Duet Display for Mac is a very useful mobile phone tool that can allow macOS users to transform their iPhone or iPad devices into a fully-functional second screen. But to access those configurations you first need to properly set up your iPhone or iPad. First, download and start Duet Display mobile app, and connect the device with Mac using a USB cable. Wireless communication is not supported.

The app can be used to configure three aspects of the connection quality – Framerate (60fps is recommended for most fluid use, but that setting can tax computer resources and faster drain your laptop battery), Performance (which will impact the image quality, three presets are available -High Power, Energy Efficient and Pixel Perfect), and finally Resolution (with support for Retina resolutions of latest iPads and iPhones).

To best take advantage of your tool, make sure that your iPad or iPhone device can support higher resolutions and your Mac can handle the rendering capacity needed to send a higher quality image to the external display. To save on resources, you can always reduce quality settings and find the most optimal image quality presets that fit your needs. Be aware that if your Mac or Laptop gets burdened with additional processing during the use of DuetDisplay (such as converting video files in another format), image quality and connection stability of external display images may suffer.

Not So Smooth Operator

There is a slight noticeable lag in the mouse movement because of which you would not like to use the connected iPad as your main working screen. Other than that it works like a breeze. Using it with iMac (Catalina), Windows 10 and Windows 7. It took a little while to get it to work with Windows 7. The support was there to hand hold, though the replies came after 24 hrs, which could be attributed to time zone differences.

A good functional expensive asset that was lying idle / waste has been resurrected productively. Using it as the 3rd screen while working on the table and as an easy to carry 2nd screen when travelling. Best part is that you get to use the touch navigation of the iPad.

Money well spent.

Ghastly

If you’re considering using this as a sort of Wacom Cintiq for your Mac/ Windows: don’t! The lag is truly horrible even in the most lightweight of sketching applications like Rebelle 3 and Autodesk Sketchbook. It’s so bad it’s completely unusable.

BUT THE WORST part is that when you first launch the app, it’ll offer you a 1 week Pro trial that’s supposed to optimize the experience for digital art (ha!). I chose that one, thinking I could always cancel in the next 1 week ifI decided not to keep it. Got an email minutes later saying that my purchase for the Pro version was successful. Went to the App store and checked my subscriptions, and sure enough, it charged my card on the very same day. Said it would renew exactly a year from the day I first installed the app. This is clear deception; every other app that offers a trial period does NOT charge you before the trial period expires. Needless to say, that’s Rs.3,000 gone down the drain.

Oh and did I mention that the resolution on the mirrored display is absolutely terrible? Defeats the whole purpose, really. If this is what the ‘pro’ version is, I shudder to think what the Air and the Free versions are like. Also the iPad got REALLY hot during use- I don’t think it’s ever run that warm before.

Bottom line: It’s an absolute waste of money, just wait for iPadOS and Sidecar on your Mac and use that. Or just hook up a Wacom to your computer. Just stay away from Duet.

Amazed as my Ipad is now my second monitor

Works great with my iPad. Just had to connect to my Windows PC using the default cable, open the application and there you go!

This helps me a lot as second monitor viewing is very handy using my iPad with laptop. I can quickly setup at remote client location and back again at home.I was amazed with the touchscreen option still working on the iPad.
