Overview

A design based on Monotype 20th Century, which was drawn by Sol Hess between 1936 and 1947. Century Gothic maintains the basic design of 20th Century but has an enlarged ‘x’ height and has been modified to ensure satisfactory output from modern digital systems. The design is influenced by the geometric style sans serif faces which were popular during the 1920’s and 30’s. Useful for headlines and general display work and for small quantities of text, particularly in advertising.

Question: Q: century font

Why does High Sierra not support the Century font? Century is used by the Supreme Court and the Solicitor General. http://www.ca7.uscourts.gov/forms/type.pdf See p. 4. Century has been included for years. Some of my pdf files now appear distorted. Word will allow Century, but it is not on the pull-down menu. I have to type in Century. I get error messages opening Word files that use Century.

If a particular font is not among them you may ask Apple, and they won’t answer.

All we can do is speculate. Reasons has been alleged to include copyright or licensing requirements.

There may be a workaround for you. Refer to Fonts available for document support in High Sierra. Century Gothic and Century Schoolbook are among them. You may be able to copy one you want from the respective application’s Library, and install it as a standard font. Try it.

Interesting — it’s not included on their list. However, I upgraded to HS some time ago and do have Century, and I don’t think I’ve added any new sw that included fonts.

It’s available for download from several places for free, though, including http://freakfonts.com/fonts/century-regular-font-download.html.

A font is just a font. The Mac OS will support any standard Type 1 PostScript, OpenType or TrueType font you want to use. That your copy won’t open means there’s something wrong on your end.

Minor note. The embedded version of Century in your linked PDF is New Century Schoolbook.

Was Word already running when you added the font? If so, quit Word and relaunch it. Office (even the new 2016 version) will not show any font that was activated after any Office app was already in use.

Every release of OS X and macOS since Snow Leopard have been installing Century Gothic, Century Schoolbook, and other font families as part of the operating system installation. Apple always neglects to mention this, and the font location:

Again, these are installed by the operating system, and not any iWork package installation. By default, Font Book is unaware of these fonts, as are all applications.

One can create a new font collection in Font Book (arbitrarily calling it iWork), and then aim it at the above folder. It will then add these fonts within the new collection, where they will become available to all applications.

Correct. However, neither font is plain Jane Century.

Here’s Microsoft’s page that lists products that «should» come with Century.

Yup, if Kenneth needs a plain Century font, Office 2008 and 2011 install it. It should be in the /Library/Fonts/Microsoft/ folder.

Office 2016 sandboxes all of its fonts within each app. It comes with Century, Century Gothic, and Century Schoolbook.

Thanks to all of you who have replied.

Let me explain my situation a little better. I have Century. It appears in Font Book, in Library/Fonts, and in Library/Microsoft/Fonts. Word files that were created in Century continue to appear in Century. I can make Century work for new content in Word, but only if I type Century into the box with the name of the font. Century appeared in the font pull-down menu until I upgraded to High Sierra.

This change immediately after installing High Sierra caused me to look into whether High Sierra dropped Century. Apple Support does not show Century as being supported.

Century (plain, not Gothic or Schoolbook) appears nowhere on the page, including the lists of fonts downloadable or supported.

PDF documents created in Century appear in Century, but the portions in Century Bold are badly distorted. I don’t have Century Bold in Font or Library.

Thus, it seems that Apple has done something to make it difficult to use Century. My hope is that Apple simply failed to realize that this font is used by a number of people for legal documents, and that Apple will restore things to the way they were before High Sierra.

I also have Century Schoolbook and Century Gothic, but it is Century that I’m concerned about right now.

Just because Century is not included with HS doesn’t mean it’s not supported. It certainly ought to be.

That’s the first mention you made of Microsoft Word. Thanks for that clarification. It seems to me the difficulties you are having lie with it, not macOS’s font support itself. Is that not correct? If so you should be asking Microsoft. Apple cannot control what Microsoft does.

What you could try is downloading and installing a free Century Bold.ttf font and see how that works for you.

John — That was my first inclination, to go to Microsoft, but then I did a little research to see if others were having the problem and saw that Century does not appear on this page:

The change also took place right after I installed High Sierra. I had used Century for years with the same version of Word. Thus, I don’t think Word is the problem. If the issue is not completely caused by High Sierra, then it is the interaction of Word with High Sierra.

Century does work with High Sierra, so Century is «supported.» It’s just inconvenient. It seems like an easy fix for Apple.

I never had Century, only New Century and its variants, but upgrading macOS doesn’t remove existing fonts. As I understand it, the Century font you need is still available in your Font Book and is therefore available to every Mac app, is that correct?

If the issue is not completely caused by High Sierra, then it is the interaction of Word with High Sierra. . It seems like an easy fix for Apple.

I think you’re missing the point. Interaction or not, Apple did not develop Microsoft Word and can do nothing about it. Apple can’t fix it. Microsoft has to do that. They have to adapt to each and every macOS update or upgrade. Things have always been that way, not just for Microsoft but for everyone that writes software for macOS. Contact them and see what they have to say. Apple will not be interested.

I installed that font, and Century was immediately available to Pages as well as OpenOffice. I didn’t try anything else.

I don’t have Microsoft Word but the fact it works in Pages supports my conclusion it’s something Microsoft has to fix.

FWIW, I have a Windows 10 Professional box and Century and/or Century Bold are not installed. Apparently they are only available from Microsoft if you install Word or Office. Which I don’t have.

And for what it’s worth Century and Century Bold would be two different fonts.

I agree, it’s a question for Microsoft.

Well, this is certainly a problem.

It appears in Font Book, in Library/Fonts, and in Library/Microsoft/Fonts.

That’s an automatic font conflict. You can fix it by disabling one or the other in Font Book, but it’s better to not have the ability to create a conflict at all and delete one or the other instance of the Century font from the drive.

No, Apple has not done anything to make it difficult to use one particular font. What could possibly be the purpose?

The main item here is the problem started when you upgraded to High Sierra. Bluntly, Font Bork is a terrible font manager. I can’t tell you how many times, through multiple OS upgrades and updates that folks report fonts suddenly don’t work right afterwards. At least 90% of the time, it’s because Font Book’s database gets hosed in the process.

Shut all apps down. Delete one of the same-named Century fonts. Restart the Mac and hold down the Shift key to enter Safe Mode. Login to your account when the password screen comes up. When it gets to the desktop, restart again normally.

This, among other cleanup procedures the OS does in a Safe Mode startup, clears all cache files from the user account you logged into in Safe Mode, and resets Font Book’s database.
