Question: Q: Latest Brother Control Center and Catalina — Brother not supporting Apple OS
Maybe you saw this original post form March on this topic where the «helpful» response was one pointing you to the Brother site that suggested you search for the the Mac driver — all that gets you is the stone age v2 Mac Control Center — 1 32-bit incompatible application
So if you are unlucky enough to own a Brother Printer you are faced with a very poor choice
Don’t upgrade to Mojave
Find your Brother Printer/scanner functionality reduced
It seems pretty clear to me that the Brother strategy is to ignore Apple development and support and focus on Windows. The control center is now in v4 for windows but remained at v2 for Mac for the past several years. V2 control center is a 32-bit application and we have been receiving warnings from Apple for an extended period of time
Brother appears to have chosen to ignore them and has little interest in updating its drivers and software for their printers for Apple Cataline OS an 64-bit.
Their response has remained the same for a long time — you can find it here. Try this «new» application in the apple store «iPrint&Scan». But if you are like me you will find the list of compatible printers short and neither of mine featured
Or use the Apple Image Capture Utility — in other words we can’t be bothered to support and write software for Mac users use the built in clunky tool that comes with Apple OS
I welcome being proved wrong but that’s my exploration and at this point my relationship with Brother is now limited to the duration these printers survive and the consumables are used up at which point they will be retired and replaced with another brand that is interested in supporting apple OS for their printers

Did you look on Brother’s U.S. site for software updates?

Hello, just had the same question. Called the support of Brother, this is the answer: «it is no longer possible to scan from the control panel of the scanner to the computer. The Brother software (ControlCenter) is unable to work on 64 bit.» (sic!) Moreover: «there is no intention from Brother to cure the problem»
Workaround: initiate scanning from Image Capture from your Mac.
Means that if you have to scan 10 documents, you have to walk 10 times from your workplace to the printer.
Never, never Brother again. Realy never.

Unfortunately, this is common for any printer manufacturer. The majority of models they sell are inexpensive. Often sold for less than they cost to build. They make up the initial loss on the sale of overpriced ink and toner.
Because they’re built and sold as essentially throw-away hardware, they don’t get much support time. They expect you to purchase a new model every 3 to 5 years. The only printers that get longer support are the much more expensive units. Read — printers aimed at businesses, who would scream very loudly if support was dropped in only a few years on a 2,000 to 5,000 dollar device.

OK, but a printer of 500€ (means about 600$) is not longer a cheap playtoy for children .
And the problem occurs after 5 months, so .
Oct 11, 2019 6:34 AM
Then complain to Brother.
They are responsible for providing drivers and software for their products.

macOS (and OS X before) have been 64-bit for over 13 years.
If Brother sold a product with 32-bit apps only 5 months ago, they are idiots.

I think you misspelled «lazy».
Oct 11, 2019 6:48 AM
Well, yes, their decision to be idiots could have derived from their laziness.
Oct 11, 2019 6:56 AM
Would Apple be able to provide details of how to do the image capture process on this forum?
ALSO Kurt above says they are «throw away» planned obsolescence, does that mean ALL new printers from Brother will be capable of working with the new OS? EVEN the «throw away’s»?
Oct 11, 2019 7:27 AM
All inexpensive printers from any manufacturer are considered by them to be throw away items with short support lifespans. I have to yet to see any printer under $500 (in particular) that gets more than 5 years of support.
As KiltedTim noted, if a printer purchased just months ago came supplied with only 32 bit software, then the manufacturer is indeed an idiot. Or incompetent. Or use whatever similar adjective you want.
The Mac OS started moving to 64 bit all the way back in the release of Snow Leopard, when the entire OS was rewritten as 64 bit with 32 bit application support. Mountain Lion dropped all support for 32 bit kernel extensions as it would only boot as a 64 bit OS. High Sierra and Mojave made it crystal clear to anyone paying even the slightest bit of attention that 32 bit software was on its last gasp by displaying the (admittedly, very cryptic) message that the software was «not optimized» for your system.
At this point, there is simply no excuse for releasing 32 bit only software for the Mac. Much worse when you’re told there will be no 64 bit software for a brand new model. That’s knowingly selling brand new, obsolete products.

