I’m trying to use this program to help aid my synthesizer education after seeing a video about it (http://vimeo.com/1309545) but ableton doesn’t seem to recognize it.

I downloaded the program, had to use unarchiver to open it, and got this file with a weird face as an icon which is listed as a «VST plug-in» in it’s information. I moved it to the VST folder and it doesn’t get scanned in to ableton.

Spectrum doesn’t seem to allow the same view I’m looking for, is there another program or did I miss something?

I went to preferences and rescanned for plug-ins, not sure what you mean by manual rescan.

I’m on a mac and I’m not really sure if it’s 32 or not, might be 64? I’m guessing.

downloaded the os x version, seeing as i’m on a mac.

there are 2 versions. the audio unit version asks for an application when it’s a .dmg file which normally just installs. the regular OSX version has a vst file which is what i tried putting in my vst folder and scanning for and ableton didn’t pick it up. i’ve used plenty of other VSTs so that is unusual.

It’s mentioned in this next link that there’s another type of software used with it, not sure if that’s necessary as a plug in to live though. I’ve tried demoing that software but the demo didn’t work, on the first go at least. I’m still messing around with it, would be much easier if there was another type of freeware that does this though.

So, now I’ve gotten the demo of AudioMulch running, which is mentioned in that link, but I don’t see the relevance of this and the s(m)exoscope running in ableton.

s(M)exoscope 64 bit does not show up in plugins.

Post by Ali_K_Muse » Tue Jan 17, 2017 3:53 pm

Hi, Recently I download latest release of s(m)exoscope that is 64 bit version then i unzip it and copy the folder that includes DLL file into my custom plugin folder , where my other plugins are but after rescan, ableton does not recognize it. I am at Windows 7 64bit. ableton suite 9.5 64bit full, everything works fine but this issue.
I really love to use this plug in and not the alternates.
Maybe I did not install it correctly but i couldn’t find anything about installing this.

You can find this free vst here:

Hey I’m having the same issue, only I don’t know what you guys are talking about with a «windows» folder. I’m on Ableton Live 9 64 bit. I’m in Windows 10.

I’m clicking on the download link titled «windows» found on this page.

This prompts an automatic download of a compressed zip file called

Then I unzip the folder. ( I tried unzipping it in downloads and in the plugin folder, neither worked)

Inside the zipped folder are 4 files.

Docs
readme
smex.dll
smexmod.dll

Docs just has graphics in it and a link to the usage instructions which I’ve read.
Readme has nothing helpful about this situation.
And the .dll’s are obviously the VST’s.

Nothing I do to, makes them appear when I rescan the folders in Ableton’s preferences. I’ve tried moving other .dll’s there and they show up fine.

Is this plugin only 32 bit? Is that why it isn’t showing up?

I tried shortcuts, I tried copying the whole unzipped file and unzipping it in the plugin location.
I tried everything I can think of.

The original author of the plugin has recompiled a bunch of his stuff for 64bit, and there’s also a dark themed version of s(m)exoscope available. I prefer the darker GUI personally.

The other benefit to using this recompile from the Bram is that Armando’s version doesn’t address is the «UniqueID» of the 32bit version — so any older projects created with the 32bit version will display an error when it can’t find a VST with the right UniqueID. If you use Bram’s new version, it has the exact same UniqueID string embedded and Live will load the 64bit version of s(m)exoscope on any older projects saved with the original 32bit version.

I had asked Armando about addressing this on reddit, but so far he has not changed the UniqueID since he released his version.

sMexoscope – FREE Oscilloscope VST (64bit)

IDS Team · November 15, 2016

Last Updated on September 19, 2020 by

One of most popular free VSTs was finally updated with 64 bit support.

It is available as VST/VST3/AU format for MacOS and VST/VST3 format for Windows. That was done by migrating the source code to JUCE.

SMEXOSCOPE is a waveform visualisation plugin. It’s a great tool developed by the guys over at Smart Electronix, who did us all a solid and released it for free!

Download s(M)exoscope completely free here

This is, in our opinion, the very best free oscilloscope vst in the market.

Here’s a sneak peak of what the interface looks like:

The 2 first knobs in the upper right hand corner control the “zoom” of the display: The time know controls the number of pixels per sample, whilst the amp knob controls the amplitude of the wave.

It also comes with some pretty nifty wave analysis tools, such as:

  • amplitude (linear)
  • amplitude (decibels)
  • length (in samples)
  • length (in seconds)
  • length (in milliseconds)
  • frequency

All in all, its a pretty cool tool that you can use in sampling, sound design, and mastering.

