System Error C:\Windows\system32\d2d1.dll
Hi, for about a year now I have been getting this error message ( C:\Windows\system32\d2d1.dll ) for things such as Skype or windows live mail. I have been able to cope with uninstalling skype and not using the mail. However I have just purchased security software in which the message comes up when i need to install the software.
I have previously tried system restores and found nothing to work.

Have you tried an sfc /scannow scan to see if it finds and fixes anything? If not, give it a try.
Do you have the file d2d1.dll at the specified location C:\Windows\system32\ ?

I tried that scan and got this error message Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir% \Logs\CBS\CBS.log.
I have no idea how to fix them on my own or anything. Also I do not know if i have the d2d1 in the correct place, I would not know how to tell.

Try the sfc scan in safe mode and see what that can do.
Just look in explorer (Not Internet explorer) in the C: drive (under computer) then click ‘windows’ then click ‘system32’ and just look in alphabetic order of files.
The instructions on how to find what it thinks is at fault are in the sfc link I gave above. See the ‘For more information’ section. NOTE: Thats just an example for a file called jscript.dll. Admittedly, it can seem a bit tricky.

How does this pertain to Windows Update functionality, Daniel?
What security software are you attempting to install?
What, if any, anti-virus application or security suite is currently installed and when does your current subscription, if any, expire?
Is IE10 or IE11 installed?

Assuming Win7 (64-bit) SP1.
Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply, preferably without quoting my post:
1a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the computer?
1b. Did Win7 64-bit come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it, did you do a clean install of Win7, or did you upgrade the computer to Win7?
2a. When (approx. date) did your McAfee Kaspersky subscription (or free-trial period) expire?
2b. Is the McAfee application installed or.
2c. Are you attempting to install McAfee Antivirus Plus, McAfee Internet Security or McAfee Total Protection?
2d. Have you purchased a new McAfee subscription yet or are you attempting to install a free-trial version?
3. Has any other McAfee application or a Norton application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?
4. Did a McAfee free-trial or a Norton free-trial [PICK ONE] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn’t matter if you never used or Activated it.)
5a. Is KB2909921, KB2916036, KB2909212 (if IE8 is installed) or KB2909210 (if IE10 or IE11 is installed) and/or KB2912390 listed in Installed Updates (not Update History)? [1]
5b. How about KB2898785, KB2913602, KB2893294, KB2892074 and/or KB2887069?
6. Assuming Java is installed => Is Java Version 7 Update 51 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
7. Is Adobe Flash Player v12.0.0.70 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
8a. Is Internet Explorer 8 (IE8), IE9, IE10 or IE11 installed?
8b. Is Firefox or any other alternate browser installed other than Chrome?
9. Are you in the habit of using «Registry cleaners» (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; PC Doctor; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; Comodo System Cleaner; Advanced System Optimizer; CCleaner Registry Cleaner)?

1. Have you uninstalled the Kaspersky application?
2. What’s the full name of the McAfee application you’ve purchased (i.e., McAfee Antivirus Plus, McAfee Internet Security or McAfee Total Protection)?
3a. Had your original (first) McAfee subscription (or free-trial period) already expired by the time you installed the Kaspersky application?
3b. Did you (a) uninstall the original (first) McAfee application AND THEN (b) download/run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool & reboot (c) BEFORE you installed the Kaspersky application?
- Fact: McAfee (and Norton) applications are notorious for not uninstalling (or upgrading) cleanly.
5. Open/click on Start | Control Panel | Programs and Features | Turn Windows features on or off: Is Internet Explorer 8, Internet Explorer 9, Internet Explorer 10 or Internet Explorer 11 listed here?
6. Is KB2888505, KB2879017, KB2870699, KB2862772 or KB2846071 listed in Installed Updates?
- Chances are you’re seeing the effects of an ongoing & longstanding «hijackware infection.»
