Популярные десктопные браузеры вроде Chrome или Firefox не смогут попасть в магазин Windows Store – Microsoft намерена пускать туда только такие браузеры, которые используют те же движки, что и Microsoft Edge. Правила магазина не разрешают сторонним разработчикам разместить там свой браузер, если он не работает на тех же движках HTML и JavaScript, которые применяются в Edge.

Чтобы создать версию своего десктопного браузера для Windows Store, разработчики должны воспользоваться Microsoft Desktop Bridge. Desktop Bridge, известный также как Project Centennial – это набор инструментов, который позволяет конвертировать приложение в формат, пригодный для размещения в Windows Store. Как отмечает ресурс ZDNet, на стадии конвертации браузеров у их создателей проблем не возникает, однако при попытке разместить их в магазине разработчики получают отказ.

В официальном заявлении Microsoft оправдывает свои действия заботой о безопасности пользователей Windows 10 S, залогом которой является сертификация контента в Windows Store. Если же пользователь желает работать в браузере из другого магазина, компания рекомендует ему перейти с Windows 10 S на Windows 10 Pro.

Разработчикам, которые получают отказ, компания поясняет, что считает безопасными только подлинные приложения универсальной платформы Windows (UWP), которые работают в изолированном окружении и не имеют доступа к системе в целом. Конвертированные же приложения, во-первых, имеют виртуализированные компоненты, а во-вторых, обладают способностью выходить за рамки изолированной среды и выполнять потенциально опасные действия.

Что такое Windows 10 S

Windows 10 S – это новая ОС от компании Microsoft, представленная в начале мая 2017 г. Система рассчитана в первую очередь на нужды образования. Предполагается, что она составит конкуренцию Chrome OS компании Google, которая устанавливается на хромбуки. Windows 10 S оптимизирована для работы на недорогих устройствах с невысокой производительностью. Система будет предустанавливаться на ноутбуки Microsoft Surface Laptop.

Одна из главных особенностей Windows 10 S заключается в том, что пользователь не может просто скачать в интернете нужное ему приложение и установить его на своё устройство. Все приложения приходится загружать из магазина Windows Store, который компания открыла в 2012 г., одновременно с запуском Windows 8. Ассортимент магазина велик, но в нем не хватает многих привычных пользователю программ – в частности, популярных браузеров.

Что касается других приложений, не браузеров, то Windows 10 S уже может работать с Evernote и Slack, которые были конвертированы для Windows Store. К тому времени, когда начнется отгрузка первых ПК с новой ОС, она будет совместима также с конвертированными версиями Office 2016 и Spotify.

В качестве браузера по умолчанию в Windows 10 S используется Microsoft Edge. Поисковой системой по умолчанию является Microsoft Bing. Другими поисковиками можно пользоваться, зайдя непосредственно на их страницы в интернете, но запросы из адресной строки обрабатывает только Bing.

Windows 10 warns me to use a «Microsoft-verified» app

In certain versions of Windows 10, you may receive a notification when you run the Firefox installer with a warning about Microsoft-verified apps.

This message is displayed because Firefox is not in the Microsoft store. Any copy of Firefox downloaded from www.mozilla.org is safe to install, so choose «Install anyway«.

If you do not see the option to “Install anyway”, follow the steps below to change your system settings.

1. Open the Windows 10 start menu and select Settings.

Click on Apps in the settings menu.

Under the Choose where to get apps section, click on the dropdown menu and select one of the options that allows you to install from Anywhere.

How to download and install Firefox on Windows

Before installing Firefox, see the Firefox System Requirements to make sure that your computer has the required operating system and recommended hardware.

Do not install Firefox using a limited Windows XP account. For more information, see Microsoft’s support article How to determine your user account type in Windows.

1. Visit this Firefox download page in any browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge.
2. Click the Download Now button. The Firefox Installer that downloads will automatically offer you the best available version of Firefox for your computer.
   • If you use Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer, a notification bar will appear at the bottom of the page with an option to open or run the Firefox Installer file.

