How to move drivers from one computer to another computer

Although there were vast improvements in automatic driver retrieval with each new version of Windows, in some situations, they need to be installed manually. Below are details on how to find recently downloaded device driver installations and the various ways to move them to another computer.

You cannot copy installed drivers to a new machine; you’ll need fresh drivers. See the next section for details.

Locating downloaded drivers

As we mentioned in our disclaimer, users cannot move drivers that have already been installed from one computer to another. The reason for this issue is that the registry on the new machine won’t have the proper file associations. Essentially, you need to download the installation file, copy it, and then move it to the other computer.

Methods used for transferring drivers

USB thumb drive

If you have a USB thumb drive, it can be the easiest and fastest method to get drivers from one machine to another. If you don’t already have one of these drives, we highly recommend you consider getting one from any local computer retail store. Many grocery stores also have these available.

Moving across the network

If these computers are on the same network, a network share can also be created to move these files from one computer to the other.

Disc or diskette

If you have a computer with a CD or DVD burner, copying the drivers to a disc is a great solution for moving them.

Утилита DISM в Windows 7, 8.1 и 10

Для начала разберем утилиту DISM, встроенную в систему. Для начала создайте на каком-нибудь диске папку, куда будет помещена копия драйверов. Можно создать на внешнем диске, флешке или другом разделе, но несистемном. Название папки не должно иметь проблемы.

Теперь запустим командную строку с повышенными привилегиями. Нажмите правой кнопкой мыши по меню Пуск или сочетание Win+X и выберите пункт, как показано на скриншоте.

В окне строки вводим команду:

dism /online /export-driver /destination:F:\Папка_с_драйверами

F:\Папка_с_драйверами – название папки с драйверами, находящаяся на диске F, у вас может быть другое название папки.

Начнется процесс копирования и, если операция будет успешно завершена, командная строка оповестит вас об этом.

Восстанавливаем драйвера на переустановленной системе

Допустим, вы уже переустановили Windows и заметили, что каких-то драйверов не хватает, тогда открываем диспетчер устройств (попасть туда можно, если нажать Win+X и выбрать нужный пункт) и нажимаем правой кнопкой мыши по устройству без драйвера. Открывается контекстное меню, где выбираем пункт «Обновить драйверы».

Появляется окно, в котором нажимаем вариант «Выполнить поиск драйверов на этом компьютере».

Указываем путь до папки с резервной копией драйверов, для этого нажмите кнопку «Обзор». После указания пути нажимаем «Далее».

Известные программы, которые позволяют автоматически загрузить и установить драйвера тоже имеют возможность создавать бэкапы. В качестве примера можно привести DriverPack Solution.

Программа DriverMax

Скачиваем бесплатную версию программы DriverMax и идем в раздел копий – «Backup». Здесь есть две функции – создание точек восстановления и создание самих копий драйверов в виде архива.

Выбираем там «Create driver backup archive», а потом жмем «Next».

Тут выбираем те устройства, драйвера которых хотим сохранить. Чтобы выбрать все, отмечаем галочку «Select all» справа внизу, потом жмем «Backup».

Чтобы посмотреть, сохранённые драйверы, нажмите по кнопке «Open backup folder». Потом поместите эту папку на внешний носитель или флешку, либо на несистемный раздел.

Восстановление драйверов на переустановленной системе с DriverMax

Чтобы восстановить драйвера нажимаем в программе «Restore» и в этом разделе выбираем пункт «Restore from a previously created backup» и нажимаем кнопку «Next».

Теперь просто нажимаем по кнопке «Load» и указываем путь до архива с драйвера.

Указываем галочки те устройства, в которых необходима установка драйверов. Можно выбрать все, с помощью галочки «Select all». Нажимаем кнопку «Restore».

Программа для работы с драйверами – Auslogics Driver Updater

В этой программе, как и в предыдущей есть две версии – бесплатная и платная. Для создания бэкапа хватит и бесплатной. Открываем программу и слева переходим на вкладку «Резервная копия». Теперь выделяем галочками те пункты устройств, в которых есть драйвера и жмем кнопку «Копировать».

Для сохранения архива нужно перейти на вкладку «Восстановить». Там должна быть строчка с датой создания резервной копии. Напротив, нажимаем по ссылке «Экспорт архива». Выбираем путь, куда будет сохранена копия.

Когда вы сделаете переустановку системы, снова скачайте эту программу и перейдите на вкладку «Восстановить», а потом нажимаем там по кнопке «Импорт архивов». Теперь указываем путь до архива с драйверами.

Файлы загрузятся в окно программы, где вам остается только отметить галочками устройства, драйвера которых необходимо восстановить. А после того нажимаем соответствующую кнопку.

