Windows 10 fake updating

Everyday my laptop tells me I need to update Windows 10, and I’ve done it 3 times now. It takes a long time, it restarts multiple times, eventually it finishes. The next time I turn my laptop on it tells me I need to update Windows 10. It’s really annoying.

This same problem actually happened with another laptop we had a few years ago that ran Windows 7. We didn’t think too much of it because that laptop had a lot of other problems too, but this is a nice laptop with Windows 10 and it doesn’t have any problems other than this.

Hey Kevin. I’m Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

1) There is a new guided walk-through from Microsoft for repairing Windows Update that leads up to resetting components if necessary: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10164/. . Try running that first.

2) If that fails try manually resetting Windows Update Service:

Open administrative Command Prompt and type following commands one-by-one followed by Enter key.

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

Close Command Prompt and see if Windows Updates works then

3) You can also install the Updates manually that fail to install which are logged at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Installed Update History, and then search for those to download and install from this Catalog: http://test.catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/sit.

4) If they continue to fail and interfere, then you can block them using one of these methods: https://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent.

While they are away from their PC simply navigate to this website (updatefaker.com) and click on one of the appropriate themes below. Once they arrive back at their personal computer they will almost certainly start to freak out.
You decide how long you want to let them suffer in frustration before telling them it’s just a prank website.

The idea behind updatefaker.com originates almost a decade ago in an obscure Steam group chat. «Wouldn’t it be funny if you could fake system updates?» That’s basically all it took for this idea to take off. This website is literally one of the least bad things that can happen to an unattended PC.

При попытке просмотра видео троянец отображает окно с предложением загрузить обновление для Adobe Flash Player, якобы необходимого для просмотра:

Перейдя по ссылке, можно ознакомиться с «условиями», в которых описана работа загружаемой троянцем программы. В числе прочего, там написано, что для удаления загружаемой программы необходимо отправить 2 платных SMS:

В рунете набирает популярность сервис FakeUpdate.net, позволяющий разыграть пользователя компьютера. Сайт имитирует оформление операционной системы, находящейся в процессе обновления.

Чтобы разыграть владельца компьютера, достаточно открыть сайт и выбрать нужный экран оформления в зависимости от типа операционной системы. Перевести браузер в полноэкранный режим обычно можно с помощью клавиши F11 на Windows или Cmd+Ctrl+F на Mac.

Если владелец компьютера устанет ждать окончания процесса установки обновлений, при нажатии на клавиши Backspace или Enter появляется экран с критическими ошибками в работе системы.

На сайте присутствуют варианты оформления экрана под все популярные операционные системы: Windows, OS X и Ubuntu Linux. Также есть возможность выбрать язык оформления на английском, русском, испанском и турецком.

Автор сервиса — программист из Лондона под ником fediaFedia. На его сайте можно найти множество других интересных веб-сервисов, в том числе сервис GeekTyper.com, позволяющий любому человеку почувствовать себя крутым хакером.

Принцип работы аналогичен сайту FakeUpdate. Нужно выбрать оформление экрана, нажать клавишу F11 и начать печатать текст. При нажатии клавиш на экране будет автоматически появляться код программы, а на рабочем столе присутствует иконки запуска различных хакерских программ.
