Frequently asked questions

Do you have a student discount?

We were all students too once (some of us longer than others), and we understand that students often don’t have much disposable income (even for awesome software). If you’re a full time student purchasing ExpanDrive would be a significant financial hardship, then contact us from your school e-mail account and we’ll work something out. Volume discounts are also available for academic institutions and we’re happy to help customize a deployment.

What are the minimum system requirements?

ExpanDrive runs on Microsoft Windows 7 and newer (including 64-bit and Windows server installations) as well as macOS 10.10 or newer.

Where can I find older versions of ExpanDrive?

All old versions of ExpanDrive are archived for download here, along with release notes:

Why can’t ExpanDrive always report available free space?

Most SFTP servers do not give us any way to determine how much free space the user has available. On these servers ExpanDrive uses a dummy value. ExpanDrive does correctly report free space when connected to servers that support the statvfs@openssh.com command , such as OpenSSH 5.1 and newer.

Can ExpanDrive ‘sudo’ to edit files?

Privilege escalation is a feature we have looked at in the past, but there is unfortunately no way to implement it safely and transparently across the variety of different SFTP platforms available in the world. Because SFTP (and FTP too, for that matter) lacks any built-in command to change the UID assigned at connection time, the only way you could even approach this problem would be to invoke shell commands. We’ve experimented with doing this, and concluded that it’s just too error-prone, fragile, and potentially dangerous to justify the complication. You can, of course, connect to the server through ExpanDrive as the root user, and gain administrative access that way.

Can I use ExpanDrive and OS X Time Machine together?

We love this idea, and we’ve spent a fair bit of time trying to make it happen. Unfortunately there are some filesystem characteristics that time machine relies on [hard links, notably] that we can’t safely emulate with ExpanDrive. It’s also fairly slow on high latency connections.

How does ExpanDrive handle .DS_Store files on Mac?

ExpanDrive does not create new .DS_Store files on the remote server. When the system requests creation of a new .DS_Store file, we make a memory-only object within ExpanDrive to represent it. When the drive is disconnected, these files and their contents are dropped. However, if an existing .DS_Store file is found on the remote server, reads and writes on that file are performed normally.

ExpanDrive 7.7.9

The Smartest Way to Connect to the Cloud.

Seamless access to cloud storage from any within any application.

Version 7.7.8 for Mac, Windows and Linux
Released March 26th, 2021

Built into Finder and Explorer

ExpanDrive adds cloud storage like Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon S3, SFTP (SSH), Box, OneDrive and Sharepoint to Finder and Explorer. Don’t bother with an extra app just to move data around. ExpanDrive connects cloud storage to every application on your computer including Office 365, Photoshop, and VS Code.

Smart Offline Sync

Choose files for offline access and work without an internet connection. Synchronization to the cloud takes place automatically when you’re back online. Other files are accessed on-demand from the cloud, taking no disk space.

Hello, Linux

Major storage providers have left you behind and we’re here to help. ExpanDrive adds native cloud storage access into Linux for all major Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Linux Mint, CentOS, Redhat, and more.

ExpanDrive hooks into Spotlight Search on Mac and Windows file search. Quickly search your remote storage for whatever you’re looking for. The integrated storage browser has additional support for blazing-fast server side search.

Multi-user file locking

ExpanDrive now propagates lock files in Microsoft Office documents across the cloud. If a user is editing an Office document, other users will only be able to open that document read-only until the editing user closes it.

File Version Management

Easily access older versions of files on cloud storage backends that support versioning, including Box, Dropbox, S3, Google Drive, OneDrive and Sharepoint.

Connect to any Cloud

Connect to all major cloud storage providers, or your own server. With a single app you can connect to:

Amazing Reviews

“ExpanDrive lets you mount remote sftp drives and it actually works! I.e. no long delays or dropped connection in the middle of a save.”

“My first impression after reading ExpanDrive’s promotional description last week was that it sounded too good to be true. One week later, I’m pretty sure it actually is that good.”

John Gruber, Daring Fireball

Cloud storage in every application

Add cloud storage, like Google, Dropbox, Amazon S3, Sharepoint, and more to every application on your computer. ExpanDrive builds a secure connection from the filesystem to the cloud. Open, edit, and save files to remote computers from within your favorite programs — even when they are on a server half a world away.

Super-fast background uploads

ExpanDrive has multi-threaded connection engine that is up to 500% faster that previous version. ExpanDrive performs parallel transfers in the background so that you have a reliable transfer even in the face of unreliable internet. Keep working and stop waiting for transfers to complete.

Mount Google Drive on macOS and Windows (2021)

Learn how to map Google Drive as a fast network drive on macOS, Windows or Linux. If you’re looking for a solution for Google Drive on Apple M1 because File Stream doesn’t work, check out Strongsync. Access your entire Google Google Workspace account on-demand without having to suck up disk space by pre-syncing all of your data.

