Full screen command prompt in Windows 10

In Windows 10 you can open a Command Prompt in full-screen, but in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, if you try to maximize the command prompt window, it will expand only to cover around half the screen. You will not be even able to drag and increase its size.

In Windows XP, after you open a command prompt, you could run the cmd in full-screen mode by clicking Alt+Enter, but if you try this in Windows Vista and later, you will get the following message: This system does not support fullscreen mode.

This happens because, in Windows 7, the device drivers do not support running all of the DOS video modes. The device drivers are based on the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM).

You may be able to work around this problem by installing the Microsoft Windows XP version of the video drivers for your video adapter. But by doing this, while you may be able to run full-screen DOS programs, you may lose the ability to run Aero.

There is another workaround of sorts, being recommended on the Internet for this if you want the cmd to fill your screen. But remember that it is NOT the full-screen command prompt as is understood in XP; it is only a maximized window!

Type cmd in Start search box and right-click on the cmd shortcut which appears in the results. Select Run CMD as administrator.

Next, in the command prompt, type wmic and hit Enter.

Now try to maximize it!

Close it and again open it. It will open as a maximized window!

You may have to ensure that the Quick Edit Mode in the Options tab is checked.

Of course, you could instead, also change its screen buffer size and window size, to achieve the same results!

If you want to reset the size back to normal defaults, right-click the title bar and open Properties.

In the Layout tab, set Screen Buffer Size Width to 80, Window Size Width to 80 and Window Size Height to 25. Click OK.

In Windows 7, there’s no such thing as a real full-screen window-less cmd! What this trick does is simply make the screen size big!

In Windows 10, you need to open the Command Prompt and then press Alt+Enter, and the CMD window will open in fullscreen.

As we know, WDDM driver doesn’t support INT 10 communicatations with VBIOS because of the unstability. So when WDDM driver is enabled, cmd prompt cannot be switched to full screen mode by pressing ALT+Enter.

But after you disable and re-enable your display driver in device manager, you can find that the command prompt CAN be switched to full screen mode. The problem is after you switch it back, the resolution is not the previous one, it still keeps the VGA mode.

So my question is, is this known issue to windows 7? Will it be fixed in Windows 8?

I may already know the root cause. If it is an known issue and you have a waiver, please advise a link.

After enabling display driver, I didn’t restart OS. If restart OS, this issue will not appear. But since WDDM driver is supposed to support PnP start/stop, user should continue use the windows without restarting OS. If OS need to be restarted to recognize the WDDM driver correctly, then such user experience will may no difference with XDDM driver.

One thing that I can tell is that, after disable display driver, OS should update Fullscreen Graphics Device to VGA display, so that VGA driver and VBIOS can take control of the mode set.

After enable display driver, OS should also update Fullscreen Graphics Device, there should have no VGA display because display driver will take control the mode change. But looks OS fails to do so, so the full screen switching is not blocked.

How can I use the Windows 7 command prompt in fullscreen? [duplicate]

I use some DOS applications in Windows 7.

Before Windows 7, I could press Alt + Enter to run the application in full screen, but with Windows 7 I can’t do this anymore.

I get the message:

This system does not support full screen mode

Is there any workaround?

I know that this isn’t related to CMD, but if you really need to run dos applications in full screen, you can try setting up DosBox. http://www.dosbox.com/

Full-screen mode for console applications (regardless of whether they’re DOS programs or Windows console applications) isn’t supported anymore with WDDM display drivers. You should still be able to go full-screen when using legacy drivers, although you then lose Aero and most of the hardware acceleration for display.

If you wrap CMD in within Console2, you can make the windows as big as the screen if you wish, although there is no actual full screen mode.

Vista and Windows 7 uses a very different video driver. It is infact very very much different from that of Windows XP. It improved performance but the down side is that it does not allow full screen console based applications to be launched.

Microsoft did launch a fix to downgrade the video driver to Windows XP but it is quite dangerous if things go wrong. So we might go for an alternative way. There are softwares which «emulate» the command prompt by software hence removing the need for windows command prompt completely. The user experience is not as good as the real one provides but it is still a decent solution to your problem.

I presume that you run the app within XP mode. If you disable «integration features» in the tools menu it should run just fine.
