dupeGuru is a cross-platform (Linux, OS X, Windows) GUI tool to find duplicate files in a system. It’s written mostly in Python 3 and has the peculiarity of using multiple GUI toolkits, all using the same core Python code. On OS X, the UI layer is written in Objective-C and uses Cocoa. On Linux & Windows, it’s written in Python and uses Qt5.
dupeGuru is a tool to find duplicate files on your computer. It can scan either filenames or contents. The filename scan features a fuzzy matching algorithm that can find duplicate filenames even when they are not exactly the same. dupeGuru runs on Mac OS X and Linux.
dupeGuru is efficient. Find your duplicate files in minutes, thanks to its quick fuzzy matching algorithm. dupeGuru not only finds filenames that are the same, but it also finds similar filenames.
dupeGuru is good with music. It has a special Music mode that can scan tags and shows music-specific information in the duplicate results window.
dupeGuru is good with pictures. It has a special Picture mode that can scan pictures fuzzily, allowing you to find pictures that are similar, but not exactly the same.
dupeGuru is customizable. You can tweak its matching engine to find exactly the kind of duplicates you want to find. The Preference page of the help file lists all the scanning engine settings you can change.
dupeGuru is safe. Its engine has been especially designed with safety in mind. Its reference directory system as well as its grouping system prevent you from deleting files you didn’t mean to delete.
Do whatever you want with your duplicates. Not only can you delete duplicates files dupeGuru finds, but you can also move or copy them elsewhere. There are also multiple ways to filter and sort your results to easily weed out false duplicates (for low threshold scans).

dupeGuru is a great tool that has been specifically designed to locate duplicate files on your system. It is able to scan for both filename or file content. The filename scan uses a fuzzy matching algorithm, which is able to root out duplicate filenames, even when they are not exactly the same or are only similar.
dupeGuru is a handy little tool that gives you a safe and quick way to scan and remove large numbers of files, without manually scanning and removing them individually. dupeGuru also allow you to move or copy duplicated files elsewhere.
dupeGuru can not only find duplicated files, but it is also good with music data as well. The app has a Music mode feature, that is able to scan tags and then shows music-specific data in the duplicate results window. The special Picture mode works in much the same way.
With a customizable scanning engine and safety protocols in place to stop you from deleting system critical files, dupeGuru is a quality app that every Mac user needs to have.

Eradicate duplicate files from your music collection
Going through huge numbers of files one by one to see which ones have been duplicated can be a complete pain and very time consuming. dupeGuru is a tool to make the job easier by finding duplicate files on your computer.
It can scan either file names or contents so it can search deep inside documents. dupeGuru not only finds file names that are the same, but it also finds similar file names. dupeGuru offers a safe and rapid way to update huge numbers of files at the same time without any extra effort on your part. dupeGuru not only allows you to delete duplicate files but also move or copy them elsewhere.
However, if some duplicates are not as clear as others, dupeGuru uses a special algorithm which can mark out which files genuinely are separate and which ones are just similar thanks to the Power Marker. dupeGuru saves you time and does its job extremely quickly. However, it can still be confusing which files are duplicates and which are not. Sometimes dupeGuru selects files which it thinks are duplicates but in reality are not so be careful what you allow it to delete. It also has a habit of missing some duplicate files from time to time. It ignores files under 30MB by default although you can deactivate this.
Most recently, dupeGuru has been totally revamped to make a much slicker app. However, the preferences still aren’t easy enough to access if you’re making lots of scans and need to customize the way dupeGuru searches for each one.
dupeGuru is a super quick way to weed out those files which you don’t need any more or which are taking up valuable space on your hard drive.

How to build dupeGuru from source
Windows & macOS specific additional instructions

When running in a linux based environment the following system packages or equivalents are needed to build:
- python3-pyqt5
- pyqt5-dev-tools (on some systems, see note)
- python3-wheel (for hsaudiotag3k)
- python3-venv (only if using a virtual environment)
- python3-dev
- build-essential
Note: On some linux systems pyrcc5 is not put on the path when installing python3-pyqt5, this will cause some issues with the resource files (and icons). These systems should have a respective pyqt5-dev-tools package, which should also be installed. The presence of pyrcc5 can be checked with which pyrcc5 . Debian based systems need the extra package, and Arch does not.

The complete test suite is run with Tox 1.7+. If you have it installed system-wide, you don’t even need to set up a virtualenv. Just cd into the root project folder and run tox .
If you don’t have Tox system-wide, install it in your virtualenv with pip install tox and then run tox .