Getting started with Google

Google Drive is Google’s file storage and sharing product for Google WorkSpace. For personal accounts it comes with 15GB of free online storage. Business, enterprise and academic GSuite plans have unlimited storage.

Most people use Drive via their browser directly at https://drive.google.com. Serious users need a full native integration on their desktop that lets them access files in the cloud from within any application.

Google provides native integration options such their iOS/Android App and their backup and sync client, available for regular Google WorkSpace accounts. If you’re looking to get full native access to Google Drive in Finder or Explorer a shared network drive is a great option.

Mounting Google Drive

ExpanDrive is a powerful Google Drive client that connects to Google’s API transforming Drive into a fast network drive. It makes your entire accounts available from any app on your desktop.

A mounted volume of a single team drive

Sync clients generally require you pre-download and keep a copy of all the files you’re interested in on your machine. This takes up valuable harddrive space, time and bandwidth. Often for files you don’t need. With a shared drive you can access everything on-demand. If your company has many TB of data stored in the cloud and you travel with a small laptop, a mapping a network drive to Google lets you have the best of both worlds.

Connect to multiple accounts

Another nice thing about connecting to Google Drive as a network drive is that you can connect to multiple Google Drive accounts at the same time. You can map the root of your Google Drive or an individual Team Drive as a drive letter. You can even configure ExpanDrive to mount individual folders within your personal drive or within a Team Drive. If you’re working on a project confined to one tree of folders, this can be really convenient.

Powerful Server Edition

Head over to our ExpanDrive Server Edition page for instructions and packages for Windows and Linux servers. ExpanDrive Server edition is designed to run unattended, at boot [versus login], and provides drives that can even be re-shared on the network.

Requirements

ExpanDrive supports macOS 10.10 or newer and a wide variety of Linux distributions including Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Centos, Fedora, Redhat, and more. Learn more about how to install ExpanDrive for Linux here.

ExpanDrive runs on Microsoft Windows 7 through Windows 10. Windows Server is also supported as well as RDP/Terminal services environments. ExpanDrive can isolate multiple users logged into the same machine so they each have their own view of cloud storage.

Map specific Team Drive

Let’s say you’re working on a team of people that is all using the same Team Drive. You can map that team drive to its own drive letter by configuring the remote path inside ExpanDrive. All of the team drives are organized in the “Team Drives” folder. If you had a Team Drive named “work” you could mount just that by setting the remote path to “/Team Drives/work” inside ExpanDrive.

Set the remote path to mount a specific Team Drive or folder

Files on demand

Saving disk space or accessing huge shared Google Drive accounts is another great thing about ExpanDrive and Google Drive. Everything is accessed on demand without preemptively syncing data back and forth. So if you were working on a huge Team Drive like in the previous example you could mount that entire space without needing to first sync it to your computer. You can also easily mark files to be available as offline so you can get work done even without an internet connection.

Access Google Drive as a shared drive

ExpanDrive lets you actually mount your Google Drive account as a virtual drive, just like a USB Drive, on Mac or Windows. It adds Google Drive to Finder so you can browse and access your Drive account without needing to first sync your files, which takes up time and space on your laptop. Just access what you need, when you need it, from within any app like Finder, Windows Explorer, Microsoft Word, Photoshop, or whatever you use. Everything is safely in the cloud but not taking up space on your computer. Isn’t that the point of cloud storage anyways?

Free up hard drive space

What good is a 10TB account if your only supported mechanism move data is via sync. Jason Snell recently wrote a piece at Six Colors called the Dropbox Terabyte Conundrum about this same problem with Dropbox’s new 1TB plan. Using Sync to move your data means you need to pick a folder that mirrors your Drive account and then keep a copy of all that data on your machine. So unless your laptop have a 10TB Drobo or Synology NAS attached to it, then you can’t really DO much with a 10TB Google Drive account. Unless you have ExpanDrive.

Map Amazon S3 Drive on macOS or Windows (2021)

Map S3 as a Network Drive with ExpanDrive

If you’re looking to connect to S3 as a drive, ExpanDrive is an amazing option. ExpanDrive is a S3 client for Mac and Windows that lets you connect to S3 as a fast network drive. It has been under active development for more than 10 years and is one of the fastest and most reliable S3 clients available. All your files in the cloud are available from within any application including Finder and Explorer.

Amazon S3 is Amazon’s API-driven, amazingly durable cloud storage service. Launched over fifteen years ago, in 2006, it was the first offering of what is now Amazon Web Services.