For a deeper look into its features, you can check out the docs here.

Best Oscilloscope VST/AU Plugins; Free & Premium!

Last Updated on February 12, 2021.

What is an Oscilloscope

An oscilloscope uses a two-axis graph to give a visual representation of a waveform over time; the horizontal axis represents time and the vertical axis represents the amplitude.

In music production, oscilloscopes are usually placed last in the chain and are used to to assist dynamics processing and sound synthesis.

The point of placing it last in the signal chain is so that it analyses the cumulative effects of any plugins placed before it.

However, you can place it anywhere you like to view the signal at that precise point.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s more on to the plugins!

Best 5 Free Oscilloscope VST

MOscilloscope by MeldaProduction (Windows, Mac)

MOscilloscope is a powerful oscilloscope equipped with a pitch detector.

This would be my top oscillator choice of this list, both for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows and Mac systems.

Related: Here’s a huge list of the 225 best Free VST plugins available!

Oscarizor by Sugar Audio (Windows, Mac)

Oscarizor is a free oscilloscope VST/VST3/AU plugin for Windows and Mac.

Despite not having as many features as the Pro version, which I will link later on, Oscarizor is still a very functional oscilloscope that offers a lot of value.

Features

  • 2D / 3D full featured parametric multi analyzer
  • Multi channel waterfall spectrum analyzer audio plug-in with mountains, bars, cylinder and tube models
  • Parallel waveform & spectrum comparison using side-chaining and send/receive channels
  • DAW host synchronization, initial autosync to receives & resync to receives button
  • Automatic instrument tuner with FFT size and function memory
  • …and many more!

Oscillos-Mega-Scope by Schulz Audio (Windows, Mac)

Oscillos-Mega-Scope is an oscilloscope plugin that synchronizes to your music’s tempo.

It’s a great tool for learning what other VSTs do to your tracks; you can insert one instance of it before the effect plugin and another one after it to get an accurate visual representation of what’s happening.

It’s got a feature that is currently in beta which is designed to let you measure and see information about the musical notes and amplitude.

Features

  • supports multiple channels / test-points
  • multiple draw modes (precise, shaded, and more)
  • preset management
  • different zoom-levels (1/32th note to 16 bars)
  • multiple visualisation modes (separate waves, combined waves)
  • input-level adjustment
  • …and many more.

Note: To be able to use it you’ll need to create an account.

S(M)exoscope by Smartelectronix (Windows, Mac)

S(M)exoscope has always been considered by many to be the best free oscilloscope out there, the issue is that it only works on 32-bit systems.

Now, if you’re still using a 32-bit system, then absolutely get s(M)exoscope since it’s the absolute best choice.

Oscilloscope by SocaLabs (Windows, Mac)

This is a free stereo oscilloscope VST/AU plugin that is super simple to use, with a resizable UI, and more.

Features

  • Stereo Oscilloscope.
  • Negative or positive edge trigger.
  • Adjustable trigger level.
  • Y Offset per channel.

Best Premium Oscilloscope VST

Oscilloscope Multi by Blue Cat Audio (Windows, Mac)

Oscilloscope Multi lets you visualize the content of several audio tracks on the same screen and compare them thanks to its X-Y view.

The plugin offers stereo or mid-side channels waveform extraction as well as several synchronization modes.

The zooming and precise measurement capabilities let you analyze the waveforms in details, and the XY phase scope view will help you track phase issues within an effect chain or while recording with multiple microphones.

Features

  • Multiple tracks real time oscilloscope: visualize and compare the waveform of several audio tracks on the same screen.
  • Waveform display with loop, flow and trigger modes.
  • Histogram display.
  • Dual channel XY phasescope view for easy phase cancelation and mono compatibility issues detection on multiple tracks or within an effect chain.
  • Latency compensation capability to align waveforms.
  • …and more!

Find out more about Oscilloscope Multi here.

Oscarizor Pro (Windows, Mac)

I mentioned the free version of Oscarizor previously, which should actually be more than enough for almost anyone.

However, the Pro version syncs to the tempo of your song, which is always nice.

Additionally, it comes with a sidechain input with parallel waveform comparison for up to 16 audio channels which would allow you to, for example, send a complete drum mix to a separate sidechain inputs and compare any two tracks you’d like.

The Pro version sells for $49.95 + Taxes.

Conclusion

Like I mentioned, Moscilloscope would be my top choice.

However, Oscilloscope by SocaLabs is still a great contender that you should check out!
