Day One Classic — хорошо зарекомендовавший себя личный дневник, с возможностью добавить фотографии, геопозиции, присвоить теги записям и многое другое.

Дневники принципиально отличаются от программ по созданию заметок. На первом месте стоит удобство и комфорт при работе с приложением. Здесь к Day One очень сложно придраться, программа вылизана, но ещё есть над чем поработать.

Здесь стоит отметить, что я не совсем стандартно веду дневник. Мы делим один аккаунт с супругой, на её и на моем телефонах.

Вместе добавляем фотографии ребенка, смешные фразы, фотографии из интересных мест, делимся интересными мыслями, записываем сны и т.д.

Автоматическое обновление заметок на всех устройствах делает ведение общего дневника очень приятным занятием. А главное, результат, которым довольны на 100%.

Как вести личный дневник?

У каждого есть мысли, с которыми не готов поделиться с близкими людьми. Не то, чтобы я что-то скрываю, но сомневаюсь, что бессознательный бред будет интересно читать. У вашего партнера может сложиться плохое мнение про вас 🙂

Не буду продолжать, перейду к ответу на вопрос «Как вести личный дневник?». Раньше я использовал второе приложение — дневник Momento, включив цифровой пароль на доступ.

Но теперь появился ещё один хороший дневник — Day One Classic. Это первая версия Day One, можно установить обе версии и они прекрасно работают совместно. База заметок будет раздельной, что мне и требуется. Для OS X можно так же использовать обе версии программы, но эта опция доступна тем, кто ранее уже покупал Day One.

Приложения разнес на разные экраны, совершенно не напрягает, что иконки почти одинаковые.

В феврале вышла долгожданная версия дневника Day One 2. Ребята из Bloom Built выпустили сразу две версии, для iOS и OS X.

Версия 2.0

Вторая версия была переписана основательно, но именно этих двух нововведений пользователи и ждали:

• возможность добавить до 10 фотографий к заметке;
• поддержка нескольких дневников.

Автоматизация дневника в Day One

Day One поддерживает автоматизацию работы с заметками как на iOS, так и на OS X.

X-URL-SCHEME

Схемы работают на iOS, удобнее всего добавлять шаблонные записи через приложения Launch Center Pro или Workflow. На сайте Day One есть раздел с ссылками на множество примеров использования.

Ещё один раздел на сайте Day One. Через утилиту dayone , в терминале, я добавил много событий из прошлого, синтаксис команды очень прост и описан в инструкции.

Does what it says on the tin!

As someone a little too focused on productivity and self-realization tools, I’ve tried a lot of ways of journaling, blogging, publishing, and keeping it to myself. Day One is nice and clean — it’s pretty full-featured, but also lets you turn off, or even better, ignore, features that you don’t want. I’m appreciating being able to write in Markdown, but not having to, as that’s my mode in several wikis that I use for work.

Several years and several versions in, I’m really appreciating the line that Day One walks. It has a lot of features, but they don’t get in the way of my fairly simple use. And yet, every few months, I find some feature that helps me write more consistently, more quickly, or expand what I’m writing. The latest discovery was coming to understand the different views, and how satisfying it is to see a long streak in the calendar view. I’d only used timeline view before, but when I looked at the calendar — boom! Easy to use and it helps me write more.

I bought Day One (Classic) and wasn’t sure about the upgrade for a while. The new interface is a little more intuitive, and some of the new features are nice. I like multiple images, and I like having the “a year ago” feature without the data being in someone else’s—FB’s—control. I’m not keen on the switch to subscription, but as a developer I understand the tension between ongoing improvements and one-time purchases. The overall cost is still impressively low!

Five Years Deep, Still Five Stars

I instantly thought it was the best when the app was first released some five years ago. Five years later, it is still the reigning champ in the world of journaling. Flexible, powerful, uncluttered user experience, great customer service, reliable and constantly tweeked and improved to make it better- these are all the reasons this is worth your money. I definitely don’t prefer the subscription model that is emerging as the app industry-standard, but that’s not necessarily Day One’s problem. I get it- you’ve got to figure out a way to keep the lights on in a fiercly competitive industry, but still, I clearly realize that this is a way to make more money off of me for a longer amount of time. As a consumer I would much rather pay a one time fee and own the app and it’s features out-right without having to use a slice of my monthly disposable income on an ongoing subscription. But alas it appears that this is where the industry is headed and nobody really cares what a Joe Shmoe like me thinks. But I seriously love Day One- get it now! And if it doesn’t have a feature to address your super obscure need that literally no one else needs or wants, please don’t get all bent out of shape and leave them a one star review. Also, if you’re going to leave them a one star review at least have the class to punctuate your tasteless review. Nothing says intelligence like a paragraph without periods.

