Switched packages.ubuntu.com to the newer codebase that also runs on packages.debian.org. The two most important changes for users are that most pages are now generated dynamically (which makes for faster updates and more flexibility) and that the search functions should be much faster now.

  • The hard drive of the server was replaced today after it began to act up. Most stuff should be up and running again. I accidentally deleted the info about new packages though, so that will be not reliable for the next few days.

  • The «Bug reports» links now correctly point to Launchpad for all packages. Thanks to all the people that reported this error to me.
  • I added an robots.txt to ban some people trying to mirror the site by means of wget -r . If forever reason you need to mirror the site please contact me by mail so we can do this by other means that won’t stress the server as much.

2006-06-12 Finally make dapper the default for searches and add edgy. Sorry for the delay. 2006-01-17 I hope everyone had a good start into the new year. Some small status updates:

  • While looking at the log statistics I noticed that apparently packages.ubuntulinux.org also points to my server without me knowing. I fixed the apache configuration so that it now knows about that and handles it correctly.
  • Linking to a CSS file on the official Ubuntu homepage was a bad idea and the page had some glitches when it disappeared. Most of the issues should be fixed by now.
  • Sorry for any performance issues with the site. My little server is not always able to handle the many hits of this site (close to 2,000,000 per month). I guess I will have to search for another hosting solution in the near future.

  • The «Check for bug reports» links now point to Launchpad for universe/multiverse packages. Suggested by j -at- bootlab -dot- org.

2005-09-25 I’ve merged the new changelog to HTML conversion code from the Debian branch. I still have no idea how to handle the requests to link Ubuntu bugs to the Ubuntu BTS and Debian bugs to the Debian BTS. Suggestions welcome. 2005-08-30

  • I’ve added a warning to this site about the outdated Contents files in the Ubuntu archive which make the contents search completely useless for anything after warty. I’ve actually no idea whom to ask about this since I don’t seem to be able to find out on the Ubuntu web site who is ftp-master in Ubuntu?

2005-06-10 I have begun to work on integrating the current Ubuntu web design with my pages. There are still some issues to work out but as a teaser I already converted the front page.   • Also, the Portuguese LoCoTeam (hmm, Ubuntu teams have all very l33t names 😉 asked me how to translate the pages. Here my answer:

    At http://cvs.infodrom.org/packages.debian.org/po/?cvsroot=debian.de you can find some .pot files. Please translate them and send them back to me (You may want to take a look at the translations available at http://cvs.debian.org/webwml/portuguese/po/?cvsroot=webwml especially for files like langs.pot). This will ensure that at least the constant strings on all the pages are translated (Some of the strings in these file are only needed on packages.debian.org)

    The translations of package descriptions I took from the DDTP (Debian Descriptions Translation Project) which seems to be rather inactive lately. Unless this is fully revived or another similar project is created there is little I can do on this front.

    Download Packages With Dependencies Locally In Ubuntu

    A while ago, we discussed how to Install Softwares offline in Ubuntu. In that guide, we explained how can you download packages in an Internet-enabled system, and install them in another system that has slow or no Internet connection. In this tutorial, we will see how to download packages with dependencies locally in Ubuntu and its derivatives.

    Using this method, we can download a .DEB package along with all required dependencies without actually installing it. This way we can download packages from one system and install them later in the same system itself or any other system that has no Internet connection. We can also download packages for different architecture systems. For example, it is possible to download the 32 bit packages from a 64 bit system and vice versa.

    Download Packages With Dependencies Locally In Ubuntu

    We can do this in two methods. I tested this guide on Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04 LTS desktop editions. It worked just fine as described below.

    Method 1:

    This is the simplest and straight-forward method than other other methods given below.

    To download a package with all dependencies, without installing them, just run:

    For instance, let us download the Vim package with all required dependencies, without installing them, using command:

    Sample output:

    As you see in the above output, we have downloaded Vim package will all dependencies, but we didn’t actually install it.

    Download Packages With Dependencies Locally In Ubuntu

    All downloaded files will be saved in /var/cache/apt/archives directory.

    Just copy the entire cache folder on any USB or transfer them via network to a system that you wanted to install the packages in it.

    To install the downloaded packages, go to the cache folder and install them as shown below.

    See? It’s that simple!

    However, t his method only works if the system that you use to download the packages does not have the main package or its dependencies installed locally.

    If you try to download a package which is already installed in the same system itself, you will see an output like below.

    In such cases, use «apt-rdepends» to download all packages. If apt-rdepends is not installed yet, install it using command:

    And then download the main package (i.e. Vim in our case) along with all dependencies using command:

    This command will recursively download all required packages.

    Just in case if you encountered with an error like below:

    Try this command instead:

    This command will download Vim with all needed packages and save them in the current working directory.

    To install all downloaded packages, run:

    Method 2:

    First, download the dependencies of the package you wanted to download.

    To display list of all dependencies of a package, for example Python, run:

    Sample output:

    Let us download python package with its dependencies to our local disk.

    To do so, first create a directory to save the packages.

    Go to the directory:

    The above command will download Python package along with all required dependencies and saves them in the current working directory. This command will also save any errors in the errors.txt file.

    Let us view the downloaded files using ‘ls’ command:

    As you see in the above output, python package with all its dependencies has been downloaded.

    Just copy them to your USB drive and install the python packages on any offline system as shown below.

    Mount the USB drive, go to the location where you have mounted the drive, and run the following command to install Python.

    You might notice that the above command has downloaded the 64 bit packages. It is because I am downloading them from the 64-bit Ubuntu system. What if you want to download packages for 32-bit arch systems? It’s also possible!

    First, enable the architecture you want in your Ubuntu system using command:

    If you don’t add the architecture, you will get the following error message when try to download the packages.

    After enabling the Architecture of your choice, run the following command to download specific architecture related packages.

    As you see in the above output, I have added the architecture ‘i386’ with ‘apt-cache’ command.

    See? The above command downloaded the 32 bit packages only.

    Linux Commands To Update All Packages

    1. Debian / Ubuntu / Mint Linux and friends try the apt-get command/apt command.
    2. CentOS / RHEL / Red Hat / Fedora Linux and friends try yum command.
    3. Suse / OpenSUSE Linux use the zypper command. We can also use graphical tool called YaST online update.
    4. Slackware Linux user try the slackpkg command.
    5. Arch Linux user try the pacman command.
    6. Gentoo Linux user try emerge command.
    7. Alpine Linux user must use apk command.

    update vs upgrade in Linux

    We use the update option to download package information from all configured sources such as the Internet. The upgrade option will install available upgrades of all packages currently installed on the system from the sources such as the Internet. New packages will be installed if required to satisfy dependencies, but existing packages will never be removed. If an upgrade for a package requires removing an installed package, the upgrade for this package isn’t performed. Hence, this is a safer option in all cases.

    apt-get command example to update all packages on the Debian or Ubuntu Linux

    yum command example to update all packages on the RHEL/CentOS/Red Hat/Fedora Linux

    Execute the following command:
