Defense Grid: The Awakening is a unique spin on defense gameplay that will appeal to players of all skill levels. A horde of enemies is invading, and it’s up to the player to stop them by strategically building fortification towers around their base. Beautiful environments, spectacular effects, and a dynamic, engaging soundtrack bring the world to life. The controls are intuitive and the gameplay is deep — the special attacks and properties of each tower work together to provide many ways to succeed.

High Replayability. There are approximately 8 hours of gameplay in the main storyline, and many hours of play in challenge modes that give players unique starting conditions and objectives. Each game level is very replayable, and can be solved in many different ways, with increasing rewards for improved efficiency.

Wide Variety of Enemies. Over the course of the game, players battle 15 different enemy types that become increasingly stronger, and employ a variety of strategies in an attempt to bypass the player’s defenses. As the levels progress, the enemies become tougher and more difficult to defeat.

20 Unique Levels. Defense Grid: The Awakening has 20 unique environments, each with a different placement of roads, tower build locations, and open areas to plan a strategy around.

Numerous Tower Options and Upgrades. There are 10 different tower types with 3 levels of capability each. Each tower has unique trade offs that affect ideal placement, such as line-of-sight attack or ballistic trajectory fire. Some towers improve other nearby towers, and some are ideal at specific locations, such as a rear guard tower that unleashes a devastating attack.

Achievements. Successfully completing each level provides a bronze achievement award. Additional goals provide silver and gold awards for a particular level. A novice player may be able to survive the onslaught, but only an experienced player will be able to get all of the gold achievements.

Defense Grid comes with twenty different environments, each one with its own map layout, road, tower build location and open area placement. You can build and upgrade ten powerful tower types that offer three levels of capability. You have to place all your towers according to their characteristics. The line-of-sight attack and ballistic trajectory fire are just a few of the properties that you need to consider while placing a tower.

For every successfully complete level you can receive a bronze achievement award. However, you can complete additional goals in order to grab the silver and gold awards. Try to survive the incoming hordes of aliens or prove your gaming skills by dominating the maps and crushing your enemies.

Defense Grid: The Awakening Comes to Mac OS X

Virtual Programming has announced it will be bringing Defense Grid: The Awakening (DG:TA) to Mac OS X. The tower defense strategy game has the player defending planet Earth from wave after wave of aliens, re-activating an ancient defense grid with 10 different towers in the process.

GD:TA has 20 different maps, and the company says it offers 8-10 hours of gameplay. There are 15 different variants of the invading aliens, and the different towers force the player to learn new ways to defend against the enemy.

According to the company, the players’ goal is to prevent the aliens from stealing precious power cores; if the invaders succeed, the game ends. Resources gained from killing enemies can be used to buy more towers, as well as upgrade existing ones with more powerful attacks and a longer range of fire.

Successful defense of the power cores also lets players unlock over 60 challenge modes that offer many more hours of gameplay. Players can show off their skills by completing a wide variety of achievements and posting their high scores on the game’s online leader boards.

The game is available now through Virtual Programming’s Deliver2Mac digital download service. It is priced at US$24.95, €19.95, or £19.95.

System requirements call for: Mac OS X version 10.5.8 an Intel processor, 1GB RAM, a 128MB video card (GeForce 7300, Radeon X1600 or newer), 1.1GB of hard disk space, and an Internet connection for product registration.

i don’t know if this is of any help — (Non Mac User here)

«Most games save their data to:

MacIntosh HD/Users/your user name/Library/Application Support/Name of the game

It should be in a folder that’s the same name as the game. «

/Library/Application Support/Steam contains many directories with database-style files and config files, none of which are specific to Defense Grid, and there’s no Application Support/Defense Grid directory. Steam really needs to let us know the right place so we’re not guessing in the dark.

It would be Interesting to know if Mac uses the same Files dgarchitect compiles for PC

Sorry for the delayed response, our team was out for a holiday break. Yes, Macs can play custom maps, but the tool to create them is Windows only.

On non-Windows platforms (Mac and Linux) it looks like the user can put the custom maps in their Steam/userdata folder.

On Windows it’s something like: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\ \221540\local

On Mac it’s likely to be something like /users/ /Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata/ /221540/local

This definitely appears to be the right location (once you create a DG2 folder inside the above path), BUT as soon as I put any downloaded maps into that folder, DG2 crashes immediately upon start-up with «Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)». I can provide a full crash dump if desired. If I delete the custom maps from that folder, DG2 starts up fine.

I am not able to load any custom maps from dg2freemaps.com on the Mac, they do not appear in the Local Section on the Custom maps.

For example I placed Mayan_Temple_4 in the folder: /users//Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata//221540/local/Mayan_Temple_4 Within the Mayan_Temple_4 folder were the files: contents.rad, Mayan_temple_4.dgwbin, Mayan_Temple_4.missionbin

The Mayan Temple 4 map did not appear.

So then I created a DG2 folder inside the local folder as greendog99 mentioned and placed Mayan_Temple_4 inside the DG2 folder (221540/local/DG2/Mayan_Temple_4), then Defense Grid 2 crashed on startup.