For a person who doesn’t journal I blame this app for changing me.

I’m always told to write it down it will help in coping with issues of life or when you keep forgetting things. I had tried to work with those old composition books as they have been easy and cheap. I spent times writing and times not writing. I find that working with this older method works for some people but its doesn’t 100% work for me. I came across Day One by accident as I was looking for a good txt editor for my old Macbook pro. When I did my search I found a lot but noting that interest me. It wasn’t until I came across the Day One app and started to read over what it was. It was completly diffrent then what I was looking for but it was something that was diffrent then those old composition books a friend suggested I work with. On the technology spectrum I fall in a very rare group as I’m older then most when it comes to being tech savy but when I started using Day One I was kinda of blown away at how easy it was just to have items flow from my head onto the app. It wasn’t about writing with a keyboard over a pencil. It was just easy to get the thoughts from my head onto something I can save, review, and if something should happen a closing txt of what’s been on my mind for a while. I would highly recommend this app as my title points out I’m a person who doesn’t Journal until now.

The best writing app for my needs!

I have this app synced across my laptop, ipad, and phone, and it works flawlessly. I’ve been using it for a couple years now. I have tested the other similar writing apps, and for me this one wins out & is so enjoyable to use. No entries have ever been lost for me, even though I accidentally made two logins when initially setting up, and had entries and journals on both. Online instructions helped a ton in merging the accounts, and tech support is fast, friendly, and very helpful. Could not be happier!

Not Real Markdown

I actually understand the subscription pricing, and I get why they need it. They are continually making updates and squashing bugs. Servers cost money, and they want to be able to sustain the application over the long term. I want that too. However, they neutered Markdown, and this weird hybrid is annoying as hell. I don’t understand why they don’t just stick to having actual full markdown as an option, and just make it a toggle. Make line breaks behave properly for those us who actually use Markdown, and don’t burden everyone else with the half butted application.

I thought after waiting nearly two years for End-to-End encryption I could finally move my 700+ journal entries over to DayOne 2 and enjoy multiple journals and multiple pictures. Their proprietary syncing option is much faster than the previous version and with end-to-end, you can at least trust they’re not snopping on you.

I understand why they removed 3rd party sync — iCloud is a pain to program complex files for, and adding end-to-end encryption through someone else’s sync is a daunting, if not impossible task.

HOWEVER — they changed how they handle markdown, and my 700+ entries formatting is all screwed up. I thought it was a bug, so I sent in a note. I was told:

«Thanks for contacting us and sorry for the troubles you’re experiencing. I’ll do my best to help you. We changed Markdown editors and web views in Day One 2.0 and that probably caused the issue. Unfortunately I do not have an adequate solution. «

They changed the fundamental behaviour of line breaks, (something which drastically changes how your paragraphs are displayed), with zero mention of it. I now have over 700 entries that need reformatting. That’s thousands of paragraphs that need fixing. The explanation I was given:

«It is a development and design choice.»

That’s a really big change to toss at your users with no method for an easy fix, with no actual explanation for why. And it’s that lack of rationale that leaves me in the difficult position of having to recommend users stay away from DayOne. If I can’t trust that my journals aren’t going to be safe going forward, that «design & development» choices are going to unecessarily create work for me, then I can’t trust the developer. Period.

I need to be able to trust that my journals are going to be readable down the line, and not going to require maintenance everytime there’s an update. The goodwilll from the original DayOne has run out.

DO NOT BUY!

I’ve been using this app for years but over the last yeat — ever since they went to v2.0 — I’ve had nothing but problems. I run it on a new MacBook Pro, an iPhone 6 and an iPad 4. Entries take forever to sync when I write them on the iPad, but I put it down to the old hardware. But lately, I’ve entered text in the desktop version, clicked DONE and watched my text disappear. Sometimes it comes back, but lately it hasn’t.

And it seems to be getting worse — the disappearing text trick happened yesterday and then again today! I’ve contacted the Support team more than once and gotten absolutely nowhere.

I shall be migrating all my data (5 years worth!) to another app.
