In order to check the update status of your operating system and, if available, to install the latest update packs, we need to begin this process manually.

Depending on which Windows version you use, manual update processes are different. Because of this, we have prepared a special article for each Windows version. You can get our articles relating to the manual update of the Windows version you use from the links below.

    Question

I am attempting to add DNS services to an existing Windows Server 2003 system. When I try to do so it wants a file «DNSMGR.DLL» from the service pack 2 CD. The Service Pack 2 came as a executable and as such the files are not visible. How do I find the file needed to install the DNS Server function?

Thanks in advance for any help offered!

sounds like its looking for the windows install disk, not just the SP installer.

Do you have that handy? browse to i386 foler on the install disk your dll should be there.

Perhaps this will help or extract service pack to locally before attempting to install DNS and reference that location.

    here is the configuration:

In the D: diver (the CD) I have the following directory:

——from a command prompt I enter

    expand WINDOWSSERVER2003-KB914961-SP2-X86-ENU.EXE c:\w2ksp2

and I get an empty directory

I’ve tried a number of variations using the switches with no luck.

how do you recommend i proceed?

This is probably not the most efficient way, sorry for brevity.

    When prompted, specify C:\Win2k3SP2

    expand.exe C:\Win2k3SP2\i386\dnsmgr.dl_ C:\Win2k3SP2\i386\dnsmgr.dll

Likely will need to do this for each file that DNS needs.

    I get «unrecognized switch -x»

Is there another version of expand?

    Thanks for the response.

It seems to want the SP2 version.

It keeps asking for the Windows Server 2003 SP2 CD1 disk.

I am having the same exact problem. Only difference is that I am trying to install the DNS role on a virtual instance of Server 2003. My system properties tell me that my copy of Windows Server is currently SP2. It keeps asking me for the SP1 CD1 whenever I try to add the role for DNS. I am trying to create a McAfee ePO server for an exercise at work and will not e able to if I cannot promote a DNS server on my domain controller.

The copy of Server 2003 came from a thumb drive that contained the .iso file from a coworker and he pulled it from our servers where we keep all of our applications. Nobody seems ot have seen this error before. I’m wonderign should I just go ahead and attempt to uninstall and reinstall my copy of Server 2003 or should I look for a workaround or something. I’m terribly baffled by this. Any ideas?

Tenía el mismo problema. Lo solucione de esta manera

    1 Download Center/Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 for x64 Editions http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=10018
