How To Install Firefox ESR In Ubuntu Or Linux Mint (PPA Or Snap)

Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release) is an official version of Firefox that doesn’t come with the latest features, but instead focuses on security and stability fixes. These ESR Firefox builds are intended for organizations like universities, governments, businesses, and others who need mass support deployment.

Firefox ESR releases are maintained for more than one year, and only receive point (minor) releases containing security updates, coinciding with regular Firefox releases.

These Firefox builds are not only targeted at organizations, but also at individuals who prefer stability over new features, or who prefer a UI that doesn’t change between releases and extensions that don’t break upon upgrading Firefox.

The latest Firefox ESR version is currently 60.3.0, released on October 23, while the latest regular Firefox release is 63.0.3. Since Firefox ESR is focused on security and stability, rather than new features, the next major version (68.0) will be released in September, 2019.

While Firefox ESR is not available in the Ubuntu and Linux Mint repositories, it’s easy to install it in both, either by using the Snap Store or by using the Mozilla Team Firefox ESR and Thunderbird stable builds PPA.

Install Firefox ESR In Ubuntu or Linux Mint (PPA or Snap)

Using either the PPA or the Snap package to install Firefox ESR, your current Firefox installation will not be overwritten, so you can continue to use both the latest Firefox release, as well as Firefox ESR. Also note that using either the PPA or Snap package, a new Firefox profile will be used.

You will get multiple Firefox entries in your application menu though, because Firefox ESR does not use a different name or icon in the menu. It’s best to either remove the latest Firefox build from your system (you can remove it using: sudo apt remove firefox ) if you plan on using ESR, or create a custom menu entry for Firefox ESR so you can easily differentiate between it and the default Firefox builds.

There’s also an unofficial PPA that contains the previous Firefox ESR version 52.9, in which legacy extensions (non-WebExtension API add-ons) still work, but this Firefox version is no longer supported, so it won’t receive security updates. I’m not including instructions in this article for using this unofficial PPA due to the security risks related to using an outdated Firefox version.

Install Firefox ESR in Ubuntu or Linux Mint using a PPA

One way of easily installing Firefox ESR (version 60 when this article is posted) in Ubuntu or Linux Mint is by using the Mozilla Team Firefox ESR and Thunderbird stable builds PPA. You can add it and install Firefox ESR using the commands that follow:

A couple of notes about using the Firefox ESR snap package:

• Using Firefox ESR Snap, the application will not use your system Gtk+ and cursor theme. If you want it to integrate properly with your system, use the PPA package instead of Snap.
• On Linux Mint I had to logout and login to get the newly installed Firefox ESR Snap to show up in the applications menu.
• The first time you run an application installed as a Snap, it may take a while until it starts — this should only happen the first time you run it.

You can install Firefox ESR Snap package on any Linux distribution that supports snaps. To enable Snap on Linux Mint, install snapd :

After installing this package, log out and in again to complete the installation.

Ubuntu already has Snap enabled by default.

Now you can install Firefox ESR as a Snap, by using this command:

You can also use Gnome Software app to install Firefox ESR as Snap: search for Firefox, find the Snap package, scroll down and change the Channel from stable to ESR/stable, then install the application.

Personally, I prefer using Nanotube’s Ubuntuzilla repository in order to install (recent) genuine Mozilla Firefox ESR versions on Linux Mint.
What Nanotube does is actually this:
He picks the genuine Mozilla .tar.bz2 installation packages and converts them into the .deb package format, which permits installing them and keeping them up-to-date through the Ubuntu / Linux Mint software management software just like any other applications.

Nanotube must have been running his Ubuntuzilla repository for the past 10 years at minimum. Nonetheless, in the end, it is up to you to decide whether you trust Nanotube’s Ubuntuzilla repository and install Mozilla Firefox (ESR) from there.

I «install» firefox ESR from
https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/
and it’s «just a folder with a bunch of files.»

