How do I force Windows Update to start downloading?

I usually do not have unlimited internet at home, but at the college I get unlimited bandwidth, hence I want to know. It is stuck at 0% even when connected (I do have updates pending, it is just that my home network is marked as a Metered Connection, and hence it does not start at home.) Any ideas?

Method 1: Run the Update Troubleshooter on the computer.

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with Update. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your Windows update.

Refer these steps:

1. Press Windows key + X, select Control panel.
2. Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons.
3. Click on Troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel.
4. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
5. Restart the system and check if the issue is resolved.

If Method 1 doesn’t help, try Method 2.

How to force update Windows 10

When Microsoft rolls out Windows 10 feature updates, they do it in phases. It means that they are not available to everyone right away. While it is possible to force update Windows 10, you should understand a few things. The rollout depends on many criteria depending on how many devices were successfully tested, driver compatibility confirmation from OEM, and hardware requirement.

There are two possibilities. One that your computer is eligible, and there is only a delay of one or two days or maybe a few hours. Secondly, there is an issue. However, since you have made up your mind to update now, let’s find out how to force update.

How to force update Windows 10

Before doing this, make sure you create a system restore point. If there is a problem, you can always rollback to the earlier version.

Next, clear the Software distribution folder which is available at C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download. It is best that you rename it to something else.

Now, open Command Prompt with administrator privileges. We will use wuauclt.exe. This is the Windows Update Auto Update Client and it allows you control over the functioning of the Windows Update Agent.

Type the following command and hit Enter:

This command will force Windows Update to check for updates, and start downloading.

Now when you go to Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update, you should see that Windows Update has automatically triggered checking for a new update. This will help you get through the waiting list, and the download should start anytime.

Sometimes the update is only available for computers which have not been reported for any issue. Sometimes, there are specific driver issues. When you either follow this method or keep hitting the download button manually, it can even roll out beta updates for your computer. So stay warned if you are going to force update Windows 10.

I have a lot of items running on this machine but if I leave it running for a day or two unattended Windows Update will force a reboot. How do I stop that? Is there a registry hack to do that?

I am past the point of regressing to 1511. Can I reinstall 1511 over 1607 or do I have to go back to Windows 7 to get control back?

But it works. Why would Microsoft try to suppress something that users desperately need and that actually works? Instead of censoring it why doesn’t Microsoft provide an equivalent solution?

I have seen moderators post links to external sites with a disclaimer. If this is not approved please provide a link to a Microsoft statement that says so and tells why.

I am a developer that runs VMs on a Surface Pro 4 1TB for development and testing. If I can’t stop the host (Windows Pro 10 x64 1607) from rebooting while the VMs are running I will be forced to switch to Linux for the host. Is that what Microsoft wants? Is the intention to push all ISVs and small businesses to Linux? If not what is the official Microsoft fix for controlling reboots forced by Windows Update?

I’m shaking out of frustration!! Why is this happening I don’t know, but this time Windows made me angry, seriously. I set Windows to notify me before running any updates. After that, I left my computer on all night to render my video project. Can you imagine how frustrated I was after founding Windows system updated and the system upgraded by force. My whole work went for nothing! Please tell me how to stop those automatic updates because the next time this will happen I’m about throwing my laptop out of the window.

More and more people every day are complaining about automatic Windows 10 updates. We are quite sure that each Windows user has experienced forced restarts at least once. Windows system continuously checks for updates and notify the user about pending ones. The notification is displayed in a pop-up window that occurs at the bottom right corner of the screen. Usually, the user can select to delay the update by selecting the time of the pop-up window to show up again (10min, 15min, 30min, 1h, 4h, etc.). Unfortunately, if you tend to leave your PC overnight, you may miss the pop-up, which is why Windows reboots automatically. Although system restarts have a good reason, which is a proper security updates, Windows really cross the borders as those restarts are initiated by force without user’s approval. That’s a big deal because there are lots of people who have experienced file loss. That’s why we want to prevent this from happening again by presenting you two methods that will help to stop Windows from restarting your PC after updates.

How to disable force restarts after Windows updates?

Method 1

Specialists refer to the disabling forced restart as a quick registry hack. This method works on all Windows versions, including 7, 8, 8.1, 10, XP, and even Vista. What this hack does? It disables forced restart, what means that the required update will be run, but the system will not reboot. You will have to do that by yourself once you save all the files that you were currently working on. To disable force restarts, you have to do the following:

1. Click Win key + R, type regedit to the run dialog, and hit Enter.
2. When Registry Editor window opens, go to the following location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU.
3. In fact, the part WindowsUpdate\AU has to be created manually. For this purpose, click Win key, go to New, and select Key.
4. Type WindowsUpdate and hit Enter.
5. After that, right-click on the WindowsUpdate key, navigate your mouse on New, and select Key.
6. Type AU in the opened window and press Enter.
7. Then, select AU Key from the left pane, right-click on the right-pane, navigate to New, and select DWORD (32-bit).
8. Type NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers in the opened window and hit Enter afterwards.
9. Double-click on the newly created value and type 1 into the data box.
10. After that, click OK and reboot your PC.
