Tutorial: Set up Powerline in Windows Terminal
Powerline provides a customized command prompt experience providing Git status color-coding and prompts.
In this tutorial, you learn how to:
- Set up Powerline in PowerShell
- Set up Powerline in Ubuntu/WSL
- Add missing Powerline glyphs
Prerequisites
Install a Powerline font
Powerline uses glyphs in order to style the prompt. If your font does not include Powerline glyphs, you may see several Unicode replacement characters ‘в–Ї’ throughout your prompt. Though Cascadia Mono does not include Powerline glyphs, you can install Cascadia Code PL or Cascadia Mono PL, which have the Powerline glyphs included. These fonts can be installed from the Cascadia Code GitHub releases page.
Set up Powerline in PowerShell
PowerShell prerequisites
If you don’t already have it, install Git for Windows.
Using PowerShell, install Posh-Git and Oh-My-Posh:
You may need to install NuGet if you don’t already have it. Your PowerShell command line will ask if you want to install NuGet if this is the case. Select [Y] Yes. You may also need to approve that you are installing modules from PSGallery, an ‘untrusted repository’. Select [Y] Yes.
Posh-Git adds Git status information to your prompt as well as tab-completion for Git commands, parameters, remotes, and branch names. Oh-My-Posh provides theme capabilities for your PowerShell prompt.
If you are using PowerShell Core, install PSReadline:
PSReadline lets you customize the command line editing environment in PowerShell.
Customize your PowerShell prompt
Open your PowerShell profile with notepad $PROFILE or the text editor of your choice. This is not your Windows Terminal profile. Your PowerShell profile is a script that runs every time PowerShell starts. Learn more about PowerShell profiles.
In your PowerShell profile, add the following to the end of the file:
Now, each new instance starts by importing Posh-Git and Oh-My-Posh, then setting the Paradox theme from Oh-My-Posh. Oh-My-Posh comes with several built-in themes. If you decide to use Cascadia Code PL as a font, oh-my-posh themes that contain minimal function without the need for additional icons. You can also create a custom theme to match the font of your choice.
Script execution policy must be set to either RemoteSigned or Unrestricted in order for the profile script to run. Run this command to see your current execution policy Get-ExecutionPolicy . Learn more about Execution Policies
Set Cascadia Code PL as your font
To set the Cascadia Code PL font for use with PowerLine (after downloading, unzipping, and installing on your system), you will need to open your profile settings in your settings.json file by selecting Settings (Ctrl+,) from your Windows Terminal dropdown menu. This can also be done using the settings UI if you have it enabled.
Once your settings.json file opens, find the Windows PowerShell profile and add: «fontFace»: «Cascadia Code PL» to designate Cascadia Code PL as the font. This will provide those nice Cascadia Code Powerline glyphs. You should notice the change in your terminal as soon as you select Save in your editor.
Your Windows PowerShell profile settings.json file should now look like this:
For Powerline to work with the integrated terminal in Visual Studio Code, add «terminal.integrated.fontFamily»: «Cascadia Code PL» to your Visual Studio Code settings. For Visual Studio 2019, set the terminal font via Options > Font and Colors and choose Terminal in the dropdown menu. You can then select the Cascadia Code PL font to make sure Powerline works there, too.
Set up Powerline in WSL Ubuntu
WSL Ubuntu prerequisites
Ubuntu has several Powerline options to install from. This tutorial will be using oh-my-posh for Linux:
First, install oh-my-posh:
The second step is optonal. Oh-my-posh can use the same theme config regardless of the shell or evironment, so if you’re already using it on Windows Powershell for example, you can reuse that theme configuration rather than download the themes. If you plan to use it within Ubuntu WSL only, fetch the themes so you can get started right away:
If you’re using Ubuntu 18.04 or 16.04, you’ll need to first install the correct version of golang:
Customize your Ubuntu prompt
/.bashrc file with nano
/.bashrc or the text editor of your choice. This is a bash script that runs every time bash starts. Add the following (change the theme to the one you like):

Things to consider with blown double glazed units
The main reason why double glazed units become misty is that the seal between the two panes of glass has failed. If this happens, then you do not need to replace the entire window including the frame. You can in fact simply replace the double glazed unit itself, alternatively, there are even specialist companies which can repair the double glazed units by removing any moisture and resealing the window.
Replacing a double glazed unit is fairly straightforward and in fact, any local handyman or DIY enthusiasts should be able to do it. However, the difficult part and the part which can often lead to expensive mistakes, as the initial measuring of the window before placing an order with a manufacturer. Any mistakes in this initial measurements can result in a brand-new double glazed unit which simply will not fit properly into the existing window frame.
Doing it Yourself
Removing blown double glazed units is normally fairly simple, although some modern double glazed windows are fitted with special antitheft blocks which can complicate things. The double glazed units themselves can be held in place using pressure gaskets or double sided tape, but in either case can be removed relatively easily. Before ordering the replacement double glazed unit you will not only have to be very precise with the measurements, you will also need to know the thickness of the glass panes, whether the glass is toughened, and the type of glass for example is the glass tinted or standard.
