[RESOLVED] Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 — No kernel driver in use

RESOLUTION:
This issue is fixed in this kernel commit. Future users [of kernel 3.10 +] are unlikely to encounter this issue.

I have a Lenovo T431s laptop with a Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 wireless card and an having difficulty getting the wireless card to work.

When I start up, this module is not loaded automatically; «lsmod | grep iwlfwifi» has no output

So I do «modprobe iwlwifi» and then

lsmod | grep iwlfwifi

I have also checked that the correct firmware (iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode) exists in /lib/firmware.

But after that, I do not see that this driver is in use

nor do I see a wireless interface

Google / Forum searches reveal thread like https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146518 where someone is having trouble with the card, but it is at least working.

Does anyone have ideas of things to check and/or try? Thanks.

Have you looked in the bios? The Lenovos have a couple of options to disable the hardware.
Is it a stock card (built-in from Lenovo) or did you buy it yourself?

I did look in the BIOS and did not see any mention of options related to the wireless card.

Is it a stock card (built-in from Lenovo) or did you buy it yourself?

It is stock. And when I received the computer, I booted into Windows and tested that the card worked.

Have you looked in the bios? The Lenovos have a couple of options to disable the hardware.

Then the output of the following might help

In your lspci output above you cut exactly the line where the driver in use should be noted, eg.

Ah, thanks. It was under I/O Port Access. I was expecting network, etc. Unfortunately, everything (Wireless LAN, Wireless WAN, Bluetooth) says [ENABLED].

Then the output of the following might help

Here is the output of those commands

rfkill list all

dmesg |grep firmware just gives only a single line which is about the IBM trackpoint. Here is all of dmesg

You can see my manual modprobe at the end.

In your lspci output above you cut exactly the line where the driver in use should be noted, eg.

the module is not listed there in your case?

Yes, exactly. No driver is indicated!

Another suggestion, I read a thread[1] where the guy was disabling the wireless antenna with hotkey under Windows, and could only access the card under linux after re-enabling it from Windows. If you still have Win installed, it might be worth to check if that is not your case.

Edit: Also, you could check if the card is working under another (live) distro.

Yes, but it should still be listed by rfkill usually — if blocked by the key. Nonetheless, worth to try that function key for it in windows for sure (if you can).

Another thing to look, why the module is not autoloaded .. assuming you get the output by

Another suggestion, I read a thread[1] where the guy was disabling the wireless antenna with hotkey under Windows, and could only access the card under linux after re-enabling it from Windows. If you still have Win installed, it might be worth to check if that is not your case.

Edit: Also, you could check if the card is working under another (live) distro.

Thanks for the link. I hope it’s not that because I nuked my win install. The live distro is a good suggestion. I am making a live usb Ubuntu now. I will let you know how it goes.

The fact that it is not being autoloaded, this is some statment about udev not seeing the hardware? I’m new enough to this that I’m not sure how to debug this.

If you have the time/patience for reinstalling everything then I guess you should. I’ve read of several cases where wireless card were switched off under windows and went undetected by linux. Is there a hard switch for the wifi card on the laptop?

Ok, I will probably give that a try over the weekend and report back.

I don’t see one nor does my user manual mention one.

I think it is actually a Fn+F# combination. That is how it has started to be on many new Lenovo systems. For example on my E430 it is Fn+F9. The availability of this function is handled by the thinkpad_acpi module and the /proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey file. If this button exists on your machine, you may want to have a look at the thinkpad-acpi docs in the linux-docs package.

Ah, yes Fn+F8 appears to be «airplane mode» (disable all radios). Just pressing it doesn’t do anything, but I will look into the thinkpad-acpi docs.

Yep. Compiled the core/linux kernel with just that patch using ABS and now things seem to work just as they should.

In case you saw a corresponding Ubuntu launchpad-id in your search for it, please add it in the text. Unfortunately the askubuntu does not give it and it is easier for others to follow up when encountering the same odd problem you had.

It appears to be a one liner that simply adds the pci id. I guess the card must be a very new revision of the 6235. It is a nery nice card though, I enjoyed mine while I was able to use it.

Hey, I am having this same problem with my Think pad T431s. I see that the resolution says that the fix is in the latest kernel, and I have just installed Arch on my computer and have ran pacman -Syu to ensure everything is up to date. I simply cannot get my WiFi drivers to be recognized, even after trying everything in this thread. Are there any other possible solutions out there?