Oct 19, 2019 1:42 AM
or you can just use image capture which is already installed on your mac on
Oct 19, 2019 1:51 AM
Preview supports your scanner and is free. and already in your mac.
Oct 19, 2019 2:24 AM
Wow, too easy with the Preview tip. I wish I found that years ago.

«Printing — the printer is not responding».
Updated my Mac with the latest Brother drivers (supposedly for 10.15 Catalina). Reboot. ‘Printing — the printer is not responding’
Simply will no longer recognize my wireless Brother MFC- J491 after upgrade to Catalina.

I found the Brother ScannerApp is helpful — works well with my MFC-J6910DW
Nov 2, 2019 6:09 AM
I’m facing the same issue with my Brother DCP J-105. The Brother website says to use Print & Scan, they claim my printer is supported. However when I open the Print & Scan app I got «Device Not Supported». I can’t use my favourite feature which was «Scan to file..» 🙁 What a crap.
Nov 3, 2019 9:37 AM
Just use Preview to scan. It works fine with my Brother drvice. I haven’t the Brother Control Center software installed for years.
Nov 3, 2019 9:56 AM
Is it the Brother Scanner App you’re using?
Nov 3, 2019 10:41 AM
Why would you think that software that supports 6600+ scanners, and kept current, should be free? I have owned VueScan Professional since 2012 when it was $79USD, and I have never paid an upgrade fee since.
Nov 3, 2019 11:11 AM
Hallo Luis, seems the problem has not been clearly explained to you.
I know of course the scanner can be used from your Mac. That is not the issue.
The issue is the following: Suppose you are in an office, and your printer is shared through the LAN with other users. The printer is located in a another room than the room of your desc. If you have, let us say, 25 documents to be scanned, you will have to go to the printer, insert your document in the scanner, return to your desc, have the document scanned to your Mac, return to the printer, insert your second document in the scanner, and again return to your Mac, and so again 25 times.
Normal would be (and was indeed!), that you could direct your 25 scans from the scanner to your Mac, staying at your scanner until all your documents are scanned. That was perfectly possible when I bought the printer 5 months ago. Brother knew for years that they should have adapted their software to meet Catalina. But they did’nt.
Laziness? Mac users are not important? Unable to adapt programs for Catalina? I don’t know. But I would never recommend Brother anymore.
If their sewing machines are as good as their software, I would be afraid to bear pants sticked by a Brother machine.

Use Control Centre on Mac
Control Centre on Mac gives you quick access to key macOS system settings — such as volume, brightness, Wi-Fi or Do Not Disturb. You can customise Control Centre to add other items, such as accessibility shortcuts or Fast User switching.
Use Control Centre
On your Mac, click Control Centre in the menu bar.
Drag a slider (such as the Volume slider) or click an icon (such as the AirDrop icon). To see more options, click anywhere in an item or click the arrow on the right.
For example, in Display, drag the slider to adjust the display brightness, or click anywhere in Display to show controls to turn Dark Mode and Night Shift on or off.
Tip: If you often use an item, you can drag it from Control Centre to the menu bar to keep it handy there. To remove the item from the menu bar, press and hold the Command key while you drag the item out of the menu bar.
Customise Control Centre
On your Mac, choose Apple menu
> System Preferences, then click Dock & Menu Bar.
Click a section in the sidebar to see items that are always in Control Centre or that you can add.
Control Centre: The items in this section are always shown in Control Centre; you can’t remove them. Select an item in the sidebar to see a preview of it in Control Centre on the right.
Other Modules: You can add the items in this section to Control Centre. Select an item in the sidebar, then select the item’s Show in Control Centre tickbox.
To include an item in the menu bar for even faster access, select its Show in Menu Bar tickbox.
You can’t add items in the Menu Bar Only section to Control Centre.
