a command line launcher for windows os launch anything, be it executables or arbitrary files by simple alias that you can run as command in any terminals

• download and unzip
• place the bin folder in root of C:/ drive so that the path looks like: C:/bin
• if you place in other paths then adjust the binpath in \bin\launcher.bat around line 11 accordingly
• run command path/to/bin/launcher.bat and it sets up itself

add new launcher

run command launcher «targetFile» alias

targetFile The fullpath of file to be invoked via command

alias The command that will invoke targetFile

alias is Optional, defaults to name of targetFile

1. launcher «D:/sublime/sublime_text.exe» sublime
2. launcher «D:/sublime/sublime_text.exe»

consider above example #1, we have aliased a command sublime

• just run command sublime to launch the sublime editor
• or run with extra args sublime /path/to/some/file.php to launch sublime editor and have that file.php already opened

consider above example #2, we dont have alias so sublime_text is assumed by default

• run command sublime_text

How do I launch a program from command line without opening a new cmd window?

I’m trying to programmatically execute an external file from cmd using this command:

Where «filepath» is the path of my file. It opens fine but it also open a new command prompt window.

So, which is the right command for opening an external program without opening a new window?

In Windows 7+ the first quotations will be the title to the cmd window to open the program:

Formatting your command like the above will temporarily open a cmd window that goes away as fast as it comes up so you really never see it. It also allows you to open more than one program without waiting for the first one to close first.

Add /B, as documented in the command-line help for start:

If you want to maximize the window, try this:

Your command START «filepath» will start a command prompt and change the command prompt title to filepath .

Try to run start /? in windows command prompt and you will get more info.

I think if you closed a program

end, so if you want to start a program that you can use

(/norma,/max/min are that process value cpu)

start «filepath»

if you want command line without openning an new window you write that

start /b «filepath»

/B is Start application without creating a new window. The application has ^C handling ignored. Unless the application enables ^C processing, ^Break is the only way to interrupt the application.

If you’re doing it via CMD as you say, then you can just enter the command like so:

which will open it within the same window. For example in C++:

will open your.exe in the current CMD window. Likewise to start with a new window, just go for:

If you go for the first option, you would have to clear your screen unless you wanted to have the command to open your.exe on the screen still.

You can use the call command.

Usage: call [drive:][path]filename [batch-parameters]

For example call «Example File/Input File/My Program.bat» [This is also capable with calling files that have a .exe, .cmd, .txt, etc.

NOTE: THIS COMMAND DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK.

Not all computers are capable to run this command, but if it does work than it is very useful, and you won’t have to open a brand new window.

Create Command-line Launcher Intellij not found

I would like to use

from command line to launch a simple Maven project, and so I think I need to configure using «Create Command-line Launcher» the script path, but I cannot find it in Intellij Ultimate, if I search it in File / Settings I can find it, but then if I add a keyboard shortcut it doesn’t work.

Could someone help me?

For Mac OS with +2019 Intellij:

1. You’ll need JetBrains ToolBox
2. Turn on Generate shell scripts (no longer in tools > create command line launcher)
3. Set path to /usr/local/bin/
4. Delete your old executable in /usr/local/bin/
5. Quit and re-launch toolbox

As I said in the comments of the question.

At least when using Idea Community 2019.1 EAP + Jetbrains Toolbox, even in Linux that option is disabled.

You must access the Jetbrains Toolbox->settings (the gear next to the ‘Log in’ button), there will be a «Generate shell scripts» option and location to set. Set a location that you can access without sudo, and put that location on your PATH or copy the generated script to a path like /usr/local/bin.

I needed that to be able to use kscript —idea xxxx.kts (putting this here so that the next person googling that finds the answer 🙂 )

This option is not available on Windows, otherwise you can find it in the Tools menu.

Tools | Create Command-line Launcher (available on Mac/Linux).

If IDE installation is managed by the JetBrains Toolbox, launcher options will not be available in the IDE and you should use Toolbox settings to create a launcher instead.