It’s not difficult
— extract the files somewhere. under your $HOME would work, or under /opt might be typical, or whatever.
— either make a link to the extracted executable or make a script like this:

(NOTE: ‘apulse’ is there to replace pulseaudio, which I removed. Leave out the ‘apulse’ if you have pulseaudio)

Edit2: you also don’t need -P profile.default -new-instance ; you could have the ‘script’ like:

in which case you might was well just make a link, as below.

Or, rather than that one-line script (and not using apulse), you could

/bin directory by default. If you just created it, log out/back in to get it in your $PATH.
Or you could put that link somewhere else, like /usr/bin/firefox — link to —> where you extracted it.

I ‘installed’ it on my DATA partition because more than one linux installation uses it; otherwise I’d have put it under /opt/firefox

I un-installed (completely/purge) the regular firefox; if you want to keep it, you’ll have to keep track of their order in your $PATH or call the new one something different like

/bin/firefoxesr rather than

Oh. Karlchen’s «Nanotube’s Ubuntuzilla» should work for you then.

But! I made it sound complicated.

Let’s say you download the archive to

/Downloads , and double click it in your file browser -> opens archive manager -> just hit extract and all files are extracted into

The firefox executable (program to run) is

/Downloads/firefox/firefox . You can run it now by typing that.

Then type this to make a link in your $PATH, so the system knows where it is:

Log out, back in. Now you’re done; type firefox in a terminal.

(squiggle) = $HOME = /home/username, so

$PATH is a set of directories where the system looks for programs to run; type

The installation instruction which I had pointed you to, Installation, is the installation instruction for Ubuntu and Linux Mint.
(Linux Mint 18.x + 19.x are based on Ubuntu).
The line deb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt all main is not a command. Instead it is a line, which Nanotube wants you to add to the sources list file /etc/apt/sources.list.
And 2 lines below that line Nanotube gives you the complete terminal commandline, which you can execute in order to add the Ubuntuzilla repository to sources.list.

After the first step of adding Ubuntuzilla to your software sources has succeeded, the next step is adding the repository signing key to your keylist by executing the terminal command

Once this has succeeded you will find «Firefox ESR» in the Mint application menu «Internet». You click on it and Firefox ESR should start up.

From now on whenever Mozilla publishes an updated Firefo ESR version, a few days later, Update Manager should offer you the updated Firefox ESR version for installation, just like any other software update.

Thanks for this topic, it helped me out.

Meanwhile, anyone knows how to get the language pack for Firefox-ESR? It’s not a deal breaker for me but I’d like to have the Portuguese (pt-pt, not pt-br) localization. With this repo I cannot see the localization files on Synaptic, so I assume this repo only has the Firefox-ESR file, and not the localization ones.

Doing it in an automatic way would be nice, but getting the file in a manual way would also work, the ESR version is not updated that often.

Sometimes it pays to read Nanotube’s installation instruction, because it holds a secton on Localizations. This is where you will find how to teach your English speaking Firefox to speak Portuguese perfectly. At least the same worked here for German.

@t42, thanks for your reply and kind help. I’ll see, with time, if I’ll prefer downloading the pt-pt version from the link you gave me or keep things as they are now (downloading it from the repo).

I’m on the process of migrating from LMDE2, so things can have changed a lot since then and new things can escape me.
I’ve just noticed one thing in 2 separate computers running Mint 19.3 (so I’ve just replicated this):
Since I’m bandwidth constrained, I update one online computer, copy the .deb files to a USB stick and then use them on the other computers running the same OS.
I’ve updated the software (including Firefox-ESR) via a dist-upgrade and all went fine, but going through the /var/cache/apt/archives (or elsewhere) I just can’t fine the .deb file for Firefox-ESR.

Shouldn’t it be in the /var/cache/apt/archives like everything else, or, because it’s on a PPA, the file is not physically stored and deleted after installation?