   

   • Click Open file on Microsoft Edge or Run on Internet Explorer, to start the process.
   • In other browsers, you may need to first save the Firefox installer to your computer, then open the file you downloaded.
     Note: If you see an Open File — Security Warning dialog, click Open or Run .

   

3. The User Account Control dialog may open, to ask you to allow the Firefox Installer to make changes to your computer. If this dialog appears, click Yes to start the installation.
4. Wait for Firefox to finish installing.
5. When the installation is complete, Firefox will open.

Double-click the Firefox icon that was placed on the desktop whenever you want to go online.

Block Firefox Chrome from opening Windows Store automatically

If you work on a Windows 10 system you may have noticed that Windows Store may get opened automatically whenever you open a Windows application link in a web browser on the system.

Take this link for example which leads to the store page of the game Monster Go. If you click on it in a browser on Windows 10, the games’ page on the Microsoft Store websites gets opened, and so does the Windows Store application and the game’s page there.

While this can be useful at times, when you want to install the app or game on the Windows 10 machine for instance, it can be quite annoying at other times, for instance if you want to check out a series of apps or games but have no intention on installing them.

Block Firefox Chrome from opening Windows Store automatically

There does not seem to be an option in Windows, either in the Group Policy Editor or Windows Registry, to prevent the opening of the Windows Store when you are clicking on store links in a web browser on the system.

What you can do however is block browsers from opening the store application automatically. I could not find an option in Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer to do so, but all Firefox-based and all Chromium-based browsers have such an option.

Blocking Windows Store in Firefox

Firefox opens the Windows Store application automatically on top of the Store page on the Microsoft website when Store links are clicked on in the browser.

To change the behavior, do the following:

1. Type about:config in the browser’s address bar and hit enter.
2. Confirm that you will be careful if a warning appears.
3. Search for network.protocol-handler.external.ms-windows-store. This preference determines whether the Store application is opened when you click on Windows Store links.
4. Double-click on it to set it to false. This prevents Store links from opening the Windows Store application.
5. To reset the preference, simply double-click again so that its value is set to true.

Blocking Windows Store in Chromium-based browsers

The following method should work for all Chromium-based browsers including Google Chrome, Opera or Vivaldi. Google, quite unfortunately, has not integrated an option directly in Chromium to block the automatic opening of Windows Store when you click on a link pointing to a Store page on Microsoft’s website.

The only option right now, it appears to be, is to change a local file. Considering that this file may be updated regularly with Chrome updates, it is fair to say that the method is far from ideal as you may have to repeat the process whenever that happens.

To complicate matters further, you need to find the user directory of the Chrome profile you want to make the changes for.

You may need to adjust the paths depending on the version of the browser, e.g. for Chrome it matters if you run Chrome Stable or Canary. You can find out about the location of the profile folder by using the «about» command, e.g. chrome://about, vivaldo://about or opera://about.

Google Chrome:

• Windows Vista and newer: C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\

Vivaldi:

• Windows Vista or newer: C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\

Opera:

• Windows Vista or newer: C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\User Data\

In the user data folder, you will find a file named Local State.I suggest you copy it to another location first for safe keeping, as you may need a way to restore it should things go wrong. Also, close the browser before you proceed.

Open it in a plain text editor. On Windows, you right-click on the file and select Open With from the context menu. Pick Notepad, or any other plain text editor such as Notepad++ to open the file.

Use the built-in search, in Notepad hit F3, to find the ms-windows-store variable. Now, be very careful as you need to edit the Boolean value of the parameter to true.

Basically, what you do is replace the false value with true, and save the file afterwards so that it should read «ms-windows-store»:true instead of «ms-windows-store»:false.

Save the file afterwards and open Chrome to test the change. The browser should not open Windows Store automatically anymore when you click on links that point to Microsoft’s Store website.

Caveat

Once set up, you cannot open the Windows Store application anymore from the browsers. You may use another browser for that, for instance Microsoft Edge, or search for the items in the store application directly instead. (via Deskmodder)
