes button. The installation will start.

3. Take all the default options for the installation. If asked if you want to overwrite and files, click on Overwrite All. When prompted, take the option to install a shortcut on the desktop, and to auto-run the application after installation.

When the application starts you will see that the drivers are not installed.

4. Now we need to install the drivers.
Go to the install folder on the c:\ drive.
Go in to BMWScan140.
Go in to Drivers.
Select the file FTD2XX.inf (the one that says setup information) and right-click the mouse to bring up the context menu.
Press Install.

When asked if you want to allow the program to modify the computer. Press Yes. The drivers will start to install.

During the installation you will be notified that the system cannot verify the publisher.

Press on Install this driver software anyway
5. The drivers are installed and the software now shows the drivers installed when you run it

6. Plug the laptop in to the car and start the software. The software should connect to the car and allow you to scan and update the system.

The items noted below I did not need to do for my installation of Windows 10 Professional but are included to give you some pointers for troubleshooting.

  • On a previous installation of Windows 10 I needed to find a registry hack to allow uncertified drivers to be installed. This was a while ago so I don’t have the link. Try searching for “how to install drivers from an unknown publisher”. (always take care when editing the registry)
  • On 64-bit installations you may find you need to install the 64-bit drivers. The drivers are available in the install folder where you run the initial setup program from.

Go in to the 64 bit drivers folder, locate the Setup Information files, right-click on these and choose the Install option from the menu.

  • You may also find you need to change the configuration for the COM serial port. You can do this in Device Manager, look for the serial port driver and use the configure options. You can change the assigned COM port and other things like the latency. NOTE: You won’t see the serial port in Device Manager unless the laptop is plugged in to the car.
  • I hope that this post helps you to get the software working. Please do let me know if this gets you going. If you have issues, try Googling (that’s what I do) or you can post a comment and I will try and help. I can’t give any guarantees to be able to get things working for you but can sometimes help to communicate

My laptop updated to the latest feature version of Windows today and after this update BMW Scanner could no longer see the serial port to communicate with the car. It would just say Hardware not ready. A quick look in Device Manager in Windows and it said that the driver for the BMW Scanner was not loaded. I went back to load the drivers as per the above instructions but they would not install. Windows gave an error about there not being a signature on the drivers and so would not install them. A quick Google of the issue and I found the following link.

I used the notes on GUI to Disable Digital Signature Checking. After disabling the check for the digital signature it now allowed the drivers to be installed. I had to reboot the laptop after the install of the drivers before they would work.

    Great post mate!
It seems to be very easy to install.
I just need to get the 64 bits drivers and the software.
Do you know how can i get it?
    Thank you very much!
    Regards from spain

Hi, sorry for the delay in responding. You can get the software, and the cable, from eBay. Do a search for BMW Scanner 1.4.0 and you should find plenty of ones to choose from.

I don’t give a poo for win10. Installed on my old Dell laptop, running win xp, runs like a charm.
(Beside this, not too easy to carry a 17″ Alienware to the car)

When doing step 4, i get an error stating “the third-party INF does not contain digital signature information”

    Всем привет.
Вот решил создать тему по установке сканера на 10 винду, а то у многих она чего-то не пашет.

    Для этого нам понадобится:
    1) сам сканер;
    2) Установленная программа на компе.
    3) Драйвер для windows 10
    4) Чуть-чуть терпения

    Так
    1) Подключаем сканер и лезем в диспетчер устройств (надеюсь объяснять где его найти не надо);

    3) В появившемся окне выбираем «выполнить пойск на этом компьютере»;

    6) в появившемся окне идём в папку с драйверами (которые вы скачали по ссылке выше и распаковали на своём компе)

Getting PA Soft BMW Scanner 1.4.0 to work on Windows 10 64 bit

I’ve been trying to get this working for a long while now, and I’ve been needing to reset my oil light for almost as long. I have the BMW Scanner 1.4.0 OBD device along with a pac-man 21 pin adapter for my ’99 528i, and I cannot get the drivers installed correctly. Every time I open the program, it shows that the device isn’t connected, but the driver are installed. On Device Manager, it still shows the exclamation mark next to the BMW Scanner device as if there is a problem.
I’ve tried the FTDI drivers and the drivers that came on the disk, and Windows just tells me it cannot install the drivers, whether it’s plugged in to the car or not.
I have tried the method I read on another thread here about deactivating driver signature verification, and that made no difference. Does anyone know what I can do to get this working? I’d really like to use this software.

Try the instructions in the 7th post here: http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh. n-Win-7-64-bit
Windows 10 should be very similar. I had to desolder some shorted pins in my adapter before it would work.

Yeah, that’s what I had done, and it still won’t work. I can’t figure out why.

I’ve gotten it to work on Win8.1 64-bit, but never tried on Win10. One of the many reasons I don’t use Win10.

I would try old FTDI drivers to get a connection to the FTDI chip. Then read the FTDI chip eeprom with MProg to make sure the new Win10 drivers didn’t erase the device ID. The new FTDI drivers tend to do that to certain clone chips. One of the reasons why the white board K+DCAN cables fail so often. Easy to reflash back though.
I have successfully revived non working white board K+DCAN cables using this method.

I’ll have to double check all that. I need to see what I can do with it this week.

Desolder? The only thing that happened multiple Times with interfaces (BMW Scanner or k+dcan) is that the shortcut between pin 7&8 was missing. Those Selters have no idea what they are selling and in the «Support» they are pretending to have «engineers» to solve the problems. Nur the only thing they recommend is to try Windows XP, 7 or 8 which always Leads to the Same issue. You Will Not be able to access any module besides DME (maybe also DDE) as Long as Pin 7&8 are Not soldered together.
I know that some newer E Models do Not need (meaning they Must be separated) those pins bridged. But afaik all models which are covered by bmw Scanner 1.4.0 Need this. Any other opinions/experiences?

The Installation guide you refered to worked for me with all x64 machines Running Windows 7 and above except one machine. No idea what the matter was there.

First off sorry about the delay, this stuff just frustrates me so I can’t focus on it too long! Anyway.
I’ve determined that after uninstalling the device, unplugging the adapter, and plugging the adapter back in, the drivers are not installing at all, even though the BMW Scanner software says that they are installed. I think the software is just seeing that the drivers are on my computer, but I cannot install them on the «BMW Scanner V14x» device. Does anyone know what drivers will be able to install on the BMW scanner adapter on Windows 10? Every time I try to install the drivers it just tells me that they won’t work on that device.

Got it working! I followed the directions closely from this post and I got connected finally! Thanks guys!
