How to Fix a Car Window That Falls Down Into the Door

Automotive windows use a control arm and guide regulator to raise and lower a pane of glass into the door, either manually or with an electric motor. When the pane of glass works its way out of the regulator, it can fall into the door. The average backyard mechanic can repair fallen window glass in about an hour.

Step 1

Remove the interior door panel to gain access to the window. Several screws will hold it in place, typically underneath the arm rest and in the door handle mount. Once it is unscrewed, it can be gently pulled away from the «pop rivets» that attach it to the door’s metal. This exposes the window regulator and the window glass.

Step 2

Remove the window glass pane by working it up through the door by hand. There are several holes in the door metal where the glass can be moved up and out slowly. Be sure not to take it out completely, as there are bolt holes that may not fit through the window opening.

Step 3

Reattach the window to the regulator, or replace the window by uncoupling it from any bottom mounts and sliding it out completely. The mount will attach to the regulator with a clip that pinches the window, or more commonly a bolt run through a hole in the glass. When these clips or bolts become loose, the window can disconnect from the regulator and drop into the door. Hold the window in place and lightly tighten the bolts in a clockwise direction, or pinch the clips with pliers before the glass is in place.

Step 4

Test the window before replacing the door panel, and watch the motion of the window regulator as it moves the glass. Any ineffective repairs will be obvious when the window is used repeatedly, and replacing the panel prematurely can waste time.

Replace the door panel by popping it back onto the pop rivets and securing its screws. Tap firmly on the areas of the panel that do not easily seat onto the rivets.

How much does it cost to get a window back up? My back window fell halfway down so I ghetto duct taped it for now. I don’t really carry if the motor works anymore as I never use the back window. as long as it just stays up. 🙁

Hmm, well it depends on how it failed.

If you’re lucky you might be able to pop off the door panel and mess with the regulator system (the pulleys and guides that bring your window up and down) to have it locked into the «up» position. That being said, such a scenario would only be probable if you rolled the window down, the motor failed, and you couldn’t bring it back up afterwards.

If the window fell down on its own, it probably has something to do with the regulator system and you’ll likely have to buy a new motor/regulator all together to get it back up.

Pull the window up, tape it hard in place, and squirt adhesive down between the seal and the glass. Should work.

Or pull the door card, lift it and wedge it up, and then replace the card.

So you know, you can fix it later, instead of filling the damned track or weather strip with sealant.

I assume the window is electric? It’s a piece of piss to fix a window that’s fallen off it’s actuator. Remove the door card (might cost you £2 to replace some inserts), undo the bolts holding the motor (and window if appropriate), reposition everything and lock it all back up again. A little fiddly, especially if you need to reapply the putty to the plastic film between the door card and the machinery, but not exactly expensive nor difficult to do.

For $150 I would expect the window to be sealed. As usual people post on this board without any clues as to what they drive, so we can’t help. I will assume you drive an MX-5 as that’s what I was working on today — a new electric motor is less than £100 and usually the motors are fine, it just needs recalibration and/or re-greasing. Paying that much would be like paying for a new soft top because the roof doesn’t quite align any more. 45 minutes with the spanners and now my roof is even more waterproof than when I bought the car. Total cost? 67p as I accidentally started the car with my trickle charger connected (had my music on). I’d rather accidentally spend 67p instead of blindly shelling out hundreds of Pounds to replace a perfectly functional roof.

I can’t get it to the mechanic till next week. What do I do in the meantime? Sometimes it stays up and sometimes falls all the way down. I have a 99 Grand Am with electric windows. I don’t want it looking ghetto!

Use a door stop and just jam it in there. There’s not much else you can do unless you can find something see through that will fill it. It needs pressure to stay up until they can fix it, cause I assume you don’t want to use tape of any sort. Just put it close to the front and the side mirror might help hide it.

First pull the door panel off and see in the window is on the track if not then put it back in its rail, then look to see why it fell out of its place and try to fix it. if thats not the problem just wedge something like cardboard in the window.

If you’re going to the shop next week, duct tape it up. You’ll look like an idiot for a week, but at least you’ll have the window in one piece when you get there.Your friends will laugh but it will always be a conversation piece.

without taking the door panel off, put a wedge of wood or plastic on the inside of window between bottom of glass and door panel.

this is what i did to my old kia. all the windows fell down because the electric motor dont work so i removed the door panel and placed a 2×4 thats holding the windows up. however, i cant roll down the windows anymore. luckily, the air con still works perfectly. Good luck!!

Pull the door panel(2 minutes) find the loose part(2 minutes) and out it back together(2 minutes). 6 minutes is pretty quick.

fold a piece of card board and place it between the glass and the channel that will hold it up until you can get it repaired,done it many a time and it works well and will hold even if it rains on it,good luck.
