A Science Fiction Terminal Emulator Created for Linux

eDEX-UI is a geeky, fullscreen, highly configurable, and cross-platform desktop application resembling a movie-like futuristic computer interface, that runs on Linux, Windows, and macOS. It creates the illusion of a desktop environment without windows.

It is heavily inspired by DEX-UI and the TRON Legacy movie effects. It uses a number of open-source libraries, frameworks, and tools. It was designed and intended to be used on devices with large touchscreens, but it works well on a regular desktop computer or perhaps a tablet PC or laptops with touchscreens.

eDEX-UI runs the shell of your choice in a real terminal, and displays live system information about the CPU, memory, temperature, top processes, and network. By default, eDEX runs bash on Linux, but this is configurable. It also has a file manager and an on-screen keyboard. It comes with various customization options, including multiple themes that you can load from the interface itself.

This application is not built for doing any practical work on your system; it just makes your device or computer feel insanely geeky. You can use it to impress your friends or colleagues at work or anyone around you.

How to Install eDEX-UI Terminal Emulator in Linux

To install eDEX-UI, download the pre-compiled binaries available on the release page using following wget utility from the command line as shown.

Once you have downloaded it, make the eDEX-UI AppImage executable and run it using the following commands.

You will be asked “Would you like to integrate eDEX-UI.Linux.x86_64.AppImage with your system?”, click on Yes to continue.

The application with boot up, once the process is complete, you will be connected to the eDEX-UI frontend, with the default theme.

To change the theme, under FILESYSTEM, click on the themes directory, then click on the .json file for the theme you want to use (you can do the same to change the fonts or keyboard settings).

To exit the application, type “exit” in the terminal embedded in its interface, or simply press Alt + F4 .

Attention: The onscreen keyboard displays each key you press on the keyboard (it shows what you are typing), so you probably shouldn’t type passwords while using this application. Secondly, if you observe carefully from the list of top processes, eDEX-UI consumes a lot of CPU and RAM. These are some of its downsides.

eDEX-UI – эмулятор терминала, разработанный с стиле компьютерного интерфейса из фильма Tron Legacy. Данный проект разработан на платформе платформы Electron. Боковые панели отображают параметры системы, загрузка центрального процессора, использования оперативной памяти, а в нижней части экрана расположен файловый менеджер и клавиатура. Что позволяет использовать данный терминал на сенсорных экранах. При наборе текста происходит звуковое сопровождение, что так же способствует погружению в атмосферу. Окружение возможно настроить под свой вкус, можно изменить цвет, переместить панели, а так же возможно установить темы оформления.

Установка терминала eDEX-UI

Для установки терминала eDEX-UI можно перейти на github и скачать последнюю версию терминала eDEX-UI, для этого достаточно просто нажать на данную ссылку. Там же вы найдете и открытый код данного терминала. Либо, воспользоваться утилитой “wget”, для этого выполняем команду в тенминале:

Когда загрузка завершиться, необходимо сделать файл исполняемым, после чего запускаем терминал eDEX-UI, для этого выполняем команды:

При первом запуске терминала eDEX-UI появится окно, с вопросом “Хотели бы вы интегрировать eDEX-UI.Linux.x86_64.AppImage с вашей системой?” Вы можете согласиться, если хотите интегрировать eDEX-UI с вашей операционной системой, либо, отказаться. Терминал в любом случае запуститься.

Заключение

Стоит отметить, что терминал eDEX-UI все таки ресурсоемкий, а соответственно, на слабых машинах не рекомендуется его использовать. В остальном, это полнофункциональный эмулятор терминала, который можно использовать вместо обычного терминала в вашей системе. Для выхода из eDEX-UI достаточно набрать “exit”, и eDEX-UI закроется. Что же касается Arch и его подобных, терминал eDEX-UI можно найти в репозиториях AUR. eDEX-UI is a fullscreen, cross-platform terminal emulator and system monitor that looks and feels like a sci-fi computer interface.

Heavily inspired from the TRON Legacy movie effects (especially the Board Room sequence), the eDEX-UI project was originally meant to be «DEX-UI with less « art » and more « distributable software »». While keeping a futuristic look and feel, it strives to maintain a certain level of functionality and to be usable in real-life scenarios, with the larger goal of bringing science-fiction UXs to the mainstream.

It might or might not be a joke taken too seriously.

How do I get it?

Click on the little badges under the eDEX logo at the top of this page, or go to the Releases tab, or download it through one of the available repositories (Homebrew, AUR. ).

Public release binaries are unsigned (why). On Linux, you will need to chmod +x the AppImage file in order to run it.

I have a problem!

Search through the Issues to see if yours has already been reported. If you’re confident it hasn’t been reported yet, feel free to open up a new one. If you see your issue and it’s been closed, it probably means that the fix for it will ship in the next version, and you’ll have to wait a bit.

Can you disable the keyboard/the filesystem display?

You can’t disable them (yet) but you can hide them. See the tron-notype theme.

Why is the file browser saying that «Tracking Failed»? (Windows only)

On Linux and macOS, eDEX tracks where you’re going in your terminal tab to display the content of the current folder on-screen. Sadly, this is technically impossible to do on Windows right now, so the file browser reverts back to a «detached» mode. You can still use it to browse files & directories and click on files to input their path in the terminal.

Can this run on a Raspberry Pi / ARM device?

Useful commands for the nerds

IMPORTANT NOTE: the following instructions are meant for running eDEX from the latest unoptimized, unreleased, development version. If you’d like to get stable software instead, refer to these instructions.

Starting from source:

on *nix systems (You’ll need the Xcode command line tools on macOS):

• clone the repository
• npm run install-linux
• npm run start

• start cmd or powershell as administrator
• clone the repository
• npm run install-windows
• npm run start

Note: Due to native modules, you can only build targets for the host OS you are using.

• npm install (NOT install-linux or install-windows )
• npm run build-linux or build-windows or build-darwin

The script will minify the source code, recompile native dependencies and create distributable assets in the dist folder.

Getting the bleeding edge

If you’re interested in running the latest in-development version but don’t want to compile source code yourself, you can can get pre-built nightly binaries on GitHub Actions: click the latest commits, and download the artifacts bundle for your OS.
