Forza horizon 4 linux proton

KDE Neon 5.22

Как запустить Forza Horizon 4 на linux через Steam+Proton?

WINEPREFIX=»/home/ /.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/ /pfx» winecfg
И выберите эмуляцию рабочего стола с нужным разрешением. (в таком случае лучше иметь кнопку под сворачивание окна, а не просто alt+tab)

Now you can tell your friends to join our magnificient journey and leave Windows for good! Do you want to play Forza Horizon 4 on Linux? Read on!

For this game you’ll need only VKD3D v.2.3 or newer, Proton, Mesga-Git video driber and Wine component installation. You can instal VKD3D just as you’ve always installed DXVK. If you don’t know how, check our tutorial here.

In order to start the game, it’s required to use latest Proton Experimental build. The Valve team will upstream the needed patches shortly but for now you are going to use this build.

One final step is to install Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2017. It’s easy as:

winetricks -q vcrun2017

If you are using the Steam version you can skip this step.

Of course you can always use Winetrisk’s GUI bit it’s a lot faster from the terminal.

Please be adviced the game is running only on AMD GPU’s at the moment. We’ll wait for NVIDIA to step in with a fix. For now the game crashes during the first race.

UPDATE.

In order to play with NVIDIA card, create a file dxvk.conf with the following content:

and put it in the game’s root directory.

And that’s it! Now you can play Forza Horizon 4 on Linux and with perfect performance.

  • Wine version used in the video: Proton Experimental (22.04.21)
  • VKD3D version: 2.3

Forza horizon 4 linux proton

Sadly despite using Linux for 99% of my gaming, I don’t plan on buying the Steam version of Forza Horizon 4, since I already own the UWP version AND I just got an Xbox Series S for playing games that are naturally incompatible with Linux e.g. anticheat-ridden games.

I’d appreciate knowing how it plays though, mostly because atm there’s no info about how it runs on Linux, and I’m certain if it plays well other Linux gamers may very well buy the game.

It can run steam games but it might not run Forza 4 because of the high requirements.

Proton-GE sucks anyway Lutris has faster performance

Linux cannot run UWP or WPF, literally modern C# applications. even using proofing like Wine and Proton.

Isn’t the Steam version using W32 as Steam doesn’t/can’t support UWP games on their platform? If it is indeed still using UWP, that would make FH4 the first game ever released on Steam to use UWP. Also what is WPF? Never heard of that before. If you’re talking about Xbox sign-ins, you do know that Proton fixed that months ago, allowing anyone to play games like Sea of Thieves or Halo MCC on Steam using Linux (with anticheat disabled in the case of Halo MCC)? C# works with Proton too, as well as mono, sometimes not as well as anyone would like, but certainly not 100% incompatible.

It can run steam games but it might not run Forza 4 because of the high requirements.

Proton-GE sucks anyway Lutris has faster performance

It’s less a matter of requirements and more a matter of «does it work without gamebreaking glitches at all». Systems get more powerful over time, meaning what’s unplayably slow today may very well run at full speed in the future, especially with a combo of better hardware and more optimized Proton coding.

Also, how is Lutris better than Proton-GE and/or Proton? It’s the same thing, except using a supposedly noob-friendly GUI to install things. Ironically games run through Steam work better out of the box than I’ve ever seen Lutris work, though, so «noob-friendly» is a bad phrase to describe Lutris, especially since I’ve had nothing but problems with Lutris vs just installing nonsteam games through wine using Q4Wine manually and using Proton on Steam.

Proton Experimental gets upgraded, Forza Horizon 4 playable and Origin Overlay works

Valve and their partners CodeWeavers have upgraded Proton Experimental, the special testing version of Proton where the latest special updates come in with some big stuff.

This is a totally separate version to the normal Proton releases, which you can select for specific games just like you would normally. Right click -> Properties -> Compatibility and select Proton Experimental from the drop-down box.

With the April 22 update to Proton Experimental, here’s what’s been added:

  • Updated VKD3D-Proton to version 2.3
  • Forza Horizon 4 is playable (requires AMD GPU with latest mesa-git drivers (known good mesa-git commit: `899dd8e60a5228c4506400d621ef6b5abfe5e32c`)).
  • Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is playable.
  • The Origin Overlay is functional, which allows It Takes Two to be played with friends.
  • Better support Anno 1404 — History Edition.

Update: another small update was added to Proton Experimental hours after this article to include:

  • Fix Red Dead Redemption 2 «Not Purchased» error.
  • Fix Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition hang on startup.

See the full changelog for all the details.

Testing it out myself this morning with Titanfall 2, it definitely seems like the Origin Overlay does now work. Although it seems to dislike the MangoHud overlay and would not work if that was running with the game. There are a few quirks to it in my testing for example: for me opening the Friends List will minimize the game, then when you bring it back the Friends List is there — slightly odd but it works well enough to use.