4 Ways to Copy/Transfer/Move Drivers from One Computer to Another on Windows

Can you move drivers from one computer to another? Normally, there are 2 situations in which you need to copy drivers from one computer to another. One is that the computer has no Internet connection and you can’t get drivers, so you have to transfer drivers from one computer to it. The other one is that you do have Internet access but just can’t get some drivers anywhere on the Internet.

Transferring drivers from one PC to another saves you a lot of time. It enables you to install drivers on the computer immediately. There are some risks, however. Some drivers for computer A may not be compatible with computer B, even with the same hardware and the same Windows OS.

To avoid the transferred drivers going wrong and causing corrupts on another computer, you’d better download the correct drivers for the “another computer”. There are only 5 steps to download drivers for another Windows PC. Try to download the correct drivers for another computer first.

There are 4 methods to copy Windows drivers from one computer to another. Try one of them to move drivers to another computer on Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server.

Note: If the computer to which you need to transfer drivers doesn’t have Internet connection, you can try any of the solutions. If both the computers have Internet access, try Solution 4.

Those methods will help to transfer all drivers from one computer to another, including the printer drivers, network drivers, WiFi/wireless drivers, Ethernet drivers, display/graphics drivers, motherboard drivers, Bluetooth drivers, sound/audio drivers, keyboard drivers, mouse drivers, webcam drivers, phone drivers, USB drivers, camera drivers, etc.

Solution 1. Copy Drivers from One Computer to Another with a USB Thumb Drive

If both the computers’ USB ports are working well, using a USB thumb drive (or a USB flash drive) is the easiest and fastest way to shift drivers from one PC to another.

Plug in the USB thumb drive to the computer which has drivers, copy the drivers to the USB thumb drive, and unplug it.

On the computer which has no drivers and which need to install drivers, plug in the USB thumb drive, and copy the drivers from it to the computer.

Then you can start to install drivers. It’s recommended to try Driver Talent to install the transferred drivers. On the “Pre-download” menu, select “Install drivers with downloaded driver files”, click “Next” and follow the easy wizard to complete the installation.

Solution 2. Transfer Drivers from One Computer to Anohter over Network

If both the computers have network, transferring drivers becomes easier. You can use some chat software on both the computers to transfer drivers to and from, or share drivers with public folders, which allows you to copy the drivers onto any computers sharing the same network.

To share drivers and other items in a Public folder over network, click the Start button on your computer, select Network and choose Network and Sharing Center. Turn on Public Folder Sharing.

Try one of the methods on your computers to transfer drivers from one PC to another, including Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Toshiba, IBM, Alienware, Compaq, Gateway, LG, Microsoft, MSI, etc.

Solution 3. Transfer Drivers from One PC to Another with a Disc or Diskette

If you have a CD or DVD disc, or a diskette, you can use it to divert drivers from one PC to another. Like a USB thumb drive, it also works as a container and transfer tool.

Insert the disc into the computer which has drivers, copy the driver to the disc, and take out the disc.

Insert the disc into the computer which has no drivers, and copy the drivers from the disc to the computer.

Use Driver Talent to install drivers on the computer. On the “Pre-download” menu, select “Install drivers with downloaded driver files”, click “Next” and follow the easy wizard to complete the installation.

Solution 4. Move Drivers to Another Computer via a Mobile Phone

Yes, a phone can be used as a USB flash drive or a CD/DVD disc to transfer files, including drivers.

Connect the phone to the computer which has drivers and copy the needed drivers to the phone. Then connect the phone to the computer which has no drivers and move the drivers to it. Use Driver Talent to install the copied drivers.

Copying drivers from another Windows installation [duplicate]

Is it possible to copy the drivers from another Windows installation? I have re-installed my computer only to find that none of the drivers are installed. I have the disk from a previous installation which had the required drivers. Is it possible to copy these drivers across?

You can actually get all the bootcamp drivers right from Apple. Although it says «Update», it appears that the update actually includes everything that’s on the disk. Just grab it off off the Boot Camp Support page.

Copying the drivers will not work — the files are usually spread around, along with registry stuff. So your best bet is to nab them off the internet from a manufacturer.

You can not simply install drivers by copying the files. Installation of a driver involves lots of more complicated steps than just copying files such as creating registry entries, services, event logs, and so on. Simply copying a file tells Windows nothing about the driver.

What you can do, is to copy the individual files as necessary (for example in the dialog below that prompts you for the location of a driver file). That said, the necessary files may not all be in the same place ( %systemroot%\System32\Drivers), and could be in the Program Files folder, %systemroot%\Help`, and basically anywhere else the manufacturer thought its files belonged.

It is best just to use a copy of the original driver installation program, but if you don’t have Internet access or the CD, then maybe a copy of the driver installer has been cached. Look for an executable ( .exe ) or Windows Installer file ( .msi ) in the relevant Program Files folder and \Windows\Installer (perhaps do a file-search depending on the device manufacturer’s name).
