Generally the HP Laserjet 1020 printer is not copatible with any Mac OS version as lsited below:
As a workaround you may install an alternate driver as following:
- Connect the printer to your Mac and ensure it is power on and ready.
- Download and install the following drivers from apple:
https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US - Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Click the plus sign and select the listed 1020 printer.
- Within the Use drop down menu click on Select Printer Software.
- Locate and select the HP Laseret 1022 model and press Add.
Now try printing with the newly created print queue.

This is probably too late to help, and may not be a workaround that works for you, but .
I also have a very old HP LaserJet 1020. I had it running via USB on my MacBook last year, but after upgrading to OSX 13.4 it seems the compatibility is gone. Note that the driver I formerly used was labeled for a 1022, not 1020, but it worked. Anyway the printer no longer shows up in my list of printers. I tried following Shlomi’s post of 8/5/17 but like you, the list of printers was blank, and no way to select or define the HP.
I did a bunch of reading and have concluded that at the moment I can’t download a driver that allows a direct USB wired connection to my MacBook. maybe someone else figured that out.
I did read about AirPrint. I unhooked my HP 1020 and plugged it in with the USB to the port on my Apple Airport Extreme. After that, under system preferences and click +, the HP 1020 appears as a choice as a Bonjour printer. No other drivers needed . works fine.

Question: Q: Driver HP LaserJet 1020 MacOS Big Sur
Yesterday I installed Big Sur on My MacBook Pro 2017. At work is an old HP Laserjet 1020 printer. I installed the printer driver package from the Apple website on Catalina to work. You won’t be able to install it on this version. Not support.
MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.0

I solved this problem and now my HP 1020 works perfectly with Big Sur 11.0.1 on a new MacBook Pro with the M1 chipset. I did the following:
- Download HP Uninstaller, HP drivers 5.1 dmg (600.3MB) and the latest version of Pacifist.
- Use HP Uninstaller to remove all traces of HP printer drivers.
- Use Pacifist to extract and install HP 5.1 drivers.dmg.
- Attach HP 1020 printer via USB cable and Turn ON.
- Open printers and scanners.
- Add printer.
- Select HP LaserJet 1020.
- Select software.
- Enter search term HP LaserJet 1022.
- Double-click on HP LaserJet 1022 1.6.1 driver and select Add.
The printer now operates perfectly as before!

Instead of 1020 select 1022 that will also work

There’s more to the conversation

when you go to add a new printer, select software.
once you come up with the list
It will come up with a few options and then select the top one.
It worked for me.
I am having more difficulties with this update but its more to do with wireless falling off. I have resolved this by erasing the location(2015) and creating a new one, i called it home.
All good for now.
wonder what else I will find, other than a rather long booting cycle now.
