Ubuntu 18.04 | No Wi-Fi Adapter found | Dell Vostro 5490

Ubuntu cannot detect the Wi-Fi adapter on my laptop, but bluetooth and ethernet connections work. Ethernet, Wi-Fi and bluetooth connections work using Win10.

I disabled Secure Boot in BIOS (as mentioned in another thread), but that did not fix the issue. I confirmed WLAN setting is enabled in BIOS.

Any other suggestions to try to get wifi working?

I followed the steps in the dell support article mentioned in the previous post, here are my conclusions:
Regarding Troubleshooting Hardware steps, 1) I don’t see the Wi-Fi adapter using the Ubuntu Live Media 2) I don’t have another machine to try the wifi card with to confirm the status of it.
Regarding Troubleshooting Software steps, when I run the command sudo lshw -c network , I get the following output. It seems that the wi-fi hardware is found, but it’s not recognized as a Wi-Fi adapter. I stopped at this point.

I have been using Linux Mint 9 for about a year with no problems, but I’m still a n00b so bear with me, and don’t assume that I will understand what’s going on with all of these terminal commands.

Last week my computer crashed (would not boot) so I reinstalled Linux Mint 9. No WiFi. WiFi was working perfectly at the time of the crash.

My Dell Vostro 1000 has no hard switch, it uses Fn+F2 to turn WiFi on and off, but that combination does nothing.

Oh, well. I saw that Linux Mint 11 is available so I installed that. After booting the first time — No WiFi. But I noticed an icon and when I clicked on it, it installed the Broadcom driver. Still no WiFi.

If I go to Menu>>Administration>>Additional Driver I can see the driver there for my BCM4311 and that it’s activated and in use. I’ve also tried removing it and activating it again, and rebooting. Nothing.

When I click the network connections icon at the lower right is shows «Wired Network» but not «Wireless Networks».

I’ve searching forums for a few days and so far nothing I have found has worked. Here’s what I have:

I opened the file NetworkManager.state and it looks like this:

Купил вчера себе ноут vostro 1015. На нем была установлена Ubuntu 8.10, на нем wi-fi работал отлично. Установил потом себе opensuse 11.2 и wi-fi не определяется даже и лампочка на корпусе не горит. Хотя только что в ясте в пункте оборудование смотрел, там устройство wi-fi определено нормально. Кто может подсказать в чем проблема?

Какой именно дистрибьютив OpenSuse 11.2 ставили? Т.е полный или Live CD?
Графическая среда KDE or GNOME?
Каким образом пытались настроить соединение через yast или networkmanager?

opensuse 11.2 i686 dvd
kde 4.3.5
сначала через нетворкменеджер, но у него вкладка «беспроводные» серая, потом переключился через яст, но там только ethernet карточка, беспроводной тоже нет

сетевая карта какая? попробуй поставить из репозиториев всё что связано с вайфай.

тут есть общая кнопка для вайфай и блутус, когда ее нажимаю блутус загорается, а вайфай нет.
сейчас попробую что то поставить.

скорее всего у тебя бродкомовский чип, который не оживает пока ОС ему прошивку не зальёт. Для линуха уже должен быть драйвер с поддержкой этого уродского чипа. Надо только точно знать что у тебя там.
Сам сижу на востро 1400, долгое время была проблема с ви-фи, пока не вышел драйвер.

так раз на убунте работало, то значит драйвер есть. вот только как его сдесь поставить.

а как посмотреть какой у меня чип?

в спецификации на железку посмотри, возможно что на обороте ноута написано. Можно ливе-сд убунты загрузить и посмотреть.
Вполне допускаю ситуацию что предустановка убунты на заводе включала в себя и заливку дров.

Loky, спасибо Вам за подсказку насчет бродкомовского чипа. Я поставил драйвер ви-фи для чипов бродкома и сейчас ви-фи работает.
Тему можно закрыть, еще раз спасибо за отклик.

Но есть 2 проблемы не работает wi-fi через менеджер драйверов ставил автоматом, ставил драйвера через терминал » sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree » скачивал ещё какие то драйвера ставил,драйвера ставятся,но wi-fi не работает и лампочка сигнализирующая о работе вай фай тоже не светиться на кнопки включения fn f2 не реагирует через кабель интернет работает в чем может быть проблема?нужно искать другой дист линукса?

вторая проблема в том что ноут не выключается просто виснет на значке линукс на закрытие крышки реагирует уходит в ждущий режим,можно выключить только через кнопку.

Dell Vostro 1520 wifi not working with Ubuntu 12.04

I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 on Dell Vostro 1520 Laptop. But found Wifi is hardware locked, though wifi is working perfectly fine with Windows 7 in the same laptop.

I tried to upgrade the drivers as mentioned in other posts/forums but could not resolve the issue.

I had the similar problem with versions 11.* as well. Last time the Wifi worked with 10.* version.

Please help me to get it resolved.

I have a Vostro 1520 on which I just upgraded to 12.04. Even though my wifi was working on 10.04, I have to re-do what I’ve done on 10.04. Here it is:

At this point, wireless indicator will light up and after a while, you’ll be able to connect to the available wi-fi access points. However, the dell_laptop kernel module will get loaded again on bootup and hence, the fix is not permanent. Let’s make it so:

Wireless should be working fine from now on.

It did on my laptop.

I had a hard time making the WiFi work after installing Ubuntu 12.10 on Dell XPS. Running rfkill list all always returned:

After trying almost everyone of the tons of suggestions about this problem on the Ubuntu forums, and none of them worked form, I simply tried Fn + F2 (the F2 key has the WiFi sign) and the problem disappeared.

The simple solution (unless you have a deeper problem) is Fn + F2 (or whatever key with the WiFi sign).

I also faced the same problem when upgraded to 11.10. I tried the auto updating using the hard line -ethernet cable — , but didn’t work. After some research I finally made it. In the end, these commands made my day.

To make this work, your must be connected to Internet, so use LAN cable.
