How to Install RTL8723DE Wifi Driver in Ubuntu 19.04
This tutorial is a rewritten of the previous ‘Fix ‘No WiFi Adapter Found’ for HP Laptops with Ubuntu 18.04‘, since wireless will stop working after installed or upgraded to a new Linux Kernel.
Following steps will install the newest Realtek rtlwifi codes including rtl8192ce, rtl8192cu, rtl8192se, rtl8192de, rtl8188ee, rtl8192ee, rtl8723ae, rtl8723be, rtl8821ae, rtl8822be and rtl8723de in Ubuntu with DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) support. So it will work in each kernel on your system.
1. Connect your laptop to a wired network, and then open terminal from application menu.
2. Run command to install some required tools:
Type user password (no asterisk feedback due to security reason) when it prompts and hit Enter.
3. Now grab the rtlwifi_new codes via command:
4. Add the source to the tree for builds with DKMS support.
5. Finally install the drivers via command:
6. If everything works OK, Wifi should work immediately (it works in my case in Ubuntu 19.04).
If not, try commands to load the new installed module (rtl8723de in the case):
7. And Wifi works after reboot without doing any configuration, at least in my case in Ubuntu 19.04.
If not, try command to write it into configuration file (replace 3 to 1, 2 or 4 if signal is weak).
In addition, if you happened to update your system with newest Kernel packages without reboot. You need to reinstall the kernel packages to get the module work after reboot.

Hey Ji m,
thanks, this looks like a very good walk-through. Unfortunately, on my new HP with RTL8821CE wifi adapter, this has not yet done the trick. Still no wifi adapter found under ubuntu 18.04 (works fine under windows).
1. I used modprobe on the rtl8821ae module (number matches my card, but ae instead of ce, no idea if that is a problem?)
2. I noticed that no rtl8821ae.conf has been created in my /etc/modprobe.d/ directory.
Do you have a suggestion what I could try? Thanks a lot!
Did you find a solution? I’m having a similar issue and was hoping you had sussed it out!
did you find a solution, I have the exact same problem, I have followed the instructions, disabled the secure booting and It doesn’t work…let me know If you already found a solution

it is recommended to use the official driver hosted at the rtlwifi-new git repsitory maintained by Larry Fingers.
Well, at last, RTL8723DE officially supported driver is made available in the rtlwifi-new git extended branch. What is left to do is, Bluetooth support for this laptop. Bluetooth share the same RTL8723DE hardware? Bluetooth is working with kernel 4.17 and above.
Before installing RTL8723DE driver, you have to make sure that Linux kernel headers for your respective distros are installed. For example: In Debian/Ubuntu the package name sounds like «linux-headers-4.xx-generic». In Fedora/RedHat, it will be kernel-headers-4.xx-x86_64 etc.
For installing from git sources in Ubuntu:
Either download a «.zip» copy of the git sources for RTL8723DE driver from https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new/archive/extended.zip , extract it and follow step (2) below
1. Make sure you have git installed. You can install git using apt install git or through synaptic/software manager. If you want to use dkms to make and install the driver, make sure that dkms also is installed. You can download and install using below commands, in a terminal:
2. The RTL8723DE driver is in the git extended branch. So,
Open a terminal:
^^ That should work. If firmware error is shown, reboot and will work. Make sure, you have linux-headers for the respective kernel(s) and build-essential packages installed.
For me, ant_sel=2 shows the maximum WiFi signal gain. So, I’ve added below lines in a separate conf file:
Hope this helps. If it does not build, use :
RTL8723D Bluetooth works now. You need Kernel 4.17 or newer to get Bluetooth working with RTL8723DE.
The steps are elaborately explained in this post: https://superuser.com/a/1322067/850732
RTL8723D Bluetooth Firmware is available in Linux firmware git directory as committed by Larry Fingers (rtlwifi-new) :
Firmware file names:
You have to git clone the directory to get the firmware and place the specific rtl8723d firmware in /lib/firmware/rtl_bt folder.
EDIT: Now, Bluetooth for RTL8723DE works with kernel Linux-4.17-rc2 and newer. Here is the dmesg log, in my case:

It seems to be not working on Arch Linux or Fedora. But it’s easy to fix
just disable «Secure boot» option in BIOS, then you’ve got working module.
P.S. «Boot configuration» in BIOS, then disable «Secure boot».