When installing the 2019.1 IDE version via toolbox, you need first to remove the previously generated Command-Line Launcher (e.g. via Tools | Create Command-line Launcher)

Then Enable the Generate Shell script option ToolBox and specify the same path that was used before (e.g /use/local/bin/)

On Linux, installing IntelliJ IDEA as a snap package automatically creates the command-line launcher named intellij-idea-community or intellij-idea-ultimate . The Tools | Create Command-line Launcher command is therefore not available.

I’m using Jetbrains Toolbox for Mac to update the intellij. After updating to 2019.1, opening any project from command-line opens in old version which is 2018.3.

I don’t find `Tools -> Create command-line Launcher ` anymore in 2019.1, how do i fix this issue?

Jetbrains Toolbox doesn’t allow me to delete old versions (because of rollback option).

Can’t we simply have Jetbrains integrated with the command-line automatically with any install?

it is kind of sad that with each update we have to go to each of the jetbrains products and trigger this via the menu. at least make it a global setting on the toolbox to install all products with this integration

After posting just checked in the toolbox and they have it 😀

In toolbox go to «Settings -> Generate shell scripts» press to activate and set the «Shell script location» to /usr/local/bin or to any other folder wanted

I tried using the Jetbrains toolbox to generate the script, but it’s so buggy. If pycharm is installed, it never creates a script for intellij (idea) (only creates script for pycharm). If i’ve multiple versions of intellij, it doesn’t work. At worst, it deletes the existing /usr./local/bin/idea file.

I have a program launching a website via the following command.

When launching a website via this method it uses the default browser with its default settings for opening a new window. for example, Firefox and IE will open the window inside the tab of an existing window if they are set to do so. I have reports of IE 6 replacing the content of a current opened window with the content of url.com. I’ve tested this and sure enough when IE 6 is set as the default browser and with a current webpage opened the above will replace the content of the opened window with url.com rather than opening a fresh window.

Upon running some tests I see the command listed here:

will consistently open a new window( with Internet Explorer of course) regardless of an existing window being present or not.

Can anyone tell me if I’m missing a silly setting in IE 6 or if there is a way to duplicate the «always open a new window» functionality exhibited by calling iexplore.exe directly, but with calling the user default browser instead.

IE has a setting, located in Tools / Internet options / Advanced / Browsing , called Reuse windows for launching shortcuts , which is checked by default. For IE versions that support tabbed browsing, this option is relevant only when tab browsing is turned off (in fact, IE9 Beta explicitly mentions this). However, since IE6 does not have tabbed browsing, this option does affect opening URLs through the shell (as in your example).

You can just use

Which will launch your default browser and navigate to that site.

And on Mac I’ve using

start chrome https://www.google.com/ or start firefox https://www.google.com/

To open a URL with the default browser, you can execute:

I had issues with URL parameters with the other solutions. However, this one seemed to work correctly.

You can start web pages using command line in any browser typing this command

save it as bat and run it 🙂

Ok, The Windows 10 BatchFile is done works just like I had hoped. First press the windows key and R. Type mmc and Enter. In File Add SnapIn>Got to a specific Website and add it to the list. Press OK in the tab, and on the left side console root menu double click your site. Once it opens Add it to favourites. That should place it in C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\StartMenu\Programs\Windows Administrative Tools. I made a shortcut of this to a folder on the desktop. Right click the Shortcut and view the properties. In the Shortcut tab of the Properties click advanced and check the Run as Administrator. The Start in Location is also on the Shortcuts Tab you can add that to your batch file if you need. The Batch I made is as follows

You need to make a shortcut when you save this as a bat file and in the properties>shortcuts>advanced enable administrator access, can also set a keybind there and change the icon if you like. I probably did not need :Clock. The netstat commands can change to setting a hosted network or anything you want including nothing. Can Canscade websites in 1 mmc console and have more than 1 favourite added into the batch file.

Using a CLI, the easiest way (cross-platform) I’ve found is to use the NPM package https://github.com/sindresorhus/open-cli

npm install —global open-cli

Installing it globally allows running something like open-cli https://unlyed.github.io/next-right-now/ .

You can also install it locally (e.g: in a project) and run npx open-cli https://unlyed.github.io/next-right-now/

Or, using a NPM script (which is how I actually use it): «doc:online»: «open-cli https://unlyed.github.io/next-right-now/»,

Running yarn doc:online will open the webpage, and this works on any platform (windows, mac, linux).
