exclamation sound keeps ringing

I am going crazy. My windows 7 has a sound (exclamation or device disconnect) frequently ringing for no reason. How can I stop it?

Please answer these questions in order to understand the issue better.

1. Do you remember making any hardware changes on the computer prior to the issue?

2. What is the make and model of the computer?

3. Have you connected any external devices to the computer?

4. Did you check for any loose cable connection on the computer?

You may face this issue if any external hardware device is not connected properly to the computer or due to hardware malfunction. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues. Try these methods and check if it helps:

If your computer is having problems with a recently installed device or other hardware, try using the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter to fix the problem.

You may also run the Microsoft fixit tool and check if it helps:

Also check the manufacturer’s website for patches, updated drivers or to simply find out about Windows 7 support for the particular product.

Follow these steps to determine whether Device Manager can find the device driver. You may uninstall device from the Device manager.

a) Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click System and Maintenance, and then click Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

b) In the list, double-click the type of device, and then locate the specific device that isn’t working properly.

c) If an exclamation mark appears next to the name of the device, Device Manager can’t find the device driver. Go to «Use Windows Update to find a device driver.»

d) If Windows Update is not able to find the device drivers, check for the latest drivers from the manufacturer website.

e) If no exclamation mark appears next to the name of the device, go to «Uninstall and reinstall the device driver.»

The question you have posted doesn’t have enough to assist you. Answer the following questions, these will help us to assist you further.

1. Are you using a 3 rd party antivirus on your computer?

2. What is the make and model of the computer?

3. Which updates have you installed on your computer?

As a general troubleshooting methods, you may try these methods.

I would suggest you to check the issue status in safe mode and clean boot status.

Step 1:

Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode)

Keep the computer in clean boot and check the issue status.

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.

Note: Please go through the section: How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

You can uninstall the installed Windows updates and check the issue status. You can also a perform system restore to system restore point before installing Windows Updates.

How to restore, refresh, or reset your PC.

Important: System Restore will not revert any of the non-system files like documents, email, music, etc. to a previous state. These types files are completely unaffected by System Restore. If your intention with this tool was to recover a deleted non-system file, try using a file recovery program instead of System Restore.

Exclamation sound in windows

It seems that you’re using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don’t work at all).

Periodically through the course of gameplay, I hear a faint «beep» that is not part of the game’s music or sound effects. The sound appears to occur randomly and it does somehow seem to be location sensitive (i.e. it is louder when the game is focused above whatever is causing it, quieter when it is off in the distance). I first noticed it while playing through the game’s original campaign and it is still occurring now that I am playing the Aryn campaign. The beep was a very familiar sounding one, so I went through the Windows system sounds until I found that it was actually the default «Exclamation» sound (in Windows XP). I have checked Windows logs and can find no error or warning associated with with the sound event and nothing unusual has been happening in the game, so I’m not sure what might be so exclamatory. Anybody else experiencing this or have any ideas what might be causing it (or have an idea on how I can figure that out)?

EDIT — Well, looks like I figured it out. The sound was caused by Windows DEP interfering with the game in some way. Now if I could just figure out how DEP turned itself back on.