S3 desktop client options

Most consumer-focused cloud storage services like Dropbox or Google Drive come with their own desktop sync client. S3 differs in that it is primarily driven by an API which you need a client like ExpanDrive in order to take advantage of on your desktop. Amazon provides a fairly basic web interface, but other than that the only way to get data in and out of it is via the API.

There are a wide variety of clients to access S3, like S3 Browser or Transmit for the Mac. ExpanDrive is unique in that it translates the S3 API into an infinite-capacity external drive for macOS or PC. In practice this means Finder and Explorer now have S3 built in, as does every other app on your machine. ExpanDrive also operates as a great general S3 Browser for Mac and Windows.

Bucket level organization

S3 is organized into buckets, which are top-level folders that are uniquely named throughout the service. You can attach various policies to a bucket such as restricting access to particular users or making hosted content available to the public. ExpanDrive lets you mount the root of your S3 account, showing you all your buckets (if your user has permission to list buckets). You can restrict mount a specific bucket, or even a particular folder in a bucket, by typing the bucket name in the remote path section. For additional details you can check out our documentation on connecting to S3

S3FS for Mac and Windows

Tools like S3FS for linux perform a similar function but lack critical features like background writes, smart synchronization of files for offline access and multi-threaded reads and writes. With ExpanDrive you get a host of extra features and robust performance. Users can access petabytes of data from their laptop as if it was local. ExpanDrive works as a free S3 Client for macOS and Windows that connects you to Amazon S3 as a fast network drive.

Creating a virtual drive with Amazon S3

Amazon provides a simple guide to get started with their S3 service. You’ll need an AWS account, as well as a bucket. From there, you’ll want to get your API keys to authenticate with ExpanDrive. Haystack Software has a nice guide on how to get the keys. As with any AWS keys, it is recommended to use IAM keys rather than your root keys.

Add your Access key and Secret Key, then click Save or Connect and you’re good to go. Amazon S3 will now be visible as a network drive whenever you login to your computer – letting you access all of S3 from Finder, Explorer, Photoshop, Microsoft Office – whatever!

Drag and drop files to copy them out to the cloud. Or stream movies and media directly from S3 without needing to first download or sync them. For more information, check our documentation page on connecting ExpanDrive to S3.

System Requirements

ExpanDrive supports macOS 10.10 or newer and a wide variety of Linux distributions including Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Centos, Fedora, Redhat, and more. Learn more about how to install ExpanDrive for Linux here.

ExpanDrive runs on Microsoft Windows 7 through Windows 10. Windows Server is also supported as well as RDP/Terminal services environments. ExpanDrive can isolate multiple users logged into the same machine so they each have their own view of cloud storage.

OneDrive and Sharepoint on Linux in 2021

It’s 2021 (finally). OneDrive, Sharepoint and Linux on the Desktop are more popular than ever. Despite that, Microsoft provides no first-party client to connect to their cloud storage on Linux. They probably never will. And that’s okay.

Thankfully there are options. They fall into two main categories

  • Sync-style apps, where the all of your remote contents are first synced down and cached locally in a hot folder on your machine and uploaded when changes are made
  • Drive-based apps, where the remote storage shows up like an external or network drive and the content is accessed on demand.

Sync-style options

There are a few quality open-source options that provide a sync style client, such as abraunegg’s command-line OneDrive client. This option can be pretty intimidating, depending on your level of comfort. You’re going to need to drop into the command-line and config files to get a consistent setup and read through some dense docs on the various options available.

Certainly not a bad option, and probably the go-to open-source option out there. But not for everyone. It also is a sync client, which means you’re going to be syncing down a lot of extra data you might not need.

While sync is nice, in that it merely looks like a local folder, if you have lots and lots of data or data you rarely use it can be a lot of wasted space.

Connecting as a network drive is the natural solution to this. You can access your entire library of remote files, edit them, upload and manage them – but you don’t need to spend time or free space by first pre-downloading them.

Mounted drive options

ExpanDrive is is a powerful OneDrive for Linux client that supports Ubuntu, Linux Mint, CentOS, Fedora, Redhat and most popular distributions. It supports two-way sync via a mounted drive to OneDrive, OneDrive for Business and Sharepoint by securely connecting to the Microsoft Graph API.

Unlike other clients, ExpanDrive doesn’t pre-sync your data to a hot folder taking up time, disk space, and bandwidth downloading data you don’ need. It accesses OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, and Sharepoint on-demand by only downloading the data you or your app asks for.

ExpanDrive runs on Ubuntu, Red Hat, Linux Mint, CentOS, Debian and most other popular distributions. We provide Deb and RPM based installers and have an integrated auto-updater to help you stay up to date. ExpanDrive connects to OneDrive, Sharepoint and OneDrive for Business as a fast network drive.
