In Jan 2003 I bought VueScan for my Epson Perfection 1200. I used it a lot, more functions than the standard driver. Got new computers with new operating systems, forgot about VueScan. I got a new Epson scanner — old one doesn’t have Win10 drivers. I remembered VueScan. Found it, downloaded the trial version, and my old EPSON 1200 scanner WORKED again. Wow, a purchase made in 2003, works on a PC with an operating system that doesn’t exist in 2003. 17 YEARS later! And that for a very small amount of money. Is there a new driver for the HP ScanJet 3400C. It is a good sanncer and have used it through all the upgrades. Surely HP will have a new driver that will work on Windows 7.

HP hasn’t released drivers for 3400c since XP. An alternative that some use is the highly rated VueScan. Although not free, it is less than a new scanner.Try the free trial to test if it will work with your model:

and ran it under XP combatibily mode, works fine!

My pc is a new Dell windows 7 64 bit and the 3400c is working fine.

The secret is to download (for free) and install microsoft’s «XP Virtual machine»

it’s like having an XP machine INSIDE your win 7 machine.

The installation requires 2 downloads and works smoothly.

Once in the XP environment the XP version of the 3400c software works fine.

Just remember to (at the top of the screen) use the USB menu to «attach» the scanner to the XP subsystem (which basically rerouts that USB address to the XP environment)

So far the only real bug is the windows backup will FAIL if the virtual machine has been started, even if it is stopped the backup will fail with a message about VCC or similar. If you start the virtual machine you need to do a total reboot of your pc to allow windows (win 7) backup&system image to function. But, as backup on my pc runs Tue at 1AM — I just reboot Monday night and not start the virtual machine and backup is happy.

As indicated I installed Virtual XP under windows 7.

In the virtual xp I installed the xp driver for scanjet 3400C

I cannot succeed to attach the scanjet as it doesn’t appear in the USB dropdown menu on the top of xp screen.

So far when running the «hp precisionscan LTX» the scanner is not found and cannot be initialized.

The scanner was running without problem under vista.

I deactivate «fax and scan» of window7 to try to solve the problem but I have the same problem.

Any idea to solve the problem ?

I improved a little. Now the scanner appears in the USB menu.

I clicked on the scanjet in order to lock it in the virtual xp.

But when running the «hp precisionscan LTX» the scanner is still not found and cannot be initialized.

i also tried a long time.

i suppose i cannot help you at all, but

— i think you are using W7-64-prof (for w7-32 it seams to do -> read old posts)

— all post i read say, no chance ��

— therfore with another installation of w7 i user w7-32 and/ or

— doubble boot with ubuntu — now version 14.04

— because i don’t want to throw away this scanner

. but in ubuntu you cannot use the utility from hp, with you mentioned

this means, a new scanner or other system (ubuntu or w7-32) — sorry

Thank you for the answer.

Sometime (I don’t why) the scan succeed when I push the right button on the scanner.

This could be perfect if I can find to succeed everytime and not time to time .

There another problem. How to add acrobat reader in the destination.

I don’t remember how I did before .

So for the moment I have image file (bmp)

i don’t use my scanner under w7 — i installed w7-32 only «just for fun».

but again the hint — look for older posts if not already done. i found a

lot of posts, whicht discribed solving the problem with w7-32 an hp3400.

i think, they say, use the driver from xp or vista — maybe sj652en.exe (??)

i’m using ubuntu — beginning with version 8.04. i found it boring to finance

bill gates — he is rich enough ��

there is nothing i am missing. sometimes i look for a problem for a program

Finally the problem is completely solved and the scanner is fully operational. I installed the driver sj652 in the environment window 7-32. I do not use anymore the virtual XP environment but carefully I did not uninstall it.

Congratulations if you have managed to install the proper HP driver for 3400 scanner on W7, either 64 bits o 32 bits.

Under Ubuntu, which is where I use the scanner the most, there are several flavours: pure Ubuntu, XUbuntu, LUbuntu, and so on, not to speak about Mint and other Ubuntu-based distros.

The one I feel at home with is XUbuntu. I’m currently running both 12.04 and 14.04, 64 bits in both cases. XUbuntu brings a basic app to deal with scanners called Simple Scan («Applications > Grahics» or «Applications > Graphic Design»). It can’t claim to be a full fledged application when it comes to scanning documents, but I promise it is capabl enough for most of your works.
