FreeBSD

darktable is available in the FreeBSD Ports Collection. It can be installed, pre-compiled, from the standard package repository.

• Download the latest Windows installer for darktable.
• Run it and install darktable.

macOS

• Download the latest DMG disk image for darktable
• Mount the thing
• Pull the darktable icon into applications folder

This bundle supports macOS versions starting with 10.7 (Lion) running on 64 bit Intel architecture.

What to do with dialog saying “darktable” can’t be opened because it was not downloaded from the Mac App Store:

• Locate darktable in Applications folder (or wherever you installed it) using Finder
• Do “Open” via context menu
• You will be presented with similar-looking dialog, but this time there will be second button allowing you to run the application
• After that you will be able to start darktable without this trick (well, until you update it, then you will have to do above steps again)

or you can prevent this from happening by running xattr -d com.apple.quarantine

/Downloads/darktable*.dmg command before mounting the image (or xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/darktable.app after installing).

Prerequisites

• *nix (tested: Debian, Ubuntu, Arch Linux, Funtoo, Gentoo, Fedora, Macintosh OS X with Macports)
• We strongly recommend using a 64bit operating system!
• Required packages: libsqlite3, libjpeg, libpng, libpugixml, rawspeed (supplied), gtk+-3, cairo, lcms2, exiv2, tiff, curl, gphoto2, dbus-glib, fop, openexr, libsoup2.4
• Required: gcc >= 5.0

Current release from source

• Grab the latest source tarball (recent version: darktable 3.4.1) – make sure to use the .tar.xz file and not the auto generated .zip or .tar.gz!
• Install the dependencies. For details see the link below.

git version

First a word of warning: Using the development version of darktable might be risky in that it can break anytime, kill your edits, eat your kittens or do other nasty things. It is also not guaranteed that XMP sidecars written by a development version will work with a release version. It is also quite certain that any older version of darktable will NOT be able to read the database once a development build updated it to the latest schema. So for your own safety and our sanity, do make backups of your XMP files as well as your library.db and data.db (by default it is in

/.config/darktable/ ) BEFORE upgrading to the self compiled git version. That being said, it should be quite safe to actually use it and never go back, so all of this might be no issue for you at all. Just keep in mind that IF you ever want to go back it might be hard.

Darktable for PC is an open source photography workflow application and RAW developer. A virtual lighttable and darkroom for photographers. It manages your digital negatives in a database, lets you view them through a zoomable lighttable and enables you to develop raw images and enhance them.

Raw is the unprocessed capture straight from the camera’s sensor to the memory card, nothing has been altered. There are multiple alternatives in the open-source world for raw development (ufraw, dcraw, rawtherapee) but Darktable tries to fill the gap between the excellent existing free raw converters and image management tools (such as e.g. ufraw, rawstudio, f-spot, digikam, shotwell). It focuses on the workflow to make it easier for the photographer to quickly handle the thousands of images a day of shooting can produce. It’s also one of the very few FOSS projects able to do tethered shooting.

The internal architecture of Darktable allows users to easily add modules for all sorts of image processing, from the very simple (crop, exposure, spot removal) to the most advanced (simulation of human night vision).

The user interface is built around efficient caching of image metadata and mipmaps, all stored in a database. The main focus lies on user interaction, both in terms of smooth interface design as well as processing speed. The high-quality output is also one of the goals.

All photo editing is fully non-destructive and only operates on cached image buffers for display. The full image is only converted during export. Raw image loading is done using rawspeed, high-dynamic range, and standard image formats such as jpeg are also supported. The core operates completely on floating-point values, so Dark table for Windows can not only be used for photography but also for scientifically acquired images or output of renderers (high dynamic range).

Огромная функциональность программы похожа по возможностям с Adobe Lightroom, но в данном случае утилита бесплатна, довольно проста и удобна в применении. И да, создатели намекнули, что название утилиты пишется с маленькой буквы, и никак иначе.

Возможности

Изначально прога не работала на Windows, а профессиональные фотографы пользовались ею на Linux, но с недавних пор обновлённая версия стала доступна на всех операционных системах. Сами разработчики признаются, что в darktable есть недоработки, такие как поддержка печати, а также находятся мелкие баги. В целом, с их слов, приложение работоспособно имеет место быть на рабочем столе дизайнеров и любителей фотографировать.

Процесс редактирования производится только с буферами изображения. Сами изменения снимок приобретает на последнем этапе. Благодаря приложению, с изображениями можно проводить различного рода операции, включая обрезку, поворот, подсветку, инвертирование, баланс белого. Также к дополнительным функциям можно отнести:

• Повышение резкости и удаление пятен.
• Шумоподавление и канальное микширование.
• Установка рамки и осветление теней.

Совсем недавно разработчики обновили darktable до версии 3.0.0. Теперь пользователям доступны 8 разных тем, а каждый пользователь может выбрать подходящее окружение для себя. Здесь можно устроить слайд-шоу или же съёмку с присоединённой камерой. Darktable работает стабильно и не зависает во время работы, как на Windows, так и на macOS.
