Winterizing Your Home: Window and Door Caulking
Keep your home warm and conserve energy during the winter months by sealing up the small holes and cracks around the windows and doors of your home with caulk. These areas, if left unsealed, can let large amounts of cold air into your home, as well as let heat escape. Pick up a caulking gun at your local hardware store and get to sealing those cracks before winter comes.
Purchasing Caulk: What to Buy
The best type of caulk to get for this project is a white, latex, interior caulk that is also weather resistant and mold and mildew resistant. This way, your caulking job will last as long as possible and protect the area.
Interior caulking has less fumes and does not stink up the house like caulking designed for exterior surfaces. Get express caulk, which is designed to expand and dry in less time. This can be especially handy in case you have small children or want to paint over your caulk the same day.
Preparations: Inspect and Clean
First, inspect the house, making a list of any and all areas you wish to caulk, so that no corner is forgotten. You will need to do the corners and edges of frames around doors and windows. Any small opening caused by rain, weather, or age should be sealed up.
Make sure all surfaces you wish to caulk are clean and free of dust, dirt, and debris, such as pet hair or sand. All debris will stick to the caulk and make your project look sloppy. Wipe down any dirty surfaces with a damp rag, but allow these areas to dry for several hours before caulking. Any moisture sealed under caulking can turn into mold or mildew.
Caulking: How To
Put your caulking cartridge into your caulking gun. Use the scissors to cut the tip of the caulking cartridge into a point at about 1/2 inch from the tip. Cut at a 45 degree angle from one side, and then cut from the other side of the tip at the same angle, so that your cartridge tip comes to a point at the end.
Step 1 — Stick the tip of the caulking cartridge into the corner you wish to seal and pull the caulking gun handle/trigger slightly until you get just a bit of caulk to come out. Keep the tip moving, as you want an even amount released, no more than about 1/4 inch thick. Start at the top of a frame and work your way down, or work right to left.
Step 2- Once your caulk has been applied, wipe your finger in the same place and direction the caulking gun went. Press the caulk down into the crevices along the edge, to where you stopped applying caulk. You want the caulk to look even and smooth. You will have excess caulk on your finger at the end. Simply wipe this on a rag or paper towel.
Step 3- Use another wet rag to wipe along the edge of the caulk if any gets pressed too far out from the corner. It should remove easily with soap and water while it is still wet.
Step 4- Continue to do this in all corners and crevices of your home until all cracks are sealed. Let it dry completely before painting. A proper caulking job should not require painting unless the area is painted bright or dark colors.
Caulking Around Window and Door Frames: The Whys and How’s
Caulking is used to fill gaps and cracks around doors and windows to stop air, water, and even insects from getting in. For the best protection, it should be applied to both the interior and exterior of your home. Read on to find out why you should apply caulking, and how to do it right.
How to Caulk Windows and Doors Correctly?
There’s no doubt that caulking is essential for keeping your home warm, dry and energy-efficient, but do you know how to do it yourself? Here are our top tips on how to apply it.
- Check the Temperature – Cold weather can affect your caulking, and since the temperature can drop to below freezing in Toronto winters, this isn’t the ideal time to do it. Humid summers aren’t good either, as cracks in the frames of windows and entry doors in Toronto are liable to swell. Instead, apply caulk when the weather is warm, preferably above 45°F.
- Prepare the Area – Before applying caulk to windows and doors , make sure the area is clean and dry. Remove any existing caulk or paint with a screwdriver or a knife. If you’re having trouble, you can use a solvent to help remove stubborn residue. Leave it to dry for a while, as applying caulk straight away will lock in moisture, which could lead to problems later on.
- Choose Your Caulk Wisely – When shopping for caulk, you’re likely to have a choice between silicone and acrylic. Acrylic is best avoided, as it can shrink, leaving cracks open for moisture and air to seep in. Without regular reapplication, damage could be caused. The best type of caulk to use for protecting your windows exteriors and doors is 100% silicone.
- Use the Right Technique – The knack of applying caulk sufficiently is holding the gun the right way. In order to fill cracks smoothly and avoid the formation of air bubbles, hold the gun at approximately a forty five degree angle. Once you start, caulking, keep going in a continuous action from one corner to another instead of stopping and starting. This will result in the smoothest finish.
- Fill the Cracks – If the caulk doesn’t completely fill a crack, it’s essentially useless. Make sure you apply enough to fill the space properly, sticking to both sides. If it comes out, simply use a putty knife to direct it back in.
- Use Tools – You’ll need more than just a caulking gun. For big gaps, a backer rod can be laid down before caulking to help fill the space. Keep a putty knife to hand in case things get messy and the caulk doesn’t quite go where you want it to, you can use it to push the caulk into the right areas. Aside from that, you’ll also need to use your fingers to smooth the caulk as you apply it, making sure it’s neat and even without lumps or gaps. That way, you’ll get the best possible seal.
- Take Care of Your Gun – When you’re done caulking, be sure to cover the end of your caulking gun to stop it from drying out. Otherwise, you may find it to be useless the next time you pick it up. There should be a cap provided for this purpose, but if you happen to lose it, a nail will suffice.

How To Caulk Windows and Doors
If you didn’t happen to get around to caulking your windows and doors for these summer months, it’s not too late! You can still save on your energy bill by keeping out the heat during this hot summer and prepare for the fall and winter by keeping out the cold. This simple DIY project should be an easy task for those who are not so handy, so here are some tips to start those savings.
By caulking, you are able to seal up any gaps where air may be leaking out of or coming into your home. Who knew that by simply sealing these areas around your doors and windows can help you save money on your energy bill. In addition to these money saving tactics it can also prevent any moisture or water damage around these entryways of the home.
This DIY project makes it easy to take advantage of energy savings tips, and here is how to get started:
1. First, detect where the air leaks are coming from and choose the correct sealing weapon of choice. It is good to be educated on the various options when it comes to choosing a caulk, such as water based, silicone, spray foam, rubber based, etc. So for a longer lasting seal, waterproof, or silicone would be the best options. This way the caulk is flexible and crack proof to prevent any future leaks.
2. Second, make sure you clean the surface prior to caulking. When applying a substance that you want to last long, it is crucial to get rid of any excess dirt or old caulk followed by wiping the surface clean.
3. Then prepare your caulking gun or whichever applicator you chose. If you wish to cut the nozzle to a desired size, do so as needed. (This may be useful depending on how big the gaps are) Load your caulk cartridge into the gun and begin to evenly seal any cracks or gaps in your windows and doors.
4. After applied, it is important to wipe down any excess caulk with a wet rag or simply use your hands if you wish. Be sure to do this before the caulk has dried.
5. Now you may clean up your work area by sealing your caulk gun. Wipe any lose remnants with a clean rags so your project looks professional. By cleaning your caulk gun it will make it much easier the next time you need to use it.
Remember, when caulking around your windows or doors allow time for it to dry before painting any woodwork. This way the bristles from the paintbrush won’t remove any caulk from the gap you just filled. By doing this it will minimize more work down the road!
