How to install Edimax EW-7811UTC AC600 Wireless USB with no internet (no ethernet)
I’ve recently bought a new USB wireless adapter from EDIMAX model EW-7811UTC AC600 Dual-Band. Works like a charm on Win7, however I’m having trouble installing it on my Ubuntu 14.04 LTE. In the instruction manual it states that «An active connection is required for Linux driver installation»
Having no access to wired network I’m unable to follow the steps in manual and was wondering whether there’s an alternative way of installing it without the internet connection.
Installation Manual for Linux:
With my purchase I have received a cd with drivers:
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 7392:a811 Edimax Technology Co., Ltd
Would like to add that I’m an absolute newbie and would appreciate if anybody could advise what steps needs to be taken to successfully install this USB adapter.
Re: How to install Edimax EW-7811UTC AC600 Wireless USB with no internet (no ethernet
Here is how you install it in about five minutes.
Leo: «Hey, friend, can I borrow your ethernet connection for just a few minutes? I brought along six of your favorite beverage.»
Friend: «Sure, Leo, glad to help you! Let me put a couple of those beverages on ice.»
You then open a terminal and do:
Your wireless should now be working. Detach the ethernet, thank the friend and enjoy!
Here is how to do it in about five days. maybe.
Select Trusty in the drop-down box. Search for linux-headers-generic, build-essential and git. Be sure to locate their dependencies and the dependencies of the dependencies. Be sure to download the correct version, either 32- or 64-bit. Once you’ve download about fifteen or so packages on another computer, transfer them with a USB stick or similar to the desktop of your Ubuntu computer. Open a terminal and install them:
It may complain that a package is missing a dependency. If so, download that and add it to the desktop and try again.
Write many posts on the forum to tell old Chili how you’re stuck. Rinse and repeat.
Once that’s all done, get this: https://github.com/gnab/rtl8812au/archive/master.zip Download it and then transfer it to your desktop, too. Right-click it and select ‘Extract Here.’ Now, back to the terminal.
Your wireless should now be working.
Re: How to install Edimax EW-7811UTC AC600 Wireless USB with no internet (no ethernet
Hi Chili, many thanks for comprehensive response. I’d prefer 5 min option with a friend over 5 days solution. Too bad that all of my friends consider ethernet cables as ancient technology. Easy fix as I’ve ordered a cheap ethernet cable over ebay I don’t mind waiting bit longer to get this running smooth. Will post back next week once the cable arrives. Thanks
Re: How to install Edimax EW-7811UTC AC600 Wireless USB with no internet (no ethernet
I look forward to your post and please spend as much on the beverages as on the cable! Good luck!
Re: How to install Edimax EW-7811UTC AC600 Wireless USB with no internet (no ethernet
Chili you probably heard it not once, not twice but you are a lifesaver . I’ve tried the first solution with ethernet cable and it worked perfect. I’m now able to connect to 5Ghz wifi network over my EDIMAX EW-7811UTC AC600 Wireless dual band mini USB Adapter. Highly recommend this device previously on Win7 with different 2Ghz usb dongle was getting download speeds between 40-45 Mbps, now on 5Ghz connection gettin download speeds over 60 Mbps.
For those that have a freshly installed copy of 14.04 LTE before applying the steps suggested by chili555 make sure to go to «Software & Updates» and under ubuntu software tab tick all downloadable options and select download from Main Server, otherwise like in my case you may get «Package build-essential is not available» type of error.
Once again Many Thanks for your help Chili!
Re: How to install Edimax EW-7811UTC AC600 Wireless USB with no internet (no ethernet
You have compiled the driver only for your currently running kernel. When Software Updater installs a newer linux-image, after the requested reboot, you will need to re-compile:
Please retain the files and these instructions for that time.
Re: How to install Edimax EW-7811UTC AC600 Wireless USB with no internet (no ethernet
Hi Chili, thanks for bringing this up certainly it will come useful after installing the updates
Re: How to install Edimax EW-7811UTC AC600 Wireless USB with no internet (no ethernet
Thanks Chili555 and Leo18 for giving me hope that i can resolve this. I spend quite some time yesterday to USB move 9 packages to get build-essential installed on my 12.04 box. I thought i had it working but then the make failed using the official driver. I am going to see if i can use that git based driver

How to install EW-7811 AC600 & EW-7822UAC in Linux with kernel higher than v4.1 Print
Modified on: Wed, 30 May, 2018 at 10:03 AM
This Guide only applies to EW-7811 AC600 Series (EW-7811DAC, EW-7811UAC, and EW-7811UTC) and EW-7822UAC AC1200 USB 3.0 adapters. If you have adapters other than those mentioned, you need to visit our website for the proper Linux driver info.
As of November 2017, the Official Linux drivers for the above-mentioned adapters support Linux kernel up to v4.1 only. Any versions higher than that are not supported. The only workaround is to use an open source driver from GitHub. Here’s the link for your reference.
An Ubuntu 18.04 installation is used to test the driver. It is running kernel v4.15.0-22. A Terminal program is being used to run all the commands for compiling and installing the driver. The ‘$’ in front of each command (green color below) is just the prompt to indicate you’re just a normal user. You don’t need to include it, i.e. do not type it. Commands should be input one at a time.
[1.] Make sure your system has a temporary Internet connection to download all the necessary files.
[2.] Open a Terminal program.
[3.] Make sure your system is up-to-date.
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt upgrade
$ sudo reboot
[ Note: Reboot may be needed if the kernel has been updated/upgraded. This step is totally optional. You don’t have to do it but it is highly recommended. ]
[4.] Once back to the desktop, open a Terminal program again.
[5.] Make sure you have all the necessary files (headers, gcc compiler, make utility, etc.) to compile and install the driver.
$ sudo apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
$ sudo apt install build-essential dkms git
[6.] Clone the open source driver from GitHub repository.
[ Note: Right after ‘rt’ is a letter ‘l’ (like lemon), not a number ‘1’ (like 1980). And right after 88 is a number ‘1’ (like 1980), not a letter ‘l’ (like lemon). Typing them wrong will cause GitHub to prompt you inputting a Username and a Password or saying repository not found. ]
[7.] Change directory.
$ cd rtl8812au/
[8.] Compile and install the driver. There are two ways: using dkms as mentioned on the GitHub repository page or manually. Please use either (a.) or (b.) but not both!
(a.) Using dkms(dynamic kernel module support) which will automatically rebuild and install on kernel updates.
$ sudo ./dkms-install.sh
(b.) Manually.
$ make
$ sudo make install
[9.] Restart your system for the new driver to take effect.
$ sudo reboot
If you use Step [8](b) to compile and install the driver. You need to re-do it on every kernel update provided that the updated kernel is supported by the open source driver. Otherwise, the adapter is not going to work. Before installing a new driver, please remove the old one using the following commands.
[A.] Manually.
$ cd rtl8812au/
$ sudo make uninstall
$ make clean
$ sudo reboot
[B.] Using dkms.
$ sudo ./dkms-remove.sh
Then, repeat Steps 1
9 above to recompile and reinstall the driver.
If you’re running a Linux distribution other than Ubuntu (Debian-based Linux), you need to modify some of the commands accordingly. For example, you need to use ‘zypper’ in OpenSUSE instead of ‘apt’ to install updates/upgrades/programs.
