TL; DR:

Many makers of sound cards use «High Definition» in the model name. It’s basically meaningless. Purely a marketing term stolen from HD video. Many people have these cards and then play almost nothing but mp3 files. And mp3 is definitely not high definition.

This ain’t windows. It’s not just about downloading drivers. Does your audio card work? What’s the issue here?

What type if audio are you talking about? If you want true high res audio that would mean more bit depth than CD, eg. 24/96 or 24/192. Though I don’t see the point of 24 bit audio . it’s been convincingly shown you can’t actually tell the difference between redbook and 24/96 . but others want it.

Yes, my audio card works. I was looking for a way to improve the quality of the sound.
Under windows, sounds seem 3d ish. in other words, it feels like surrounded sound, but under Ubuntu sounds seem like 2d ish.. it’s just so linear.
Any solution for that?

Actually, I understand what you mean. The «3D» you are hearing in windows is probably audio compression and processing by Windows and/or the Dolby (Sound Room?) software. If I recall, the Dolby software also lets you move the EQ around to tweak the sound further. While some apps like VLC Media Player do provide sound compressor/spatializer/EQ capabilities — like you I was looking for software to do this at the system level. Unfortunately I haven’t found a way to do this. However, something you might check out is PulseAudio Multiband EQ. It’s no longer actively supported — but many people including myself think it works pretty good and gives you some control over the «feel» of your sound output. It doesn’t provide compressor/spatializer capability — but you can at least shape your sound a little better. To install:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alex-wv/pulseaudio-equalizer-ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install pulseaudio-equalizer

В общем, долгое время я жил с виндой, а на виртуалке был линукс. Все бы ничего, но надоело. Хочу полностью перейти на линукс, но есть одно «но» — Dolby Home Theater v4 (кто не знает, то это самый прекрасный программный эквалайзер и вообще обработчик звука). Без него желание слушать музыку в наушниках с ноутбука просто пропадает. Купить внешнюю звуковую карту пока нет возможности. Хочу попробовать натянуть его на линукс (не важно как, хоть на виртуалку с виндой в линуксе, что, как оказалось, не так и просто), но как-то оно не очень получается. Я погуглил — никто толком не занимался этой проблемой. Потому прошу помощи у опытных линуксоидов помощи в этом нелегком деле и предельно понятного наставления на пути поиска решений! (можно низкоуровневых, типа: перепиши драйвера. но тогда с подробностями, плз)

I did a search and can find no evidence whatsoever that Dolby supports Linux at all. This link is often pointed to:

Note the title of that section is «Linux low audio quality», which isn’t necessarily the case. I use a simple ISO compliant USB DAC and it’s fine. But it’s not unusual in Linux for some features of DACs to not work at all even if the basic stuff does.

Looks like there is a variety of compression, eq and psudo surround sound going on with that dolby processing.

1) Difficult fix
You might get something like this working for overall system eq :

I had it working on mint 17.3 but ran into some problems on 18, but I think that might have been fixed now. Make sure you back everything up first.

For low volume levels might be worth installing qasmixer which will give you a gui to look at the alsa hardware levels. Something might be set too low in there.

Not sure how you’d get compression working on a system wide level. That’s what smooths out the volume levels in the dolby process.

2) Easy fix. Install smplayer. Set the normalise volume option, and use the built in equaliser to optimise the eq for your speakers.
If the volume is still too low install qusmixer and check alsa levels. Or in terminal type alsamixer and follow the help instructions.
Audacious has eq and normalisation for music playback.

I use an external usb dac via spidif optical into a surround amp, and the sound is better in linux than windows (in fact the usb dac just bsods in windows 7)! So linux can give very good results for sound.

This is probably going to be a super late reply,
New here, just finished setting up the sound on my laptop running mint and was able to get Dolby Atmos running, via impulse response file on the Pulse effects application (installed it through software manager and dropped the files in manually):

Then when you run the program select convolver> toggle wave icon «select impulse response file». File came with these 3 options:

• Razor Surround ((48k Z-Edition)) 2.Stereo +20

• MaxxAudio Pro ((128K MP3)) 4.Music w MaxxSpace

• Dolby ATMOS ((128K MP3)) 1.Default.irs

I’m sure you could probably add more files. Functions similar to Hesuvi&equalizer-APO on windows 10.