Have an HP with rtl8723de and i was able to make it work.
only issue is, signal stuck at 50%.
Nothing happens. Terminal gets stuck at doing nothing. Ctrl+z does not work to stop the command because nothing is being done. Also cannot understand why «rtl8723de.conf» is not created.
Dual boot with Windows 10, using KDE Neon based on 18.04. Kernel 4.18.0.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, it was working before the kernel change, on fedora 29, after do some research and the instructions on this main page. The dependencies and libs are important to get fisrt and reboot the machine. After update the kernel to 5.x I lost the wi-fi again, but was because the system do a clean of old packages. It is working on Fedora 30 beta too.

For Fedora 29 /30
First: Check that your system is updated:
— — open terminal and check your model
Examples: Can be realtek 8723de or 8723be , it depends, copy the info respecting uppercase If present. «Fedora normally understand low caps better.»
2.1- Install git dkms
Once git is installed and rebooted, open terminal on your /Downloads folder and run
READ carefully Check for errors, if not error dependencies reported how missing everything is ok, if not, just copy the dependency name, and google it, install it and repeat the process.
Remember the hardware model reported in the first step, it needs to be the right model on your machine.
—At this point the driver can be assigned. BELOW is the example of the correct code, just CHECK that is the same as yours, and just change in this case the example use rtl8723be .Use your model.
In my experience there’s two channels to choose 1 and 2.
The channel 2 works perfect in the machines that i tested
To set to channel 2 , run:
If channel 2 not work fine for you:
To CHANGE IT: change sel=2 for sel=1
Reboot the machine, maybe the wireless is already there and working but is better reboot the mahine.
Edit update/tip: When 5.x kernel is installed, normally it cleans older headers, that’s why if the normal installation send you errors or your wi-adapter gone away, you need to install the older headers.

Fix ‘No WiFi Adapter Found’ for HP Laptops with Ubuntu 18.04
This tutorial is a quick fix for HP laptops that wireless does not work on Ubuntu 18.04 Gnome desktop.
On my cheap laptop HP 246 G6 I found that the wireless network does not work out-of-box after installed Ubuntu 18.04. No wifi option in system tray menu, and System Settings says ‘No Wifi adapter found‘.
This happens on many HP devices including HP 15-bs000, 15-bs100, 15g-br000, 15q-bu000, and Pavilion 15-br000, HP 280 G3, 290 G1, and more. And the reason is Ubuntu does not support RTL8723de wifi driver.
1. Ubuntu 18.04.5 comes with Linux Kernel 5.4 which makes rtl8723de device work out-of-the-box.
If kernel doesn’t update to v5.4.0, run command:
2. For other RealTek WiFi drivers, e.g., rtl8188fu, rtl8192fu, rtl8723ds, rtl8723du, and more. See this how to guide.
Here’s what I did to fix no wifi adapter issue in Ubuntu 18.04:
1. Reboot and go to BIOS to make sure wireless network are enabled. And plug laptop into a wired connection.
2. Open terminal either via Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut key or by searching for ‘terminal’ from software launcher.
3.1 You may first install the building tools first via command:
3.2 Run command to get the Realtek rtlwifi codes that includes rtl8192ce, rtl8192cu, rtl8192se, rtl8192de, rtl8188ee, rtl8192ee, rtl8723ae, rtl8723be, and rtl8821ae.:
4. In this terminal window, install the drivers via command:
Type your password (no asterisk feedback) when it prompts and hit Enter.
5. If the installation success, run 2 commands load the new driver:
Wireless network starts working in my case:
6. If that does not work, you may remove and blacklist the broadcom drivers and restart:
In addition, (thanks to jeremy31) if you notice weak signal try command:
and see if it is better, if not run:
(REQUIRED) Or write the rule into configuration. REPLACE X with whatever setting (1, 2, or 3) worked best.
