Before you start

Before changing settings for your external displays, make sure everything is connected properly. Here’s what you can do:

Make sure your cables are properly connected to your PC or dock.

Check for Windows updates. To check for updates, select Start > Settings > Updates & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.

Tip: If you’re using a wireless display adapter, connect to an HDMI port on newer TVs, then wirelessly connect your PC to it. After connecting your wireless display adapter to your TV, go to your Windows 10 PC and select Start > Settings > System > Display, then select Connect to a wireless display.

Rearrange your displays

You’ll see this option when Windows detects more than one display. Each display will be numbered to help you identify them more easily.

Identify a display

To see which number corresponds to a display, select Start > Settings > System > Display > Rearrange your displays, then select Identify. A number appears on the screen of the display it’s assigned to.

Detect a display

If you connected another display and it isn’t showing in Settings, select Start > Settings > System > Display > Rearrange your displays, then select Detect.

Arrange your displays

If you have multiple displays, you can change how they’re arranged. This is helpful if you want your displays to match how they’re set up in your home or office. In Display settings, select and drag the display to where you want. Do this with all the displays you want to move. When you’re happy with the layout, select Apply. Test your new layout by moving your mouse pointer across the different displays to make sure it works like you expect.

Change display options

After you’re connected to your external displays, you can change settings like your resolution, screen layout, and more. To see available options, select Start > Settings > System > Display.

Change orientation

Windows will recommend an orientation for your screen. To change it in Display settings, go to Scale and Layout, then choose your preferred Display orientation. If you change the orientation of a monitor, you’ll also need to physically rotate the screen. For example, you’d rotate your external display to use it in portrait instead of landscape.

Choose a display option

To change what shows on your displays, press Windows logo key + P. Here’s what you can choose.

See things on one display only.

See the same thing on all your displays.

See your desktop across multiple screens. When you have displays extended, you can move items between the two screens.

When I display com lpt ports in Device Manager, it shows me Com4 and Com5, where do I look for Com1,2,3. I am running Windows 8 Pro on a 64bit Compaq PC.

I am having difficulty Hot Syncing my Palm IIIc (yes I know, this is dinosaur technology:)). I userd to used Com1 or Com3. When I go into the Hotsync settings it gives me the option of Com3,4,or5. No matter which port I choose it does not connect. I don’t understand why it does not give me the option of Com1 or 2.

This could be due to the fact that the COM ports are being used by some other process or devices.

a) Type cmd on the Start screen and right click on Command Prompt. Select Run as administrator.

b) Type “set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1″ without the quotes. Hit Enter.

c) Type “start devmgmt.msc” without quotes and hit Enter.

d) Seelct “Show hidden devices” under View menu.

Now if you expand the section on COM ports, all the COM ports that have ever been created will be displayed, the non present ones being in grey. You can uninstall anything that you don’t want (right click on each device icon and select uninstall).

Please assist me with the following information related to this issue:

1) Have you connected any other device such as a printer to the computer?

I do have a printer but it is hooked up to a usb port. The only device connected to a serial port is the Palm cradle.

2) Did you make any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

I had a major problem with my pc and contacted Microsoft Support. They had delete my user profile and set up a new one, this was on July 4th.

Let’s check if the devices using the COM ports are hidden and check if it helps to find the other ports as well.

I followed you directions above, when I started device manger using devmgmt.msc, it was the same as before following your instructions. It still only shows com4 anf 5.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Command line for looking at specific port

Is there a way to examine the status of a specific port from the Windows command line? I know I can use netstat to examine all ports but netstat is slow and looking at a specific port probably isn’t.

Here is the easy solution of port finding.

You can use the netstat combined with the -np flags and a pipe to the find or findstr commands.

Basic Usage is as such:

So for example to check port 80 on TCP, you can do this: netstat -np TCP | find «80» Which ends up giving the following kind of output:

As you can see, this only shows the connections on port 80 for the TCP protocol.

here o represents process ID. now you can do whatever with the process ID. To terminate the process, for e.g., use:

3068 is PID, so I can find it from task manager and stop that process.

In the find string you must include the colon, as the port qualifier, otherwise the number may match either local or foreign addresses.

You can further narrow narrow the search using other netstat switches as necessary.

Display all open ports on your network using PortScan for Windows

Ports are used for communication in computing. It would go too far to describe the technical details involved but you can think of ports as doors that allow interaction with a device.

Common ports are TCP port 21 ftp, port 23 for Telnet or port 80 for the hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP).

While it makes sense to keep certain ports open on your system, as you would not be able to use services associated with them otherwise, it is usually a good idea to make sure only ports that you require are open.

Ports can reveal information about services running on a device for example and when they are open, may allow connections to it by third-parties.

PortScan is a free portable program for Windows that scans a network range for devices and displays all open ports of each device that it finds.

Tip : To find out the IP address of the device you are using press Windows, type cmd.exe, hit enter, type ipconfig and check the IPv4 address of the adapter listed there.

The program scans common ports by default only which you can change under scan type. The two other options provided are to define a start and end range for the device scan and whether you want SMB Shares to be checked as well.

The scan is fast and results appear in the interface after a moment. Each device is listed with its IP address and hostname. A click on it displays additional information that include the device’s Mac address and all open ports detected during the scan.

The result depends largely on the services running on the system.

What’s next

One purpose of PortScan is to check for open ports to verify if they are required. It is good for security if you close all open ports that are not required.

One example: Port 554 RTSP is used by the Real Time Streaming Protocol that Windows Media uses for streaming services. If you don’t use Windows Media for that, there is no need to keep the port open.

Closing ports requires that you know which service or program is responsible for it. Unless you are really knowledgeable about ports, that means research on the Internet or trial and error to find out about it.

In the case of port 554, the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service was responsible and disabling the service closed the port on the system.

Some ports, especially those with five digits, may be used randomly by programs. If you run uTorrent for example, you will notice lots of ports opening up and closing down regularly.

Closing Words

PortScan displays all open ports of computer devices connected to the computer network. It is fast and efficient in doing so and its approach differs from programs like CurrPorts which display apps and processes connected to the Internet. It is an ideal companion app for CurrPorts and since both are portable, well placed on a troubleshooting DVD or USB device.