With the right skills and tools, DIY replacement of a double glazed unit is certainly possible. But you also have to consider that this is not a terribly expensive job and if you get a professional in then the job won’t take as long, or be as messy, and will be much less hassle and frustration, and you can avoid a potentially shoddy job being done and then having to hire a professional in anyway!
What can I delete from Windows folder in Windows 10?
If you are running out of disk space and wondering if there is anything more you can delete from the Windows folder, then you need to read this post first. If your C drive is full or if your Windows folder in Windows 10/8/7 is taking too much space, then it can become annoying when you are stuck because of low storage warnings. The obvious thing we do is go into the Windows folder, try to figure out what is taking a lot of space, and delete files without any understanding.
The right thing to do is never delete anything directly from the Windows folder at all. If there is anything that is taking space on that folder, the best way is to use Disk Cleanup Tool or Storage Sense. These built-in tools should do the job for you, but if you are still keen, here is what you can do manually!
What can I delete from Windows folder
Do note that we are only considering files that are inside the Windows folder and nothing outside it. Before we begin, create a system restore point first. If you want to save even the space occupied by System Restore points, then you should disable System Restore – although this is not something we advise.
You may use a disk space analyzer freeware to find out what is consuming disk space in the Windows folder and then take a look at the files. Taking a look at the section in the Storage Sense Settings may help you understand what is taking space, and you can choose wisely.
1] Windows Temporary Folder
The Temporary folder is available at C:\Windows\Temp. Its used by Windows to download files here, and then move it to the right place. So even if you delete everything from here, it’s not a problem. The system will redownload those files again when it finds them missing.
2] Hibernate File
Hibernate file is used by Windows to keep the current state of the OS. The state is saved into a file–hiberfil.sys. It is usually around 70% to 80% of your computer memory. If your computer houses 6 to 8 GB of memory, you can calculate about 4 GB to 6 GB storage space occupied by this file.
To delete this, first enable hidden system files option, and then locate the file in the Windows folder. The other option is to disable hibernation entirely if you do not need it. Execute the command powercfg.exe /hibernate off in the Command Prompt, and it will disable it.
3] Windows.old folder
While this is not inside the Windows folder, its a copy of old Windows folder. When you install or update to a new version of Windows, a copy of all the existing files is available in the Windows. Old folder. It is useful if you ever wish to restore to the previous version.
It occupies a considerable amount of space. If you don’t need it anymore, you can delete it without any problem.
4] Downloaded Program Files
Located at “C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files,” this is a folder where Internet Explorer and any program that uses ActiveX tech or Java related tech downloaded files are stored. These technologies are now outdated, and you can choose to delete everything without any issue.
5] Prefetch
Yes, you could delete the contents of the Prefetch folder, but it would get repopulated over time.
6] Fonts
You can uninstall unwanted Fonts to reduce the size of the Fonts folder
7] SoftwareDistribution folder
You could delete the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, but it would get repopulated after running Windows Update.
8] Offline Web Pages
You could delete the contents of the Offline Web Pages folder.
9] WinSxS Folder
You cannot delete this directory or move it elsewhere. Nor is it advisable to delete anything here, as such a step could probably make your applications un-workable or even break your system! If you have many applications installed, you can expect to have a jumbo-sized WinSxS folder. This WinSxS folder cannot reside on any other volume than the system volume. This is because of the NTFS hard links. If you try to move the folder, it may result in Windows updates, service packs, features, etc., not installing correctly. If you delete components from the WinSxS folder like the manifests or the assemblies, etc., you could be in trouble.
Running this command /AnalyzeComponentStore will analyze the WinSxS folder and tell you whether a Component Store Cleanup is recommended or not.
Instead of directly deleting anything from here, it is recommended to use the DISM cleanup command.
The StartComponentCleanup parameter will make sure to clean all the unnecessary files from the WinSxS folder and keep what should stay.
In Windows 10/8.1/8, you open Disk Cleanup Tool and use the Windows Update Cleanup option to clean the WinSxS. Microsoft also released an Update that added the Windows Update Cleanup option to Disk Cleanup tool in Windows 7. You can also clean up WinSxS in Windows Server as well.
10] Using Compact Windows OS
It’s not just any folder, but a command which helps you to reduce overall storage space of Windows 10 installation. Termed as Compact OS, once executed the system will run from compressed files, similar to WIMBoot. It is designed to fit Windows install small devices that cannot manage to have high storage. Do note that it might take up to 20-30 minutes when you run the COMPACT command to compress or decompress the files.
Finally, remember to empty the Recycle Bin!
It is best not to delete files from the Windows directory without a clear understanding of why they are there. So choose wisely. If in doubt, don’t!
