[SOLVED] How to get tabs in titlebar in Firefox 57?

I have a relatively wimpy laptop and Chromium tends to be very slow on it. I switched to the new Firefox and it’s noticeably quicker, however its titlebar takes up a lot of screen real-estate (I have a 13″ screen).

Does anyone know how to get the tabs-in-titlebar behavior that Chrome (and Firefox on Windows/macOS) has? I found an extension, but it doesn’t work in Firefox 57:

You should try some webkit2 based minimal browser. If you are vim user, try vimb. or uzbl-browser is also a good option. Surf/lariza are even lighter, if you can do with such barebone configs.

@Docbroke: Those minimal browsers are minimal in terms of UI, but not in terms of resource consumption. Webkit isn’t much less bloated than blink. It’s just how the modern web is — big engines required to run bigger and increasingly crappy coded websites.

@KerrickStaley: Not possible with version 57. Version 59 will have it. If you can’t wait until then, use Firefox Nightly. Just note that Nightly can be rough, things may be broken. And even in Nightly, client-side decorations need to be explicitly enabled by going to about:config and setting widget.allow-client-side-decoration to true.

Isn’t that what OP is looking for, minimal UI, so that he can have more screen space for website display.

If you prefer to keep firefox, then you could run it in fullscreen mode, where toolbar and tabs are only visible when you move your mouse to the top of the screen. The titlebar and the bar/dock of your desktop are completely hidden.

I have used firefox in fullscreen mode, in past. But it hides web popups (like file-manger popup/ login popup etc., which may be important), as well as window-manager panels.

This is a one-line setup that I created for myself. I’ve been using Firefox 59 because it has the client-side decorations built in. You can use it with 57, but I noticed some positional errors and an issue with tabs not showing up the last time so you’d have to play with it a bit to get it just right.

I’m trying firefox 59 right now, It mostly works with CSD, but one thing i’m not able to do is to drag the window when using a theme different from the default one, even the builtin dark/light themes do not allow me to drag it.

How do i use this css for my Firefox?

/edit: Ok, I installed nightly from aur and there is an option where you can disable the title bar.
Is there a XFWM-Theme that resembles Firefox’ own window buttons?

/edit2: Oh well, the close button can’t be clicked in the uppermost right corner, that sucks.

Firefox: Get Tabs In The Title Bar On Linux (Like Chrome)

If you like how Chrome displays the window controls (close, minimize and maximize buttons) next to the tabs and want this in Firefox under Linux, you’ll be glad to know it’s quite easy to achieve.

Before we proceed, here are a couple of screenshots using Ambiance and Orta Stylish themes (these are styles for the buttons only):

How it works

Get the window controls next to the Firefox menu and remove the Firefox titlebar

1. For this you’ll need Stylish and Hide Caption Titlebar Plus Firefox extensions. Install them, restart Firefox and proceed to step 2.

• Show Firefox’s titlebar: Disabled
• Uncheck «New Firefox option: Place Tabs in the Titlebar
• Skin for minimize, max & close buttons: «Auto. Current theme’s skin«
• Minimize, Max & Close Buttons located at top-right corner: Disabled
• Uncheck Floating buttons appears when hovering micro-button or main menu is activated

Here’s a screenshot with the exact settings:

On the «Look & Feel 2» tab (yes, another Look & Feel tab):

• Uncheck: Enable custom Firefox Application «Home» button

Here’s a screenshot for this too:

4. Now you should see some buttons next to your Firefox menu but they look ugly. To get some nice looking Ambiance-style buttons, install HCTP Ambiance theme. There’s also an Orta HCTP theme (only enable one!).

Update: here’s another Orta style with a modified alignment which looks better (thanks to Janhouse!).

5. Install CompizConfig Settings Manager:

And go to the «Window Decorations» plugin settings and under «Decoration windows», enter:

Important: «class=Firefox» is for those using Firefox stable. If you’re using Minefield for instance, replace «Firefox» with «Minefield».

Apply this for unmaximized Firefox windows too

— for Ambiance, remove the following code (you should find it somewhere near the end of the file):

Then click save.

— for Orta there are 2 steps:

1) search for «#main-window[sizemode=»maximized»] #TabsToolbar<» (it should be somewhere near the top of the file) and remove «#main-window[sizemode=»maximized»]» so that the line looks like this:

2) then, just like for Ambiance, remove the following code (you should find it somewhere near the end of the file):

Ура-Ура-Ура! Firefox наконец-то позволяет убрать title bar

Огнелис становится всё быстрее и стильнее. Теперь в оформлении можно убрать пустую полосу заголовка, так называемый title bar и сделать компактный вид, как в Chrome: Меню (три горизонтальные черты в верхнем правом углу) — Персонализация. Левый нижний угол убираем галочку «заголовок». Нажимаем «Готово» и радуемся долгожданной фичи 🙂 Актуально с версии 60.

Долгожданной фичи, лол. Боюсь представить сколько шуму будет, когда Windows узнает о возможностях сэкономить title bar вообще во всех приложениях.

Не, это какое-то жалкое подобие. Не учитывает форму углов, не учитывает высоту заголовка, не знает о том, что кнопки могут быть не только справа. Вот в хромом с этим лучше, кроме стремной обводки окна.

А, ну так я знаю. Это неудобно, т.к. исчезают (или еле видны) кнопки закрытия или скрытия окна.

1. С mate-maximus нет заголовка ни у одного максимизированного окна, любой программы. Не надо ждать, пока хозяин твоего зонда разрешит тебе пользоваться зондом без заголовка, добавив в зонд такую фичу.
2. marco (WM в MATE) крив и рисует рамки вокруг всех (немаксимизированных) окон, даже у Хромого и Файерфокс со снятой галкой.

Возможность скрыть нафиг не нужный и часто дублированный titlebar в почти любом линуксовом WM была сколько себя помню. Аналогично всегда было глобальное меню в Mac OS X.

Лет сколько, шесть? назад глобальное меню попало в Ubuntu Unity и стало чуть ли не мэйнстримом. Затем разрабы Unity пошли еще дальше, и запилили LIM — Locally Integrated Menus.

На сегодняшний день глобальное меню/недоLIM встроено в KDE в любом дистре, Athor пилит https://github.com/rilian-la-te/vala-panel-appmenu для XFCE/MATE/Budgie/. а Windows, как всегда, отстает по фичам рабочего стола на пару десятилетий.

Там есть 2 чекбокса: разворачивать по-умолчанию на весь экран и убирать заголовок у развёрнутых окон.

Снимаешь первую галку и ничего не разворачивается.

Hey. I’m new to Linux, but I’m starting to make my way around and looks like I might stick to it.

One thing that bothers me and I find silly is how you loose plenty of Firefox space because title bar.

Can I have tabs move up in the title bar or somehow remove titlebar when the window is maximized but move the minimze, maximize and close buttons inline with the tabs?
Two reasons why this bothers me:

1. You loose pixels
2. More importantly, you have to aim for the tab now with the mouse since tab is not at the edge of the screen.

Can this be done in infinitely customizable linux world?

1. FF is not Linux. It is a product of the Mozilla Foundation. However, it is FOSS.
2. Both Linux and FOSS are only «infinitely customizable» if you are prepared to rewrite source code and compile your very own, very special, very private version/app. Otherwise, it is not realistic to expect infinite customizability in anything.
3. The keyboard shortcut for easily rotating between tabs is: +
4. Min/Max/Close (among other options) can always be invoked, in any window, with +
5. If you want to free up as much screen real estate as possible, instead of maximizing, go into full screen mode with .

Combining 3, 4 & 5 above gives you all kinds control without ever having to touch the mouse.
