A Guide To Buying A Linux Laptop

It goes without saying that if you go to a computer store downtown to buy a new laptop, you will be offered a notebook with Windows preinstalled, or a Mac. Either way, you’ll be forced to pay an extra fee – either for a Microsoft license or for the Apple logo on the back.

On the other hand, you have the option to buy a laptop and install a distribution of your choice. However, the hardest part may be to find the right hardware that will get along nicely with the operating system.

On top of that, we also need to consider the availability of drivers for the hardware. So what do you do? The answer is simple: buy a laptop with Linux preinstalled.

Fortunately, there are several respectable vendors that offer high-quality, well-known brands and distributions and ensure you will not have to worry about the availability of drivers.

That said, in this article we will list the top 3 machines of our choice based on the intended usage.

I always wonder why I never see ZaReason on these lists. The last few times I’ve used them, they were a bit cheaper, their configuration web pages are really and they are really good about not voiding warranties if you open the case. (The warranty came in a ziplock bag with a screw driver and a note that it’s ok to open up the case.) I’ve never had to use the warranty so I don’t know if it’s worth anything. I was able to work with them over email prior to an order to to get partitioning and raid setup how I wanted out of the box before.

I’m using to hearing them mentions with System76 & penguin. Does ZaReason have any issues I should be aware of? It’s been a while since I’ve bought a new computer. Maybe things have changed? It’s been a while since I’ve shopped, but as an advanced Linux user who doesn’t have the patience to troubleshoot new components anymore, I could sing their praises for the computers I’ve bought from them. The price was good and the computers have each run for at least a decade.

Unfortunately Zareason has shut down due to Covid.
